Hi!
I have a M600, and I think I found a solution to speed up movie start on it. The movie files needs to be changed a bit, see here:

just upgraded from the m600 3 days back and settling in to the P990. i know the firmware issues will get ironed out in time but just a couple of points about the phone's keys and size:
1. Handset seems just too bulky. the whole device seems out of date cause of the size, specially after having used the m600. I know the feature set is greater but the thickness is just too much to justify.
2. The middle 'selection' key has to be the most difficult key to press in the world. You can't use your thumb cause the up or down keys get selected and so u have to use your nails on the thin and slippery plastic, it gets quite uncomfortable.
3. The QWERTY keyboard keys seems very plasticy to the touch and again they start to get uncomfortable after a bit of use.

I'm on the verge of selling my P990i and am thinking of buying the M600i instead. My reasons for doing so:
1. I already have a K800i and Vodafone 903SH which actually has a better camera than the P990i, hence most probably I won't be using the camera always either.
2. I don't really use WiFi. But if I want to, I can use my Dopod P100 which comes with built-in WiFi.
3. Single most important reason for the switch to M600i, as many mentioned, is the RAM problem on the P990i, which is causing frequent restarts, to the extent its becoming unbearable, and renders a lot of apps unusable on the P990i. Initiating IM+ is almost impossible. I use that a lot. Surfing the web on 3G, is also a nightmare, also due to insufficient RAM, and restarts will happen in the middle of an email checking session. Even after I've upgraded to R7A, the latest firmware, its still very unstable.
I want a stable phone as my main phone, as that's the reason I got the P990i, an all-in-one phone which can actually substitute my PDA, make me leave my other phones at phone whenever I want to bring only 1 phone, as it has a decent camera. Too bad, the RAM is not making things better.
I've started looking for a buyer for my P990i. So most probably I'll be a happy user of the M600i White edition in the near future. (I hope the M600i lives up to my expectations, as I've heard pretty good comments about it from existing users).

@sonyclie77,
You're going in the totally opposite direction as I did, I just flogged my m600 for a P990. The grass is always greener on the other side

SE is using all of us as if we are their test users and they are perfecting the phone according to our findings. I'm sure in about a month or two, the P990 will be working bug Free with the helps of new FW on the way. So don't sell your phone just wait ))))

Funnily enough the M600i suffers from lack of ram as well you know;), so you wont be any better off.
My P990i has the latest firmware and is bloody stable, yes there are a few apps that wont work mainly agile messenger but its no big deal. Other than that everything else works perfectly fine.
God knows why your having so many problems with apps, perhaps your installing the wrong versions or something. You havent given us any examples of particular apps that dont work. Seems to me you have a faulty phone, in that case get it replaced for a new one.
One must have app is Swiss Manager which is free and is absolutely brilliant in that it releases ram for you and also allows you close certain apps and keep some of them open. Also has the option to compress ram so you can squeeze a little bit more out of it.
Last time i re-started my p990i was almost a week ago according to Swiss Manager, thats pretty good if you ask me. I use 3g often, BT works fine and WIFI works like a treat and it hardly crashes...well not that i have seen lately. I get about 12mb of ram whereas with the first update i was only left with 5 mb of ram. Swiss manager helps alot in this aspect and i would highly recommend getting it...in fact im buying the pro version as soon as its available...its that good an app.
But as i was saying, changing to the m600i isnt going to help you in any way as they both, p990 and m600i run on the same o/s. |

I still can't see how sony ericsson is getting away with selling the p990 on this crazy price tag, I'd spend more cash on the m600 than on the p990, and I think the m600 is expensive

Well, I'm aware that both the M600i and P990i has about the same amount of RAM. But I'm also not sure why there's frequent restarts on my P990i. Like today, I was texting a mate when it suddenly restarted. Sigh... Had to retype the text message all over again as its not saved in Draft when it restarted. M600i, on the other hand, is much more stable according to some mates who owns both. Not sure, but I'm sure going to test it (the M600i) thoroughly before I spend my hard earned money on it.
Swiss Manager, had it installed on my P990i, and I must say thats the best thing to happen to the P990i! But with it onboard, my phone still has frequent restarts. You think its due to a faulty phone? Hmm... Strange thing is that friends who bought the phone also has the common problem. Unless its the phones sold in my country which is faulty?
But mate, thanks for your advice.
Cheers!

LOL! Maybe the grass is indeed greener on the other side.
I'm still considering the idea. But anyway if I can get a good price, I won't hesitate in selling the P990i and consider the M600i. If the P990i's become stable in the future, might re-consider buying it again. But that's a big BUT.

i feel sorry for you guys that have lots of crashes...mine is pretty much stable since the latest firmware, and what we need now is that the memory management is improved, so that we can run opera and 3 or other apps at the same time, and not just one or 2
i only had a reboot when testing swiss manager at the same time with opera, mig33 and media player - this made the phone unstable, but that was an extreme situation - only future firmwares will make this possible without problems
but then again i was able to run opera mini + mig33(msn) + media player and swiss manager without making P990 unstable...
the problem is running opera and other "big" apps like pdf+, quickoffice, etc at the same time of other apps
nevertheless, with some discipline (using the task manager/swiss manager when needed), i can do all i need in my business and leisure activitys, and the phone doesn´t reboot a single time

The thing I like best about my p990 so far is probably the least significant - the little "doodle" option in the SMS application that lets you send a picture as part of a standard text.
It's something I've never seen before and it adds that personal touch to messages. |

@spawn, will the w950i also be having the same genetic defect of lack of ram as the p990i & the m600i???
sorry for goin' off topic people but i'm really looking forward to the w950i & hoping it's bug free.
all inputs are appreciated. |
