We can read in impressions section: "The fact of the matter is that the update for this model is almost ready to go – this device comes armed with an inbuilt GPS-receiver, sports different design as well as certain software-related modifications."
Hmmm... I don't need GPS in mobile, but SE K850i despite few improvents (like sorting messages in folders) still doesn't offer locking folders. I wonder if Code memory is still so poor as in K800i.
K800i Code memory gives only possibility to enter name for the code and the code (both to short for me). I'd like SE to allow me to put the code name, and inside eg. login and password (much longer than in K800i). Let's say I'd like to enter login and password to Esato forum. So I put Esato forum as name, and then inside it I have a place to put login and password. Now there is no such possibility. And I'm affraid that K850i doesn't give this possibility either. | |

Next K850i on polish auction site:
http://www.allegro.pl/item221[....]sony_ericsson_k850i_nowy_.html
Still it looks like a prototype thing but the price is nice I think.
1900zl = about 500Euro

Well GPS in a phone is a very good thing, but if they will built-in GPS into a dumb phone, i wouldn't stop laughing, there is no worse thing than having GPS in a java based phone, man it's a pain in ass, and i'm afraid that SE will deliver this to us. If the K850i successor will have GPS built-in and won't feature Symbian, WM, Linux or other OS, i won't be looking for successor, i will just jump ship to P-series or Nokia as SE goes for mass-market shit.
Anyway K850i is worth almost nothing, brings only UI improvements which i find bad and too much nokia-alike. The reason why i buy SE is because of their original UI which is very easy and fast in use, i don't need a crappy Nokia UI, that's sick. And the new "Media" section sucks hard. While viewing a photo u get big play button(dunno why? someone can explain? example below):
In a photo explorer i want to see the whole pic not just a small part of it, they could make text as it's kinda transparent, but this big play button is just something unbelievieble. How further will SE go to make UI worse? Don't know, i'm just scared to see K850i successor... |

I'm still getting the K850i as it'll be my travel phone. I love taking photos! Listening to music while surfing internet via Opera.
Linux & Java OS by Motorola is getting powerful, BUT still isn't showing us anything new.
Symbian OS on the S60 side is making HUGE strides. SE you used to LEAD this space not tooo long ago. Nokia was smart enough to kill off segregation of the Symbian platform; just offering different cases and specific designs for various markets without loosing too many features. SE can learn something from them. I expect the P3i to be much better than what the E90 gives in everything except that mad-crazy couch porn screen & GPS. I don't want GPS. How often are ppl lost in the city they grew up in or live in for more than 1 year where public transit or a cabby cannot show them the way.
GPS - RIM had it perfect. Either have GPS chipset built in & or allow for maps to be downloaded over the data network. Yes they partnered with other map makers for the 8800 & Pearl and now Vodafones 8310 GPS enabled CUrve.
MS smartphone > I'm greatly considering getting a Dopod C730 for my multimedia & smartphone PIM needs. If it wasn't for cash atm I'd own it by now! Glad cash is tight atm because it allows me to wait for the RIM 8320 Curve with WiFI.
Something just tells me that the K850i would be PERFECT if it ran UIQ3 just like the Moto Z8! or even Linux OS that match power like the PS3.
If SE was smart they'd fully leverage their investment in UIQ3.1 that the Z8 is using for ALL Mid-Tier & High End phones. Keep the A1 platform for low end phones. A1 is already as perfect as it'll get, refinements aside due to hardware config variances, UIQ3.1 is promising for the Mid-Tier Walkman & Camara line.
K850i's successor no doubt should be UIQ3.1 based.
But we all know SE, slow increments & changes that don't affect daily usuability & efficiency for task execution.

I stay away from Nokia because they stuff Symbian in all their high-end phones. They turn out to be very slow and I don't like the interface either. I hope SE does not stop producing the high-end non-smartphone camera phones. |

I personally don't think they will stop producing high-end non-smartphone camera phones, cause they 'll loose a big amount of customers, these phones i think help sonyericsson being one of the greatest brands cause they "give" many things in the lowest price possible. And with their simplisity in design and use, we love them, and buy them. |

Brief list of differences between A200 and A100
We are not going to go through all difference and rather focus on the main points:
* Phonebook – 5000 entries and 35000 phone numbers, two new fields for mobile numbers;
* Smart Search – search for phone numbers with first letters or digits;
* Media – revamped view based on tags and date;
* Exchange ActiveSync – support for this standard enables data transfers between the K850i and corporate services with only a handful of settings;
* Message classification, ability to store all or only selected messages on the memory card;
* MTP protocol for USB-connection;
* Local connection option for accessing the network established on your PC;
* NetFront 3.4 browser, in-browser flash support;
* Shortcuts to own applications;
* Walkman 3.0 provides core player functionality;
* Photos can have custom tags;
* Slow-motion video playback mode;
* X-Pict Story – slide-show mode;
* Support for up to 32 Gb memory cards;
* RSS – offline mode, ticker in standby mode;
UP TO 32GB of memory cards,in the whitepaper says 4GB,doesn't matter, 2GB works 4 me. |

Anyway K850i is worth almost nothing, brings only UI improvements which i find bad and too much nokia-alike.
The white paper lists some more changes than just "UI improvements" compared to K800 (few of them can be found in K810 as well I think).
http://developer.sonyericsson[....]ls/phonespecs/p_phonespecs.jsp
- Auto rotate of screen
- BestPic speed selection
- 5 MP camera
- Camera mode switch (switch between camera, video and play modes)
- Camera scene modes with examples
- OMA DRM 2.0
- BT available in flight mode
- TrackID
- Direct search to internet and enter address
- Java Platform 8
- Media Center
- 2-in-1 card reader (M2+microSD)
- Music Player 3.0
- Music Player effects
- 3G/HSDPA (850/1900/2100) + GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850/900/1900)
- Photo Fix
- Smart search
- Video blogging
Sobo has also listed some more differences and there is pobably even more changes than that under the hood I would guess. Summing up everything it seems the difference is bigger than one may think (its not just the look).

In regards to your upgrades:
- Auto rotate of screen
novelty item, has any real use?
- BestPic speed selection
moderately useful, but nothing breathtaking. What is more exciting is the fact that the user can select ISO speeds...
- 5 MP camera
marginal bumpup from 3.2 I doubt low light photos will be that much better...will have to see true samples to see, especially the difference between IMX-18 and IMX-20
- Camera mode switch (switch between camera, video and play modes)
novelty for mass-market advertising...
- Camera scene modes with examples
examples? HAH, who cares
- OMA DRM 2.0
if you use file manager to load mp3 files (which is the most effecient and logical way to do it) this feature means nothing...
- BT available in flight mode
cool, if you have BT headphones on flight...
- TrackID
For radio? Most radio stations have their own tracklisting...not super useful imo
- Direct search to internet and enter address
explain?
- Java Platform 8
good
- Media Center
the verdict is still out on this. Not sure if its super intuitive, or exceptional...but it seems to be a definitie bump up from the archaic media manager on 800/790
- 2-in-1 card reader (M2+microSD)
Cool and could be useful if the memory war shifts in one direction... Not super breathtaking though?
- Music Player 3.0
see media player
- Music Player effects
about time?
- 3G/HSDPA (850/1900/2100) + GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850/900/1900)
great
- Photo Fix
useless, can be done on computer far more proficiently
- Smart search
explain?
- Video blogging
meh
---------
Basically what I'm saying is tha tmost of these upgrades are little facelift things, rather than anything starkly warranting a "breakthrough" tag. But here are the other things that I believe have NOT been addressed:
-Same Xenon flash burst strength, which I found weak in vairous low light situations. For example, when in a club, I could never get a solid picture beyond a small ~7 food distance...Couldn't snap picks of DJs or serious ambiance due to the weakness of the burst.
-Call Volume: Was pathetically low in the 790a, and by Eldar's review, it still is quite weak. Terrible for a phone which is supposed to be night (noise) friendly
-------
Does all of this warrant a 600 dollar phone? No. Especially if you already have the 790a/800i, especially when the n95 will be hovering around there... Again, the success of the phone will come down to pricing, if it dips into the 3s/low 4s SOON.
But then, it will probably be a dime a dozen, especially if it gets picked up by a provider, not something I want in my unlocked flagship phone.

Unsure how much more improvement can go here as I consider this area perfect in the K790.
* Smart Search – search for phone numbers with first letters or digits;
* Media – revamped view based on tags and date;Big improvement especially for music, video, photos; considering the big move of OS X/Vista for searching MetaData
* Exchange ActiveSync – support for this standard enables data transfers between the K850i and corporate services with only a handful of settings;Not worth it really. If you work in a corporation and need access to email, then Blackberry's are king followed by other BBCOnnect devices - Symbian & MS Mobile units. Thus waste of development $$
* Message classification, ability to store all or only selected messages on the memory card;SWEET! We've ALL been waiting for this!
* NetFront 3.4 browser, in-browser flash support;no biggy unless the bookmarks can be accessed/shared by other java xhtml apps - Opera Mini.
* Shortcuts to own applications;not sure I understand this but seems nice[b]
* Walkman 3.0 provides core player functionality;
* Photos can have custom tags;
* Slow-motion video playback mode;
* X-Pict Story – slide-show mode;
* Support for up to 32 Gb memory cards;
* RSS – offline mode, ticker in standby mode;[b]This ability alone sounds very familiar like the Motorola Z8's UIQ3.1 OS
2GB works 4 me.
Fa-ward!

- Auto rotate of screen
Hoping this is OS based not application based. I.E. I want to Rotate Opera Mini 4 Beta wide screen surfing
- BestPic speed selection
INdeed I want to quickly save 6/9 photos and ready to take my next shot. Would be nice for them to add a Save ALL function for BEST SHOT
- 5 MP camera
would it hurt SE/Sony to source the CMOS sensor from an actual Cybershot phone?! sure all the features would not be there but would be nice to share some chipsets
- Camera mode switch (switch between camera, video and play modes)
I have NO CLUE how this is relevant?! Play mode? What am I playing slideshow, movies taken only by the camera?
- Camera scene modes with examples
- OMA DRM 2.0
Hurst, this is for encrypted files downloaded from providers or music purchased sites - support for these files. Or Vista's/URGE service
- BT available in flight mode
Bring it ON!just make BT class 1 already pure strong BT!
- TrackID
Again Hurst this is recording ANY music - Jazz festival artists? then send for what the track is
- Direct search to internet and enter address
- Java Platform 8
Everyone complaining about the OS becoming like Nokia's S40; well JP-8 is their implementation research.
- Media Center
- 2-in-1 card reader (M2+microSD)
Perfect. Memory wars begin; cheaper for the consumer
- Music Player 3.0
- Music Player effects
- 3G/HSDPA (850/1900/2100) + GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850/900/1900) Pure tethering fun! Been dreaming of this for TOO long
- Photo Fix Perfect! Hurst doesn't realize how IN-Efficient waiting for a PC to bootup, launch photoshop, transfer a photo to the PC import a copy of the photo, adding gaussian blurr's, and other effects however minimal JUST to slightly brighten a photo/ fix a photo is. I use Photoshop WHEN I use a REAL camera, not cam-phone pics. If I'm venturing to do so then the pic NEEDS to have effort & time to work with; maybe joining more than 1 photo into 1whole pic.
- Smart search
- Video blogging Oh yeah! wait till world cup sneak ins to the press room photos or players duking it out from other sports or those 2 hot chicks from highschool/College class making out in that secluded room. Who KNEW they where a hot item !Oh yeah video blogging will be nice. Home personal movies 4 ppl on K850's recording just 1 scene think of the upcoming movie with Dennis Quad Point of View

Ok so this brings new UI, let's see now what it takes AWAY.
-No camera cover anymore, You have to press button to activate(kinda lame, not really cyber-shot)
-Buttons above the screen no longer exist, were really usefull to me.
-Joystick changed to awkward PAD
-No irda
-Play/pause button no longer exist(a HUGE step behind for me, without that button media player 3 will have no sense)
-Back button removed, now we have archaic red/green call buttons.
-New battery cover, i wonder how will You check the IMEI now when phone is not working?
-Scratch catching casing.
It's not a step forward, it is not what K850i was expected to be? This specs are ok for K810i or K830i but come on not for K850i...
- Photo Fix Perfect! Wake up, Photo Fix already exist in k800i, it's just called diffrent way, "PhotoDJ". But it's the same application, You can compare it with pics in Eldar review
Well just saw the review again, actually the Photo fix is also called PhotoDJ in k850i
