Ok I now have 760mb of craptop RAM installed

I am going to install Ubuntu but Cyco is it easy to dual boot? I don't want to break my craptop as my Dad will stab me

its pretty simple to dual boot


first burn a CD and stick it in, put it into live cd to see if youre hardware is compatible (you should be ok)

You can, but it's still more commonly supplied as 2 x 1Gb sticks at the moment.

Does anyone know why my Lappy won install Ubuntu?

40gb HDD (Upgrading A.S.A.P)
2.4ghz Celeron Processor
768mb RAM.

I installed with alternate CD and installed it, the orange bar filled fully and then the screen when blank and did bugegr all :S

Have now got 'ol XP back (:

It's most likely a graphics driver issue with GNOME Desktop and your laptop's onboard graphics. You could try a different Linux distro like OpenSUSE or Mandriva and select KDE desktop instead of GNOME.

Other than that, it'll probably involve booting into the command line, installing drivers and mucking about with config files. Yuk!
