Hi Folks:
Found this on Expansys.com:
Chaps,
Bit of an insider speaking here....
Only today was it announce to Orange Customer Services, that there have been complaints with the missing menus. Orange are currently in talks with SE to produce a newer firmware version to correct the missing menu's. Voda have also decided to remove this function on their handsets also. All they have been told is that they will release a new firmware at a later date and it will be downloadable direct from SE to your phone as long as you have a cradle or by taking it to an authorised support centre (usually carphone warehouse).
If you do choose to flash your phone with generic firmware it is worth noting that if your handset develops a fault and you send it back under insurance, when it gets to the repairs team it will be noted and you will get charged for a new handset on your bill as the insurance will be void!
Orange haven't washed their hands of you chaps but SE are particularly slow in reproducing firmware for a manufacturer especially when they (SE) have not got their online update facility working proparly with this handset.
Hope this helps
So basically if we are patient we will get an upgrade of firmware eventually via the SE website or CPW?

I have just written to Orange once again as they have yet to reply to the mail I sent to them on July 29th!
And also, I decided to contact Watchdog (the BBC program) with my complaint! If anyone else would like to follow suit and register their complaint with Watchdog, you can do so at this address:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/watchdog/contact/mobilephones.shtml
The more people that notify Watchdog of this, the more likely they are to do something about it! So get writing folks!! |

Just had a long chat with a guy from Orange customer support, apparently there are notes about user complaints about the firmware changes on their "support knowledge base" which he thought meant there was a significant number of people complaining, he thought possibly enough to make Orange think twice about messing with any future phones (but not guaranteed!!).
However, as far as her had heard there were NO plans to issue any revised firmware, he suspected it was too expensive.
Also as a point of interest he also told me that there is nothing on Orange's schedule for looking at or reviewing the S700 - so don't hold your breath on that one. |

I was just about to buy a K700i on Orange and take advantage of their student deal. However, after reading all this I'm having second thoughts.
The shortcut thing might not bother me too much but what's this about the icons and other changes? Any pics of those alterations would be helpful. Just considering getting an O2 upgrade instead.
Anyone thought of making a dedicated website with a petition and forum about mobile phone modifications by SP's? Maybe lots of signatures of disgruntled customers would make them think twice about wasting their time f***ing with the phone. Perhaps also a website recommending people cancel their contracts and return the phones, and contact their SP's may put some pressure on the SP's to stop it. Just think the money you pay for the services goes onto people in call centres being paid an hourly wage having to talk to people about phone modifications, do you think orange et al want that? |

To be honest when i first got my K700i the orange branding and the fact that they had removed the shortcut function really F**ked me off, but now after a few months of using the phone with these orange mods ive got used to it and it still is a great phone. At least orange users arn't blighted with voda branding which stops u from using mp3 (at the moment anyway). If orange were to have an update which changed their branding i would very much welcome it but at the moment im not to fussed.
p.s. having said that i would definately sign a petition for orange to remove the branding from their phones! |

Hi,
Continuing this thread for a minute, I got an email from Orange today inresponse to my complaint about what they've done to the K700i, and they, again, said they'd done it "in response to customer feedback"!! That's so lame.
This is what I emailed them back (to the Customer Services address and also to the Executive address:
"Dear Rich,
Thank you for your reply to my complaint.
Whilst I'm living with this phone, it is frustrating that it has been "crippled" by Orange and I really cannot see how you would have done this in response to "Customer Feedback".
I cannot see customers saying to you "please remove the most useful features from the phone and replace them with heavy Orange branding and yet another Camera button"!
More likely, it is a cynical attempt by Orange to get people to send more MMS messages, and blaming it on customers is a little arrogant, really.
I know you have had a lot of complaints about the way you have messed up this phone, so let's see how you respond to Customer Feedback this time.
Anyway, never mind - I'll know better next time my contract is up for renewal!
Regards"
Let's see whatthey have to say now!

OK, in the absence of any new firmware from Orange, is there an easy way of reloading the original SE software onto the phone (e.g. without sending it off somewhere) so that I can configure my shortcuts? |

Yes.
You need a T28 cable and then download software from www.totalserver.net. I think you need to pay for a credit or something.
Personally i'm not going to mess with my phone. After 3 months with Orange branding i cant say i miss something that was never there (shortcuts).
Goodluck

Does anybody know if the Sony Ericsson Update Service resolves this problem? i would try it only i dont have the syncstation hardware thingy, it wont let me do it via bluetooth.
I received my k700i this monday, and was trying to change the front menu items, to be honest i cant see myself ever using the "Orange World" so its a bit pointless that being there, i'd rather have Bluetooth on the menu or something else useful. Is this the shortcuts you're all referring too?
Are we certain that an unbranded K700i phone has the option to change this? I cant decide if its worth returning this new contract phone and going with a different provider.... hrmmmmm |

Just thought I'd let you know that apparently a contract phone from either http://www.mobileshop.co.uk or http://www.onestopphoneshop.co.uk will be unbranded. They basically send a SIM free phone, but with a SIM.
I've ordered mine from the latter, so I'll find out for proper soon enough.

hrm i just phoned onestopphoneshop myself, they said the orange ones all come branded, the guy said its illegal for them to give an unbranded phone away on the orange network. However.. he did say Vodaphone and O2 are unbranded....
strange... voda apparantly distort the k700i more than anyone! |
