To me it seems obvious why the top and bottom borders are quite big. Firstly we have to take into account a couple things, firstly, the sensor is large (1/1.5"), secondly, Sony are trying to keep their handsets as slim as possible.
To comply with the second point, the sensor shouldn't be directly behind the screen or there would be unnecessary millimetres added to the thickness. So logically the camera has to be close to the edge of the phone (look at any top-end 'thin' handset and the camera HAS to sit close to the edge). To that end, the edging has to be at least as big as the sensor.
The bottom bezel, is large to maintain an amount of symmetry (plus the extra space is useful for other hardware bonuses). Remember Xperia Arc and it's Elvis quiff? Xperia S and it's oddly long chin? Those design styles do not fit with the much more stringent rules and style new Sony is going with with omnibalance.

The magnifying glass icon on the camera app suggests an improved zoom functionality?(Like the lossless zoom of the pureview? Just my thoughts |

Agreed and well explained bro
@ricky,Then can we assume if your second point validates then the sensor size will be of 7mm and hand set may be 8~9mm
and also the front in leaked pic is blurred ,that may be the holder for additional lens as addon (magnetic) ,this whole proves the increased thickness is for camera centric and the whole phone looks as omni balance

I've been thinking about the odd blur spots no the front of the spy pic leaks.
At first I thought the big black area in the middle was a hideous earpiece and the white blur was Photoshop editing by the poster to hide the Sony brand name, but now we see the black area is probably what the Sony rep stuck over the Sony logo, which leads me to think the white area is a show model serial number sticker or model number or code name (in the past the sticker has said 'show unit's or 'not for sale' or something equally ridiculous), whichever, I'm pretty certain it isn't part of the design of the handset.
Add-on:
I also have an explanation for hiding the back of the device from almost everyone who has had access to it. They've not decided what material to use. No hidden features, no duplicate design hiding in the wild, simply they haven't chosen what material to use. We know from the past that they experiment a lot with materials and maia caught a glimpse of a device with two different materials on the same device, which sounds really ugly and totally away from the current simplicity, the best explanation is that they are testing different materials and haven't decided yet. From the start of honami rumours every material except unobtainium has been mentioned, this is the only explanation that makes sense.

Read the Wiki article I posted above
Steadyshot is hardware based, not software. i.e. it is NOT digital stabilization like in Xperia phones so far.
In body stabilization isn't very likely IMO so it is most probably Optical Steadyshot as Sony has the experience from Nokia Lumia 920/925/928 sensors it made.
