Hello everyone.

Consider me a newb on S60 - although I understand a LOT can be done on them - I'm an S60 2nd Edition FP2 defector.

I have a SPECIFIC question that I HOPE you ALL can assist with; however I currently don't have an S60 phone.

Some background first. My service provider, Rogers Wireless (more in the Bocanito Canadian users thread in the last 5 posts there), has done something heiness to us GSM faithful here in Canada. Their have finally allowed for decent browsing pricing on "Subsidized" ONLY phones. Thats right SUBSIDIZED ONLY phones. This includes the K850i & the Nokia N95-4 (8GB black version). Because of branding and the network setup that they've implemented, many ppl that have purchased this data plan to allow for $7/Mth unlimited data are getting SCREWED when trying to use it on their Retail purchased phones. Many are seeing charges in excess of $400 - 800CAN causing hardache & pain - well mostly anger & utter shock!

Now originally we thought Rogers was using IMEI filtering, but this doesn't make sense (there was a software tech that connects to the GGSN via the switch that Tmobile USA did back in 2004 but it failed MISERABLY; imagine working tech and have 200 calls in the queue of ANGRY HP 6315 PPC users for over 4hrs consistently! Yea that software was pulled in a heartbeat). SO I'm left to deduce - and others on Howardforums.com - that certificates as well as browser profile (the software that tells Esato what device you're using from the built in browser; that profile thingy) is at fault.

Now, here is my question. Is there a way to backup & REINSTALL these signed certificates back onto an N95-4, and also spoof a the browser signature/profile thingy?

Thanks for all you're help everyone.

As far as I know (and I'm pretty up on these things) there is no way to spoof the browser. Doesn't sound beyond the realms of human achievement though so who knows...
Your probably right in your hunch though- my operator here in Sweden has two plans: browser only (c. 15usd) and all data (c.30usd) and they can tell if you are using the inbuilt browser or Opera Mini.

Bingo! Shug thats Exactly what my provider is doing (save for the all data = $65/mth)! Somehow they can also tell if GMail is being used and have (this current month) blocked the ports the java app uses, trying to lock users into another service add-on, for a fee of course.

THis erks me SOOOO much because smartphones and even feature phones were MEANT to be able to use applications; due to the size footprint of S60/UIQ/J2ME apps they don't send or receive that much data (J2ME especially). This is NOT laptop tethering for VPN or corporate desktop applications (laptop or not) or FTP'in for major resources. Its not abuse NOR is it something users SHOULD be restricted too. Its like having a car, yet told you cannot add a new stereo system, shocks, tires, spoilers, seats or A/C.

Thanks though for sharing the information on the Browser, MUCH appreciated. Now I'm off to hunt for a plugin for User Agent spoofing (thats the term I was after in the previous post, hehe).

Hi Prom1

Well i would also say you can rule out it being the browser info as both the phones from them and not would give the same browser info.

It sounds like what ever system they have in place is quite sophisticated and that they are determined to make sure that you can only do what they want you to. Not nice but really i don't think there is anything you can do to beat what seems like a very effective system.

Marc

Hi Prom1,

Can it be that they have done some setting in the "subsidised" phone firmware so that the DHCP always assign a specific range of IP (i.e. those that dont incur billing charges) when phone initiate a network connection?

Has anyone tried flashing a generic N95-8G with Roger's firmware if one exist? If someone has done this and it still dont work, then most probably they are using imei/mac addr as filtering and there is no way to overcome it.

Marc,

You may be right! It's looking MORE and MORE that way.

Mib, althought I can change the APN (which uses different GGSN routing & thus specific IP is used for pure 8080 port & common POP3/IMAP ports, the other for WML browsers for mobile sites disallows Email ports - this does cause more charges on my bill. However, I'm still searching if anyone upgraded the OS on their N95-4 that is Rogers subsided originally and I'll have to wait a month or so until someone that HAS done so, posts any shocks on their monthly bill.

In any case, what Mib suggests is most likely part of an intelligent, robust and GREEDY system that rogers has in place - and so far Marc is correct that it may be futile to try to circumvent it without someone on the inside able to test along with me and give me the inside info without reporting it to the engineers - don't want loop holes fixed IF they exist .

Firmware upgrade for N95 8GB on O2 is now available, upgrade to v20.0.16 includes ASR which actually works better than RotateMe.
