for me that review sets a stake in the ground going forward - it is objective and complete and seems to be the first to be done on a full production retail version of the Z1 - well done GSMA for being the first out of the gate

Btw. since Sony is having a screen lottery, we (the buyers) should have a price lottery in which we would offer Sony to pay 100 $/€ around the price Sony is asking.
But seriously, the amount of quality disparity between the screens in the lottery is really shameful. It goes from last year's Z panel to some of the best on the market today. Imagine there was a PS4 lottery in which some consoles would only reproduce 720p resolution and some would do 1080p. |

@geoffxx - from what i understand triluminos should work on all of them since it's a filter to the backlighting led.. but i honestly haven't read too much up on the tech..
as far as I know the backlighting is built into the whole display unit and is supplied to the Sony factory like that, so I seriously doubt a panel designed for the XZ would be triluminous capable, I remember a guy having an issue with the backlight of an XZ - the whole panel had to be replaced |

I believe the quality disparity is simply down to the fact that all the test units (except GSMA) are preproduction preview units and not retail - they are probably told that when they receive it but don't share that particular info when publishing results (some do) - so until we get more credible reviews like GSMA you'd probably be better ignoring most of it |

That white LEDs are just blue LEDs with a yellow phosphor layer, and the LED backlight array is easily separated from the main panel and the phosphor layer is essentially washed off (that is actually how Sony make triluminous LED backlight arrays, using a SiC blue LED for pure blue colour).

According to the gsmarena article: "There's also the home-baked quick launch mode, which lets you select what the camera does once you press the dedicated camera shutter button when the phone is locked or in standby."
Yup this will be my next phone. Upgrading from a Note 1. Just need to wait for it to come to US/AT&T.
With Sony better supporting AOSP this will make for a nice CM phone eventually.

if it turns out by the first half of oct, there is no c6906 in sight.. i may just get c6903 and take advantage of european deals..
Well, if you're going to wait that long, mind as well wait longer. At least price will drop even further. Also, if I remember correctly, those free gifts are really for pre-orders. Just like how the MDR-1R was free for the Z for the first X amount of orders. Thought, I could be wrong, but you better make your choices quick within the next few days. |

even if it was possible - the cost and effort to rework these panels would be a waste of time and money - the more I think about it the more I think that post is a croc of preverbial sH****** and what about ----OptiContrast -----Panels have a special resin layer which absorbs any diffused light delivered from the backlight- another layer that would need reworked - that just is not going to happen (and I have worked in DTM)
I honestly think that "yes" Sony did do this but never no way in a month of Sunday's on a retail production device - never never never 100% certain |

^^ Maybe Sony Mobile has contracts with display suppliers (like Sharp or JDI), whatever, I think they have their reason if they'll really use the Z/ZL panels in the Z1.
Nevertheless I'm happy about what DACHA/his source said, because he confirmed the Z1 (can) have an excellent display (AH-IPS or PLS), that wasn't 100% sure.
I'll wait until the price of the Z1 drops and maybe until then there are no VA panels left and one or another software update has improved everything.

Very excited by DACHAs news as well as the screen results from GSM Arena. The camera is already quite sufficient for my uses, and it'll be improved even moreso in about a months time.
... damn... Z1 is a frickin' beast of a phone I knew holding out and skipping Z/ZL would be worth it! Just awaiting GSM Arenas battery test to see how it fares there. |

Glad at least GSM Arena have one of the good displays. 1500+:1 contrast ratio is most exceptional. |
