Yeah, you should be fine upgrading the RAM. Packard Bell let you do it without voiding the warranty and they're renowned for being arsey with customers. Amongst other things...

Sorry to keep buggig but what would you recommend more, I ant to upgrade because most of my ram gets eaten by the onboard graphics.
More RAM or a Graphics card? |

Depends how much you've already got in there?
Generally speaking, a 128Mb graphics card with 1Gig of Ram is plenty for XP. For Vista, you ALWAYS need 2Gig for it to run properly regardless of the graphics card

There is, but it's rather complicated!
Basically, it involves downloading a special Linux boot disk which includes a program that can read and reset encrypted data on NTFS file systems.
Or, in plain English, you download the .iso file, burn it as a bootable CD, pop it in the drive, boot up the computer and follow the instructions!
It's a text-based program rather like the old MSDOS stuff so it's not exactly easy to use.
I'm not even sure if it's still available online but if you want to have a go, PM me and I'll see if I can dig it out for you.
I've only ever had to use it once and it took ages to get it right
Thanks for that. What if we transfered all the files she wanted to keep on to my laptop and then cleared her pc completely. There must be a way to start from fresh without inputtng a pasword, surely? |

Yes, that would be a much easier option
You might have to play around with ownership permissions to get at her stuff before it'll let you copy it over to your laptop but it's pretty easy to do.
After that, just boot up from the windows disk and follow the instructions to do a fresh install, it won't matter if there's an admin password on there.
UNLESS...
You don't mean a BIOS password do you, i.e. you get prompted for a password before windows even starts to load? If so, you'll have to take the laptop apart and either find the CMOS reset jumper on the motherboard (if there is one) or take the CMOS battery out and leave it for a day or two.

If you start with a totally blank hard drive then it's easy, you can use the windows setup disk to partition the drive. If you already have an OS on it, then you'll have to use a third party application like partition magic or such like.

Nah, not all Norton stuff is rubbish. Norton Ghost, for example, is a must have if you're serious about backing up properly...
