The slimness is probably why i will buy the p1i as the p990 as we all know weighs our pockets down like a ton of bricks. Although i agree with you that it offers not much more than the p990 in terms of paying another Ģ500 or so. |

Is it confirmed in any way that P1i is the new replacement for p990i? I can't find such info on the net.
If this is going to be the new SE flagship, then SE has lost to N95 already, even if it is released now.
Anyway, its true that p1 is elegant , smaller and lighter compared to p990. Other than that I can't see any reason to switch to p1i.
All in all, I don't believe that p1 is going to replace the p990i. There has to be another more improved and directly comparable to n95 phone.

The P1 is better specced than the M600/W950 and P990 in terms of more memory, a better camera and a better screen. If anyone bought the "first generation" UIQ3 device then there's not a major compelling reason to upgrade if you just look at the hardware.
This is not the first time have done something like this. The P900 was a good phone, but when the P910 came out it had a better display, more memory and took the Memory Stick Pro Duo.
Even though the P900 hardware was Pro Duo capable, forced you to buy the P910 if you wanted more than a 128Mb memory card.
If you had a P900 was it worth spending a lot more money to get these new features in the P910?
Personally I didn't think so, but others coughed up the money.
Right now the whole situation suits me fine. My P900 died before the P990 arrived and so I skipped the first generation UIQ3 devices. When my contract is up for renewal I'll take a look at this P1 phone.
Is it the replacement for the P990? Only time will tell, but the rumours are already starting that we'll see a new flagship smartphone announcement before the end of the year.

no, this is not the successor of p990 (Eldar from Mobile-review hinted about that in the forum there)
me: so long p910
P910: r u abandoning me?
me: yep (sigh)
P910: who is it? N95?
me: no. although N95 is very very good, but i can't have 3 batteries in my pocket for recurrent recharges
P910: who is it then?
me: the son of your brother, the son of M600. the one with 128 ram-3.2mpx cam-wifi-slim-metal...
P910: r u reselling me?
me:no, i'm just gonna drain ur battery, pack you back in the box, and lay you down in my drawer.
P910: hope i served you well
me: you did son, you really did. |

Yes I understand the comparison and I agree that P910 wasn't an upgrade for p900 owners although p910 had some nice improvements over the p900. Now as it seems from the p1's specifications, you get nothing more but a p990 with an 3.2 Mpixel camera and less bulky. Again, I feel that this is not an upgrade to p990 in any way at least so big to make me think to replace my p990i.
I would expect a better flagship phone from SE to be honest. A phone capable of beating N95 in every way or at least to be on the same par, as it was when p990i launched. |

i clearly stated on this thread that the P1i is NOT a replacement for the P990i, it is merely an alternative in the smartphone range and an upgrade to the M600

That's an opinion of yours, not a statement of fact. In the words of SE, the P1 represents "an evolution of the P Series" - nothing to do with the M600 at all.
In fact, the SE press release declares it "the 5th Generation P-series" - which can only mean:
P800 (1st) -> P900 (2nd) -> P910 (3rd) -> P990 (4th) -> P1 (5th)
Can't make it any plainer than that.

how is that so? isn't that faulty logic? just cos' it happens to be 'an evolution of the P series' in no way makes it the successor to the P990i, same way as the W950i can't be the successor to the W900i. the M series was not mentioned, but does that mean that it's not the successor to the M series as well? |

@Boinng, why do you keep saying that??' What batesie says, is what i also said to you before, and his based on SE internal info...the P1 is the P990 successor has much has the W810 was the k750 sucsessor, or the k810 is the k800 successor

Ares, I'm commenting on observed fact, you're commenting on internal whispers and rumours. SE themselves, publically, say the P1 is a 5th generation P. So which generation was the P990?
Look at the press release - http://www.sonyericsson.com/s[....]1_1&zone=pc&lm=pc3_1&prid=7951 - the very first bullet point is a direct comparison between the P1 and the P990 (it's 25% smaller if you didn't know). Now tell me it's not being sold as a replacement for the P990?
Don't tell me there's something else waiting in the wings, of course there is, there always is - but whatever it is, it didn't get announced yesterday, and it's not going to beat the P1 to the "next generation" P-series title.

Answers to why P1 dosnīt have GPs and HSDPA.
Why no GPS?
-You can use bluetooth GPS. Itīs not build in because of batterylife.
Why no hsdpa?
-SE choosed to not include it. Not enough intrest yet in our target group.

So what??? Its a fact the P1 is an upgrade to the P990 in terms of smartphones, no one is saying otherwise. Like the k810 is a generation above the k800, but not its true successor (thatīs sofia)...
Man, do what you like...near the end of the year, when the real p990 will be presented (hspda, internal gps, faster processor, flip),etc, we can talk, and then i will be curious to read your opinion

What if have decided not to make a second generation "M" series and instead come up with a fifth generation "P" series to replace the "M600" and then the sixth generation "P" series will replace the "P990"?
