well man, first things first,i'm really glad to meet you here.
be cool buddy...PERISA is the name,PERSIA is the soul....
ghajar Shahs have changed the name to Iran, this is not the real name...

The reason why I said it though is because people her in the UK say they're Persian because most people don't know what Persia is and they think it's a good way of covering it up that they're Iranian when someone asks.

If anyone asks me I say Turkish and Iranian (not Persian) and that Ahmedinajad is NOT my father so they've no reason to worry.

You ever watched/listened to Omid Djalili's stand up shows, he's the same as me on the Iranian/Persian topic.

Salaam, and haalay shuma khub est?!

Just saw this thread for the first time on Esato so thought i'd drop by and say hi

to clarify on the languages.... Urdu is a mix of predominantly farsi, then arabic and turkish. in fact if you look at the pakistani national anthem, its 99% farsi....heh...take a look:

Pāk sarzamīn shād bād
Kishwar-e-hasīn shād bād
Tū nishān-e-`azm-e-`alīshān
Arz-e-Pākistān
Markaz-e-yaqīn shād bād

Pāk sarzamīn kā nizām
Qūwat-e-ukhūwat-e-`awām
Qaum, mulk, sultanat
Pā-inda tābinda bād
Shād bād manzil-e-murād

Parcham-e-sitāra-o-hilāl
Rahbar-e-tarraqqī-o-kamāl
Tarjumān-e-māzī, shān-e-hāl
Jān-e-istiqbāl
Sāyah-e-Khudā-e-Zū-l-Jalāl

dari (from 'dara' or 'darbari') is an older form of modern farsi, spoken mainly by non-pashtun afghani folk.

and pashto (spoken by pashtuns), in its current form, has nothing to do with farsi whatsoever - it has accumulated farsi, arabic and turkish components over the centuries - but it was its own group of languages to begin with.
sounds completely different to farsi/urdu/arabic/turkish.

oh btw, ANYONE SPEAK GREEK IN HERE??!

hi there people, good to hear from you here...

well in fact, the word "salam" comes from the arabic word Assalamoaleykom...

it has been simplized to salam during centuries, and yes i know,Farsi is the language we are speaking currently not the language that must be spoken..but it would be interesting to know that in old Persian , we say " Doroud" which means hello...

special thanks to our friend bondizi ... very nice issue,i had no idea about pakistan national anthem,it's almost persian...

bye for now...
