It looks to have a 1280x720 display and while everyone seems to be automatically assuming it's a tablet, I'm unsure how they're reaching this conclusion.

actually it has 1280 x 800 resolution which would imply it's a tablet. the benchmark ran with a 1280 x 752 resolution which means the device was held horizontally and the missing 48 pixels were used for the ICS nav bar at the bottom.

for comparison's sake, the lt29i hayabusa ran the same benchmark with a resolution of 1196 x 720.

Bah, I mis-typed the implied total resolution. Yeah, 1280x800 would be it.

Now while I agree it seems likely to be a tablet given the resolution, isn't it possible it could be a phone with a slightly different form factor?

Heh, I guess I'm hoping that Sony would give a real advancement in the display of a future tablet. Ah well, I guess we'll have to wait and see what this is all about.

Since ST-Ericsson is up for sale soon and going by the numbers, its not going to take a huge amount of money to buy ST-Ericsson.
Could Sony buy ST-Ericsson ? If they do. they can have a big advantage over their rivals in the smartphone business with extremely competitive chipsets and other cellular equipment.

What do you guys think ?

Assuming I'm reading this site accurately then it appers that ST-Ericssons total assets come up to about 2.2 billion as of the end of last year:

Of course Sony is a much larger company, but I have to wonder if they have that much on hand to make a purchase like this.

Cash isn't a problem. Sony has about 8.5 billion $ cash reserve right now and they are exploring investment opportunities right now, especially acquisition of some Israeli medical equipment firms.
If Sony wants to, it can easily buy ST-Ericsson but I don't think Sony is interested. Not because they can't buy (they very well can) but don't want to.

Sony recruit the talents of Wes Anderson for their new NXT Series ad campaign

Wes Anderson of Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums fame, more recently dipped his toe into the world of animation with the release of Fantastic Mr. Fox in 2009.

The ad itself won’t premiere until March 24th, but Sony Mobile have already released a teaser explaining the lengths the creators went to, to give the new video life.

The story of the little robot you see above apparently took approximately 10,000 man hours to achieve using a set of 37 handcrafted robot figures spanning 9 different custom built sets.

This is a global campaign dubbed ‘Made of Imagination’, designed to show consumers that there’s more to their smartphones than chips and circuit boards.

Here’s the teaser video: http://youtu.be/3pd-H1ykIx8

Since Sony is a publicly traded company they have to report key financial data such as cash, incl to the SEC in the US. If they somehow hide major data like how much cash they have they could be in serious trouble, like Olympus.

The SEC filings.

I hope Sony will work with a high-end which includes these spec.

- 4.5" 16:9 HD White Magic Display with Bravia Engine
- 2MP Front cam with HD Video
- Floating Touch Technology
- Exmor R Sensor with Fast Capture, new larger 16:9 sensor with 8~12MP resolution and offers higher quality & low noise. Can shoot 1080p @30fps, 720p @60fps, 480p @160fps, LED Flash light. with manual focus ability.
- Aluminum/Magnesium UniBody
- microUSB at the bottom + miniHDMI at left side both supports MHL ( Video output only supported on one output at a given time ) + 3.5mm at the left side
- 16GB/32GB/64GB Total Internal Storage with Micro SD slot + USB OTG
- 1750/2000/2200mAh Battery with Fast Charge + Inductive charging ( wireless charging )
- 1 included dock for inductive charging + audio output. ( it might support HDMI output using any MHL adapter )
- 1 optional dock for HDMI output, support HDMI Audio ( can connect the phone to any Hi-Fi system for digital Audio using HDMI )

- WiDi for wireless display technology.

- WiFi Direct

I hope future Sony Phones/Tablets/Laptops will feature unified display ( and touch ) technology so connecting a the phone to a tablet or laptop will allow using the tablet/laptop display as the phone display with full touch support ( of course Windows 8 laptops that supports touch ). it can do this also using WiDi also, when the tablet/laptop is disconnected from the phone, WiDi will work then mirroring the phone display to the tablet/laptop but touch functionality will be only from the phone...

You'll probably get this in about 2 years but by then you (and I) will want more, we are consumers in a fast advancing and evolving market, slaves to marketing and tech jibberish. Are you (or I) actially likely to use three different resolutions of film recording? Are you (or I) likely to be satisfied with just 2MP front cam in 18 months? 24?? I probably won't be happy and will want more, even though I'd never use the front cam and only use the highest definition video recording, I'd want more because I might one day use it to show off to an iPhone 6 user, I want more because I can.
