@max_wedge, in theory you are right. Only if things were so simple...
To start with, SE had to give me 2 replacement phones (the last one a boxed new set) so my adventure did cost them somewhat.
I still believe that the P990, despite the obvious RAM problem, still has the best combination of features as far as smart phones go.
Having an incredibly successful P900 legacy behind it, most people mistakenly assumed that SE would have made the P990 even better, so perhaps most of the research that should have been done was skipped because of that.
I've been a P900 user for about 4 years now and it was everything SE had said it would be. I agree it was my fault for trusting SE that P990 would be the same, who would have thought that the phone would be restarting when you receive a call!
Still, my problem with SE is not about the technical issues with the P990, not even the fact that the price of the P990 has plummeted down unseen in competing brands, it's simply SE's attitude in handling this situation.
BTW, it's been almost 2 years since SE released P990 and they still don't have a decent PCSuite for it...

Having an incredibly successful P900 legacy behind it
I think this statement only applies to diehard SE fans.
One thing for sure - it was incredibly expensive and I dont think it sold "well" as compared to other smart. It sold yearly in the hundred of thousands instead of the millions like the XDA I/II or Treo |

on a funny way, now a days i see more p900, p910 and p990 in seond hand mobile shops then before. but the sellers usually, cry, cos not much interest for those, even they bought it really cheap, hoping for some win.
also many m600 and some p1 in the shops here, but same story as above

Yes, I've started seeing P1's as second hand too. What is interesting is that the second hand prices of P990s are getting close to those of P910s. On the other hand, N95 is still going strong even as second hand.
P990i: A mistake, a curse and a disgrace So I lowered my expectations and settled for a P1i. I couldn't keep my expectations so low for a long time so now I have an HTC Touch HD |

Thats because SE phones depreciate in price quick where as most if not all S60 phones tend to hold their value.
P1 is like £240 now brand new but N93i is stil £350.

you are entitled to bash them by all means. But follow that up with action (get the phone replaced until you have a working one or money back) ie: make SE pay in the hip pocket where it really counts.
Myself I have given up being personally offended by any corporate's actions: they don't care. It's a one sided relationship and too agro causing to get het up about what they are or aren't doing right.
re: SE not caring, Nokia tried the same thing with the exploding battery fiasco until it was obvious consumers were being deterred from purchasing nokia handsets because of the fears of exploding batteries. Then lo and behold Nokia decided they'd give everyone a new battery. Those with the affected batch of batteries anyway - I got one myself for my N70
Is SE unethical? No I don't think so. Rude and frustrating, but not unethical. You can always get your money back if you just talk to the store where you bought your phone. If you couldn't get your money back (since it doesn't work as intended), THAT would be unethical.

N95 was released over a year after the P990. Also, N95 is still available in the form of N95 8GB, so the model is still current. Also some people will still see N95 as better than N95 8GB due to memory expandability which gives it residual demand. Whereas P990 is effectively superceded by Px series (P1, the coming P5 etc), so you have to expect it's price to tumble.
Wait til N96 is available, prices of 2nd hand N95's will drop sharply.
However it's true that Nokia are holding prices better than SE at the moment.

I'm totally disappointed with 's Lastest cellphones, why?
I'm a big fan of the 900i, and the Swivel design in general and i'm not satisfied with the 910i being it's natural successor because it's a Slider and 2MP Camera without the auto-focus (which is even worse then the 2 years old W900i) and it's soo overpriced for it's features. (And the rumors of a swivel that was canceled due to the market was one of the worst decision that has made)
And that's an example of how is becoming worse each day in my opinion.

The W910 isn't W900's successor. Not at all.
I think W980 is. |

Are you sure about that? Their actual release dates should be pretty close. When I bought my P990 in the autumn of 2006, N95 and P990 were about the same price and both were relatively hard to get hold of.

There is also another difference. Try selling a P990 to anyone versus selling the N95 1. There would be a whole difference. You would practically have to give away the P990.
Heck I had my p990 listed late last year on eBay with a 4GB card,DS-970,extra battery, leather case, extra chargers, screen protectors, card reader and tons of applications and I could not get it sold for 120GBP.
It was actually costing me more to try to sell on eBay because of listing fees and nobody wanting to pay that price for it.

Hi all,
Actually you don't need to look anywhere near as far back as that look at the newly realeased W960 Flagship Walkman Smart Phone which i believe is approx £450-£480 in the shops alreday selling on this forum for around £220-£240.
That to any one is huge drop and very quickly whilst if you buy and keep your devcie for it's life cycle it makes very little difference if you like to change your devcies frequently buying a SE new makes this an expensive experience although buying shortly after release makes some of them a relative bargain assuming of course you are not buying it new retail.

@NightBlade
I don't think that the W980i is the successor of W900i at all!
Why?
A successor should have better aspects of nearly every Aspects and still the same in an aspect or 2 at least. From what i see the W980i has 8 GB internal memory which is good, but no external memory to play with (and that's ok because 8 GB of internal memory is more then enough and will drop the price of the phone for not having aan external card slot), 3.2 MP Camera (although without auto-focus and no flash) that's not so bad, but it's a Flip phone and that's a reason not to be a natural successor.
(imo a successor should have the same form factor and much more updated specifications, and W980i got nearly good specifications but could've been better).

the swivel is dead, the market research indicated that the swivel only had a small support base and I don't see why SE should keep it just to support a few diehard swivel fans.. W900 was a one off model (based roughly on S700, which itself was a one off), there is no successor.
It's easy for you to say it was a bad decision of SE to drop the swivel, but you aren't responsible for SE's bottom line. A manufacturer has to sell a certain amount of handsets before they break even, so obviously SE determined that it would cost them more to develop new swivel phones than they will make back in sales.
Infact I wouldn't be surprised if W900 didn't actually turn a profit. It was a successful model from a marketing point of view - it was a showcase phone and showed the market at the time what SE was capable of, but I don't think it was every intended to be a long running formfactor. I also think they were feeling the waters for swivel support, and found the waters too shallow to justify continuing the swivel formfactor.

Someone can ask Mr. Komiyama why is it that the Japanese market SE always gets a better quality and design phones than places outside Japan? ??? No matter what we are getting now or even in the future the Japanese SE are always better. Why can't mobile phones ever matches the quality and designs of the Japanese. If you ever owned 903SH, 904SH, 705SH ....etc you will know. |
