because some people seem to desparately need to believe that SE is washed up. They will cling to any kind of weak evidence that SE walkman phones are a complete sham.

I love Nokia and SE and they both have good and bad points. I also love Sony products and found their Walkman mp3 players ok for sound. Some Walkman phones have been good some poor. Though i have to say the W910 was awful. The sound to me was weedy and it kept fading in and out whilst listening. Plugging in other headphones just made it muffled. Absolutely awful quality worst i ever heard. Returned it after a day. Anyway lately things are not perfect at SE but with C902 i think they are improving again. I love the menu system on SE better than Nokia though. I used to prefer Nokia UI but with later updates of their S40 its over complicated things and its messy with too many folders in Gallery. The JV of SE is not doomed.

I find the biggest problem with SE these days is inconsistant quality. My W910 simply does not have that problem. The audio quality is better than my K800 which wasn't poor by any means.
It's also close to the N95 in audio quality which is also pretty good.

Yes, but thats two steps below maximum volume that you get the best sound. Isnt it? What about maximum volume or medium volume?

It's not really that bad, though it is worse at full volume and mid-volume. But not as bad as that review seems to indicate.
From about 60-90% is a good listening range - if you are listening to anything other than headphones you never really need to go outside that range.
If you are listening via an external output for example plugged into car stereo or home hi-fi you would only set any audio device to maximum 8/10 on the volume anyway - and use the stereo itself for amplification. Most audio devices have poorer sound reproduction at their highest output.

I usually listen at 2 bars (25% volume) with K850 + HPM-85 + Manual EQ. 4 bars or 50% is already too loud.
Listening loud volumes for a long time can damage your ears.
Yeah I have to admit that the sound output has limited dynamic range and poor THD, maybe because DRC is applied.

The item that has the biggest effect on the sound you actually hear are the headphones.
I improved the output of my GF's Ipod 100% by throwing away the shite Apple supplied set and connected some senheiser's, it had exactly the same effect on my W960's sound quality. If you reverse the experiment you can make a W960 sound like a cheap plastic toy.
I have owned the ... T68i T610, P800, P900, P910, P990, W950, P1, W960 But SE have now totally lost the plot. |

My K800i has good decent sound until its on highest volume and it then distorts though i dont think listening that loud is good. Though last night i was listening to my cousins Irish band August Destiny on my K800i headphones and even Irish folk music distorted. |

I agree 100%. I use my creative ep630's, which are rebadged sennheiser cx300's. The hpm-70 headphones however are still much better than the ipod earphones I have to say.
