Seems like it's a case of close by no cigar again for Sony.

The design is getting a big thumbs up but the screen and camera are letting the device down.

I also picked up on the Engaget review part ref design and the fact that it's not that comfortable to hold. I had a fear that might be the case.

I really want this to succeed as I have a soft spot for Sony and I think it will, from a specs point of view it's right up there; 5", 13mpx, etc.

It's just a real shame from my point of view that Sony can't nail their post processing on their cameras.

@DACHA... Even though HTC has 0.3" smaller screen, both of them look the same...!!!(137.4mm vs 139mm)
Z looks much more sleeker than HTC...

Theres nothing inherently wrong with the photos, colour is good and focus and exposure are all check.

The big thing that annoys me with the camera is the "smudging" effect the post processing does at full zoom; you lose detail.

Prior to Z Sony applied an aggressive algorithm that made a lot of noise at 100 crop but essentially was still sharp. They seem now to have gone in the other direction in order to reduce noise they smoothed everything and therefore you lose a lot of detail.

Yes, it;s not a big deal for most people as they don't fully zoom their photos or blow them up to full size and therefore this won't be an issue, but for me I just find it frustrating that the likes of Apple and Samsung use exactly the same sensor but seem to be able to get much out of it. I've no doubt that the SGS4 will use the same Sony sensor but produce better pictures purely down to software.

Sony always use to have state of the art cameraphones but they seem to have fallen behind the pack in the last few years; even the new HTC One seems to have better image quality at 100 crop imo.

Maybe it just my preference but I am quite picky

Xperia Z sells 140k units in first week in Japan

The Sony Xperia Z (SO-02E) launched in Japan through NTT DoCoMo on the 9th February. Reports are suggesting that around 140,000 units have been sold during the first week. DoCoMo representatives described the performance as a “fairly encouraging start” (translated). The handset sits atop on the smartphone league tables in Japan, as you would expect considering it has just launched. It will be interesting to see how it fares once the initial hype has died down.

So it's not the 500,000 a certain someone wanted so badly to believe.

It's a start for them, lets see how they do in the long term, these home sales have a tendency to just level off pretty quickly, then it's all down to international sales.

I prefer to read the reviews of supposedly 'biased' sites as it gives a biased fan like me a more balanced perspective on reality.

The last thing I want is to be following a brand as blindly as Apple users and their beloved iPhones. That's just not cool.

With regards to the obvious spam posting over the last week or so from the guy a few posts above me, I'd like to draw attention to the spam reporting protocol laid out by laffen. Basically don't reply to the spam and report it to laffen.

I have noticed that a few from earlier in the week have already been removed but apparently he won't give up!
