he's right. 3.2 MP isnt much of a jump from 2.0, so you dont exactly expect brighter, livelier, dlsr-quality pictures; just more pixels to cover.
also, i find it amusing that this person who calls him/herself k790fan went through the process of signing up for an esato username just to rant:

I have been waiting for this phone to launch for over 3 months. And I am sick of that waiting.Tommorow I will buy the K750. K800 is just a K750 with higher resolution and bugged firmware.I don't want to wait another 3 months until K800's firmware is patched. And I don't want to pay a huge amount of money on this, when I can buy the K750 with only 180$.When I will consider to upgrade my K750, my next phone will need to have a QVGA video camera at least, 5 or more megapixels, bigger screen, bigger screen resolution, no bugged firmware.
If you have a K750 and u want to buy the K800 to "upgrade"... I say it's a really bad decision...you should wait for another "K series" phone to be released.

@Mark_Q - if your calculations are correct, then I stand corrected. Maybe I was oversimplifying it because I could DEFINETLY see a patern where as a portion of the picture would be in focus (normally in the middle) while the rest of it would be blurry - and in majority of the cases, the blury portions would either be closer or further than the focused part. To me that looked like not enough DoF
Thanks for the clarifications (and I'll take your calculations for granted ) |

In lieu of the slew of recent examples of somewhat disapointing camera quality, I really need some esato expertise:
I'm mostly looking for a canera-phone replacement that I can utilize for taking social photos (at parties, nightclubs, dates etc...). Money is important but if I want to get a combo phone/camera, the photo quality has to be useable for disseminating online as well as perhaps making small prints.
With some rumors on the forum that a 5MP replacement will be comming perhaps at Q4:
Should I get a stopgap phone (cheapo brick) and wait for the 5mp?
Should I get the k790x (will I be able to take photos of people in night/noisy crowded scenes?)?
Should I abandon the idea of a camera/phone composite that is capable of providing this and instead buy a cheap phone and a decent/small digital camera?
Many many many thanks,

don't go for camera phones if you need photos with quality
they are getting closer and closer every year, but they are still behind
even a 5mp phone cam wouldn't get you the quality you are searching for |

but still, its kinda sad. T610 didnt have a real upgrade (k700 is another product line and marketing strategy), k750/w800 didnt have a real upgrade...
Last year i was really excited about but this year is just not the same |

Tervel,
I used a handy software f/Calc for those calculations. Unfortunately this and other interactive alternatives online are based on camera formats 35mm and larger. For small sensors of digicams yo have to make some circle of confusion calculations first, something I did.

Since the K790/K800 is around, it's high time the phone camera thread is bumped. I don't want to start another thread as it's been created already
Mark_Q, we'd all be grateful if you can grace the thread. i'm mostly interested on maximizing the options on the k750 group of phones (k750/w800/d750/w810/etc):

You have my respect sir! We're all hoping to learn from you.

The camera shots are kinda dissapointing.
But I need to wait for the K790a to come out first But I want to compare with the Nokia N73.
hopefully SE with future firmware can make the camera/media player better
I've been wanting this phone for a LONG time, and tne N73 has caught my eye...hopefully SE doesn't let me down *crosses fingers*

Then what is the purpose of these camera oriented phones? Am I missing something? |

the camera takes pics that are perfectly fine... the sharp 903/4 is better but honestly the people that are saying that their k750/w800/w810 are better are on crack
here is an example from the k790 i had vs a w810i
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=916004&page=23&pp=15
the cam isn't fantastic but it is better then the curent SE's out there.
and here are random pics i took with the k790

Some of you guys are expecting a lot from you mobile's camera! I didn't expect a quantam leapt in what the K800 could produce. In the end this is a camera phone ! This is not to say that these pictures aren't bad. If we look upon the principle of having a camera intergrated with our mobile is for convenience. So for those spontaneous moments in which we might want to take a picture. This means that the average user does not need to worry about whether he or she is focusing on the correct area. Two minutes on photoshop with some tinkering with the sharpness and levels gave me a very nice result.
Even if the actual sensor has physical limitations, then SE should at least have some processing after the picture is taken in the phone to make it easier to take those spontaneous shots.
EDIT: A review of the K800! http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson_k800-review-93.php

Its a gimmick - nothing more nothing less
the photos are nice if you only want to view them on the screen
they are also quite useful if you have an exitent with you car...
trust me, i'm really into photographing and filming - go for a small compact cam |

If so, this forum is a brooding ground for commodified fetishim and hedonic adaptation. Cheers |

My my! The new Cybershot isn't going down well with some members The dreaded camphone envy syndrome, seems to be rearing its big ugly butt head again, like it does everytime a new model appears
@Dragoneye, I agree with you mate
As far as the new K800 goes the 1.2mp increase wouldn't really make that much difference, like another knowledgeable member, JMCOMMS, was told at a Nokia launch,
......he then went on to explain about the pixels, and the fact that to double the quality of a camera you need to double both X and Y resolution - which means QUADRUPLING the pixels. Therefore to get a serious improvement on 2 megapixel, you jump to 8.
so the jump from 2 - 3.2 is a gimmick, giving us only a slight increase in sharpness over the K750i..
IMO however, the image stabilisation and Bestpic will generally help people take better pics. Sure, they will never by as good as your 6mp dedicated digicam but I think they are printable and good enough for most people.
Those pics Dragoneye took above looks absolutely fine to me, and are excellent for a camphone. T610 takes crap pics, so does the K300, probably only good enough for transferring between phones, but anyone who says the K800 takes rubbish pics not worth printing is nonsensical.
