so would it be worth updating via the method outlined here or wait for ota or pc companion, would really like to have JB on my phone but don't want to update that's something that's not specific to my generic SIM free phone.

That's entirely up to you, as long as you follow the guides for using flashtool you should be ok, if you do upgrade this way then I would suggest allowing flashtool to perform a full wipe in the process, don't worry your memory card will be intact
Personally I'm going to wait this time until the update hits pcc.

I hope it does come to us soon because over at xda there saying that jellybean has started rolling out for the xperia v now.

hmmmm interesting indeed, so surely it can't be far off at all . and judging by the comments there are some big performance improvement!.

I guess Sony have surprised us all and decided to give this a quick release and roll out. Maybe they were listening to the moans and groans and that Samsung had already released JB on the 2 year old GS2. Hope it's a sign of the times. I'm loving my XT apart from my still Wi Fi tethering issue and the odd screen flickering
