ignore what happens while you're entering the code. Just do it. After you've entered the last "*" you should see the service menu >*<<*<*

As I already stated in my very first post to Esato in January 21, 2002, this code, > * < < * < has worked on all and phones since the beginning of times, or at least since the first model ever released from Ericsson. It's a nice tradition from Ericsson that SonyEricson has continued, and it is no more very "hidden", since everyone knows about it. It is more like an extra protection of this menu in order not to access it accidentally. The code has become a standard for all phones, like the code *#06# has become a standard for almost all mobile phones for displaying the IMEI code.
When you press the key sequence, or move the joystick lef/right, just ignore whatever pops up or is displayed on the screen, just continue with the key sequence, > * < < * <, and the service menu *will* appear after the last '<'.
It was a bit trycky on my old K700i, where the joystick was broken.

I found that it has been difficult to use this on my K800i and R1GB firmware (use to work all the time with R1ED). Especially if you set the joystick shortcut. Try to disable (the < and > shortcut first). Also sometime you need to hit the key-sequance fast enough. Cheers.

OK, I have disabled the shortcuts on the joystick and have tried umpteen times as fast as I can but all that shows up on the screen after the input is '**' and that is all - no service menu at all.

I can access the IMEI code but not the service menu...I am with O2 - would that be the problem?

thanks

Don't have any idea, sorry. I found out that IMEI info is on 'Configuration' which is one of sub menu of 'Service Info' which is sub menu of 'Service'.

Could be because your phone is on O2 because mine is generic APAC.

OK try this, took out your batt for few mins and try again. Sometime the phone need to be properly restart once in a while.

@aremaboy, hope not because I seldom use the joystick Seriously I am getting this problem since I upgraded to R1GB.

OK, Got it - at last... I had been using >*<<*< but didnt see the final *

Doh!!!

Thanks for the help with that.

Regarding the issue I had with 'freezing' of the joy stick - I used the tip suggesting rotating clockwise/anti clockwise 15-20 times and this seems to cure that problem although it does seem to return if I download something!!!
Strange.

Cheers.

I clean the base of the joystick using a small cottonbud regularly. So far no problem with joystick at all (smooth as butter) but getting to Software menu using >*<<*<* need certain speed when I enable joystick shortcut since I upgraded to R1GB.

Are you sure you start the key sequence from the standby screen? It does not work otherwise. And it does not have to be that really fast, I can reach the service menu even if I press a button or move the joystick one time per second, or even slower. Since I have joystick-right linked to my calendar, this is what happens:

  1. From standby mode, if the screen is completely blank, press any key so that the backlight is turned on, but make sure you still are on the standby screen and the keyboard is unlocked.
  2. Move joystick to the right. The calendar view appears (since I have that function linked to joystick-right), The current date is highlighted.
  3. Press star, nothing happens
  4. Move joystick to the left, the day before today is highlighted (of course)
  5. Move joystick to the left again, the day before yesterday is highlighted.
  6. Press star, nothing happens
  7. Move joystick to the left again, the day three days before today is highlighted.
  8. Press star, and the service menu appears

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before, but here we go: In the email inbox, if you delete a message, it is not deleted, only "marked for deletion" and will be deleted the next time you run the send & receive command, thus having to re-connect to the email server. But if you go to the file manager, press more and memory status, then select phone, messages, e-mail, your operator name, inbox, you can really delete the messages directly.
