Hi to all new, owners & soon to be S700 users,

A month ago I posted my joy and disappointment of owning a S700i (Hong Kong). I even posted the unusual radio / charger stand for those who have not seen the gadget. With extremely unstable transmission and receiving condition I have to face with, SE-HK changed 3 , yes that's THREE S700i within one week. They claimed they have tested, checked and rechecked for instability I reported, all proved to be negative and asked me to collect phone.

The point I want to resolve is that even when the supervisor heard and knew about the poor reception from both the ear-piece and mic, in order to protect his job and career, he did not submit his findings to the service team to find the problems. When SE-HK refused to give me the FOURTH S700i, I knew I am up against a brick wall.

Once departed from SE-HK, I sold the S700i to the street store, and lost just 10% from the price I paid for. I have not even used this S700i for more than 2 days, it has been in and out from SE-HK.

I have reported this case of mine to a local newspaper, and from the reporter, SE-HK did not come forward to speak and no person from SE-HK wants to say anything.

Users who read this - don't be cheated with the S700 looks. The swivel top can swing in either direction but when you want to return to its close position, you must swivel back from the direction it start from.

It only supports 128MB MS Duo, figure out how many MP3 songs you can put in. You don't have full screen video, SE just transfer the K700 firmware over. You also get a slightly better reception with the top panel in the open position as suggested by the incompetent staff.

Lastly, SE Staff suggested I tried all the HK mobile operators to see which one is better suited for the S700, which could be the answer to the unstable reception condition I raised in the first place.

Good luck to all.

I can't help but get the impression that some of your comments are motivated by a case of sour grapes, quite understandable in light of the circumstances, but a little misleading.

For instance, your complaint about the swivel design, so what? I can't say that I am particuarly bothered that it doesn't swivel through 360 degrees and I think that this is probably a design feature to make the S700 more practical.

With all the criticism you level at the S700 it seems rather strange that you should have been seeking to obtain a fourth replacement rather than selling it before that, not to metion that you bought one in the first place.

Quick question about the s700. Will it be able to use the SE Upgrade Service? I just got mine a few days ago but I can not recall seeing that it will be able to use the service. TIA.

Cheers

Ian,

I had look for your "joy and disappointment" post, but couldn't see any S700 posts from you from more than a couple of days ago. A group of us here on esato have had the S700 for about a month now and none of us have had this transmission problem. So is it confined to HK, or maybe even one HK operator.... I know that sometimes I get odd clicking noises, but this is the microphone rubbing on my stubble!!! I notice from your photo you are clean shaven, so unless you've had a long night out this shouldn't be it.

Some other points that others constantly bring up:

1. Occasional re-boots. This is a problem, and SE know about it.

2. Slow data transfer by cable. This is a problem, and SE know about it.

3. Only 128Mb. This is a camera phone, not an MP3 player. With 128 Mb you get space for >500 photos, is that not enough?

4. Full screen video. The S700 plays QCIF video 1:1. So either it's going to have to increase it's video size capability (I doubt it) or do some amazing software extrapolation to fit QCIF to its big screen (I doubt this too - on cpu grounds). The complaint really arises from the fact that the screen is too high res! I have a couple of south park vids and a couple of "adult" vids on and they play really well.

5. Swivel only 180 deg. So how would the electronics from the 2 parts connect if you could freely rotate the 2 parts. Did people really expect this?

6. Shocking Voda branding. Why did these people buy Voda???

7. No clock screensaver. Can you read this screen when the light is off? No. So no clock. Use your watch.

FWIW, my gf immediately commented on how clear I sounded when I got the S700. I too thought the reception quality was amongst the best I've heard.

With a FW fix to sort out the re-boots, this will be an excellent phone.

Great post dude. Says it all. I have been commenting on the differences between a phone, a camera, and a music player for ages but people still think that these phones should do it all. I for one am glad that they do not. For music, I have an iPod. For photos I have a Sony P10. For mobile telephony, I have my trusty s700 and a k700. Life is good. Now if we can get people over complaining about everything.

Sappo, ta. It's like people complaining to (say) Canon that when they put a .pdf file on their camera CF card, then the camera crashes. "but I want to use the camera as a portable storage device for my work!!!". Tough mate, it's a camera, not a portable storage device.

The S700 is a camera phone, not an MP3 player, nor a full screen video playback device.

Btw, i think SE made the S700 not swivel 360 for a reason. And that being so the phone doesn't get worn after time and start slipping either way.

I think it's very practical

I completely agree with your views on the phone. In my experiece my S700i is reliable 99% of the time and the reception on Vodafone and O2 in the uk is better than any of my phones that I have had in the past (and there have been a lot, including various :se and Nokia phone). I agree that having more than 128mb support would be nice but as you say the it is more of a camera phone than mp3 player, Ive managed over 2 hours of mp3s on my mem stick anyway and still have room for over 100 megapixel photos on the phone.
My view is that the phone is amazing. I also have a P800 which hasnt been used since I got my S700 because the S700 has pretty much all the functions that I need that the P800 had in a lot smaller and more stylish package.

1. NEVER happened...
2. This is really boring.
3. Doesn't bother me. More than enough for pics. Because i won't use it as an MP3 player in normal circunstances.
4. Pity, but who knows...
5. I'm glad it doesn't. It would be a disaster in terms of durability.
6. Me don't have
7. I have my watch, and even if i didn't it's so easy to unlock the keys (and screen)...

I just have a small problem with mine in which when browsing the net sometimes the "Optimized charging" warning appears. [addsig]

I would imagine that it will, I can't see SE excluding the S700 from online firmware updates.

Krubach,

The FMA phone viewer doesn't work with the S700. How do you do it?
