In my opinion SE is very disappointing concerning this phone. Firstly they've delayed the release on and on without even communicating further delays to existing and prospective customers. After having released it silently, buyers found out that the device is at beta-stage and far away from meant to be thrown at the market. Considering the fact this ought to be a smartphone that is quite expensive this is quite a big mess. But not enough with that: instead fixing the many bugs by releasing firmware updates on a frequent base SE is just leaving customers in the dark and in the wait... once again without any official statement of whether at all or when they intend to fix their mess.

I know I know... all that doesn't help. I just had to express my frustration with my P990. SE really sucks this time; they do not even provide a Vista-compliant sync-software for it.

Hi ares, that's the problem. If SE has been testing CDA/ORG R4 firmware for such a long time without releasing it to us, the end users, and then if the developement team releases CDA/ORG R5, say only last week, or worse, only today, for "internal testing" again... so are we going to expect a week 10 year 2007 release instead of week 48 year 2006?

maybe akdemiru f/m version was only meant for testing the new opera version only since its been released for a long time maybe they wanted to test the new opera browser first by using less ram before fixing the ram issue its like one of the early steps of the updating process

hold on guys until we get the firmware update

Maybe just coincidence.....the built-in SE task-manager on my P990 stopped working 2 days ago with no error message (no big deal thanks to SM Pro). But ever since I have NOT experienced any memory leak......phone has been up for 2 and a half days, still same amount of RAM altough same usage pattern as always.

Could it really be that the task manager is causing all those memory leaks???

Donīt want to restart the phone now........hope it stays like that for a while....

I think this is very interesting info, makes it sound like the Task Manager is at fault and the cause of leaks?!

Get rid of it, whack SM in its place and let me map it to the internet button, i'll be happy!

Running BB Connect and the Web means that within a day im down to 2-4mb!

Hi Caspa, you are absolutely right. Running Push Email TODAY, which is what SE P990i has LONG been marketed for (with support of up to 7 different PUSH email solutions was claimed by SE), plus one other "memory intensive" app, such as Opera, or Mobi reader, or pdf+, or QuickOffice, or even video or just making phone calls will cause the phone to have as little as 2MB within hours of a fresh reboot. Worse of all, the memory leakage is so serious that I am unable to restore more than 5.6MB (yes, even SM Pro can't help) just after around 5 hrs of usage

You will be sad to know another truth fact, i.e., hardware key mapping requires the infamous "SYMBIAN SIGNED" which means developers will have to pay Symbian first in order to have access to such features on UIQ 3 devices This turns many developers off and I am afraid creative and innovative software applications for UIQ 3 platform will be few and slow to release For a start, we can count Magic Launcher, Magic Profiles, perhaps even Smart Movie and Tracker out of UIQ 3 platform due to this singning...

Edit: Hi MYB87, the keyword is... "PERHAPS"... we are all speculating and guessing only, as SE officially has never gave us any specific info on the developments of their firmware releases. Even on their so called developer's website, SE had replied that "At the moment we don't have any information about these bugs..."... geez... and btw, this particular thread as of today (28 Nov 2006) has got more than 4300 views, making it the single most read thread of SE developer's forum since P800!

Sorry but you just can not be taken seriously to remove functions would not make it a smart phone capable of all That's the whole point of it.

If you read my mail - you would see that I didn't write anything about removing it from all - I only suggested the option to have the firmware split into different parts - so we could choose...

Pardon? Isn't Vista still in Beta with an ever extending release date?

That's it! Microsoft have bought Sony Ericsson

@jejoma

M$ has released vista to the manufacturers to be pressed into CD\DVD.

Enterprise customers are expected to receive their Vista soon.

I was given a copy 2 weeks ago

anyway, OT.

@EagleRider

I like your suggestion of different profiles of firmwares to overcome the physical limitation of lack of memory.

But I doubt SE would be keened to invest efforts into this.

@adnhk1

I suspect that BB connect is chewing up lots of memory!

I did a uninstall and install of BB connect today. when the phone just restarted, I still have substantially high available memory (approx 12MB free) but after I link with my inbox and started using for 1 few hours, my free memory decreased to just 3.3MB. And even after sm pro did its magic, at best only 5.x MB available. (some 6-7MB disappeared)

I do hope there will be a corresponding release of BB connect with the new P990i firmware.

@EagleRider,

Please explain what you mean as it still makes no sense to me, if you don't start something it isn't running. Maybe the option not to even load apps? is this what are you suggesting? Don't you think they have enough problems as it is currently without trying to have work with even more variables.

Also i don't understand why SE are unable to give a breakdown of what is being done in each new firmware Nokia who have only just started with @ home updating give a very detailed break down of what has been addressed.
Also please just use the @ symbol rather than quoting everything all the time it really is unnecessary.

If you read my posts you will see I'm usually not qouting more than neccessary.

Anyway .... the bigger the firmware the more resources it need from the phone, no matter if you start apps or not. Firmware is just a program afterall - and larger programs consume more power than small programs - when they run continusly - like the firmware does.
