Cue draconian teacher's voice: "Right, now pay attention Hobbs, we're now about to have a cellphone History lesson." LOL.
The date was 1 October 2004.
Out of the blue, Carphone Warehouse had announced those Nokia 7600's at an insane price of £29.95 (approx R420) on PAYG when bought with airtime, on the '3' network. '3' were anxious to get sales volumes up quickly after having a pretty lukewarm entry into the UK network arena. They struck a radical deal with CPW. Now imagine. This is going back more than 2 and a half years. Here was a 3G Nokia, with video, camera, Bluetooth etc. for under 30 quid. It was almost too good to be true.
I immediately ordered 2 (was the maximum per customer) and so did the mrs. Later that day, Carphone Warehouse had (understandably) completely sold out, both online and in the shops, and we only received ours about 10 days after we had ordered them due to the sheer volume of orders that CPW had to get through. One I kept, one I gave to my older sister and the other 2 I sold.

I had to get them unlocked and flashed, which cost an extra £10 a pop. But still one phenomenal bargain. I think its uniqueness/originality is the main reason that I've still held onto it.

And it still works without missing a beat. Now there's an impromptu plug for The Dark Side.

@ Francois,
Hey swaer, good to see The Way Of The Francois appearing on The Graveyard Shift again tonight.
I'm pretty damn envious of you going to those Mpumalanga places, LOL. I've yet to see those famous landmarks/parts of SA (the furthest east around there that I've been is Witbank and Middelburg) and it's on the to-do list for our holiday in SA next year this time.
Enjoy it boet, and I really hope you have a chance to take some cellphone pics of those places for us to check out.

Hey GUCCI,did get to keep your memory card by any chance?I think my w900i is starting to give in as well. It's giving those same 'operation failed' problems lately, but i love this phone too much to have it replaced.I'd rather keep it non-functional in my drawer. It's a real antique and i don't know why they would not be able to revive any phone.

Has the W900i even been around long enough to give those sorts of problems? I'm confused why Vodacom would been unable to fix a phone that has hardly been around for 18 months.

@ gucci and Gola...what the heck did you guys do to your phones for them to go like that? Torture? I mean, I just threw mine around, and it fell quite a few times, but as the battery bunny on TV...Never say die! Try giving your handsets a pep talk...maybe it will work?!hehe!

@ wanqa, I really do hope we get to go. It's all down to planning. My friends wife has to see it down there, I mean, it's her first time outside of China. Also, you say you've been up to Witbank? That is like the pits. It is the worst looking dorp in the country as far as I am concerned. Just dirty and scummy. Once my one friend had a gig there, his last with another band, and we went along. The place was run down, the people looked like they were going to whip out knives and chains at any time, and it was cold. Did I mention grimy? Also had a friend who lived down there for a while.Nice house, but still, the rest of the town was crap. Now past there the country starts getting beautiful.

Okay, enjoy your day all!

@ Francois,
Yup, back in 1993, on the way to the Warthog Rally (motorcycle rally), which was held in Middelburg that year. Yeah, I do remember it being a bit of a 'gat', but we only stopped by briefly on the way through to buy a few things and get petrol.

Dang, that looks like this place last week!

Will try post from the P900, when I can, over the next 4 days or so, as we're off to The Lake District (Cumbria) in northern England shortly. Peace out.

Drive safely Wanqa, and enjoy it Say hi to the owner of the Crematorium from us

Hobbs, for sure, Hopkins is one of my favourite British actors, definitely one of few whom i truly admire. He and Morgan Freeman gave stunning performances in one of the best movies i've seen, Amistad (imho, an even better performance than he did as Hannibal "I ate his liver with beans and a nice chianti" Lecter)

@kryptik: Yeah, in some areas of Cape Town the floods are quite bad although not as bad as the ones you see in China and some parts of Europe(including the UK). One also has to consider that a large part of Cape Town is beneath sea level so some areas are bound to be flooded. Have to say though that the city's emergency services are dealing with the situation quite well.
