in the xperia sola hands on video, I saw the guy use a piece of cloth to touch/launch the browser. It seems that the touchscreen doesn't need conductive material to response. Does it mean that we can use normal or pointy stylus to touch the screen as well? If this can be done, it will be damn good... a breakthrough for capacitive touch.

I know galaxy note use a pointy stylus too but you can't use any other stylus except the one comes with the phone.

That video seems to misrepresent the screen's fucntion; a cleaning cloth is thin enough that the screen can still detect mutual capacitance points. From what I infer based on the actual technologies, the floating aspect isn't to be used for any actual selection or directional scrolling, it just provides the same effect as hovering over objects/icons/links with a mouse's cursor.

That came from a Sony blog post in December. Before the Xperia S was announced.

I've tried using cleaning cloth to touch the screen but it wouldn't work. I beleive, the capacitive touchscreen requires a conductive material (minimal) to work so with a cloth covering the finger, no conduction available so the screen will not respond.

If the video is correct, it seems when the finger is covered, the floating technology is being used rather than the normal capacitive technology and maybe that is why it will work.

However, I guess normal pointy pen or stylus will not work since for capacitive touchscreen technology, touch area is another factor other than conductive material.

http://www.epihelion.net/capacitive_screen.MP4 My proof to the contrary.

A cleaning cloth is thin enough that a mutual-capacitance screen should still be able to pick up the static from your fingers. A glove, on the other hand, will be too thick. Most clothing fabrics are thin enough to not interfere with mutual capacitance, as well, but denim is thick enough to hinder such operation. I can control an iPod in my pockets from the outside of my pants; it relies on the same mutual capacitance that any modern smartphone's screen also relies on.

So is there something else about the screen shot? Or is it the temperature?

ST-Ericsson to restructure, possibly be acquired by AMD, Intel, NVIDIA, or TI

http://www.phonearena.com/new[....]AMD-Intel-NVIDIA-or-TI_id28121

What Impact could this probably have on Sony's future Mobile phones?

I mean Sony would be buying their SoC's for the Middle End phones and probably Nova A9600 chip for their high end models. Do we see them getting even more delayed or anything like that?

I don't see it having any impact on Sony mobile. We shouldn't worry much about the ST-Ericsson restructuring

Sony applies for 'head control' patent to frustrate non-verbal communicators

The company formerly known as Sony Ericsson applied for a patent in 2010 that's yet to be granted, but you never know, one day it might wind up in a handset near you. Having recently introduced the "floating touch" Xperia Sola that doesn't require your hands to make contact with the display, the next logical step is to make the whole thing controlled just with the movement of your head. Wearing a Bluetooth earpiece with a motion sensor, you then map a custom motion onto a phone action, so shaking your head could answer a call, nodding up and down ends it and going from side-to-side will fire up an app. Designed for when it's not safe to jab at your phone (i.e. driving) we think it's a pretty neat idea, unless you're the sort who, even on the phone, nods in agreement to what the other person is... oh, nope, hung up again.

Huawei’s new quad-core processor tells the competition, “Eat my dust”; Benchmark scores back it up.

http://androidos.in/2012/03/h[....]t-benchmark-scores-back-it-up/

Even Huawei has stepped up its Game with "Huawei K3V2" Chipset. Hope, Sony Mobile takes a leaf out of it and tries to make a mark with the dual core A-15 cortex SoC's in the next half. More importantly want to see Sony with it's own SoC's in the future like Samsung.

A new Sony Tegra 3 device has been benchmarked

http://www.engadget.com/2012/[....]rk-with-tegra-3/#disqus_thread

It looks to have a 1280x720 display and while everyone seems to be automatically assuming it's a tablet, I'm unsure how they're reaching this conclusion. Unless it's something unique about the model number, I think this could just as easily be a phone.

I admit I would be a bit disappointed if this were the followup to the Tablet S and it has a screen with the same resolution. I have the Tablet S and while I love it and use it a lot daily, I would hope that the successor could at least bump up to a 1080p display.
