Evening Dr Jools,

I wonder if you could give me advise on 2 problems?

1. I have filled the HDD on my MacMini I'm using it as a music / video store and surfing - Do you recommend external Firewire or USB2 HDD? (guess either way spin speed and ave seek time important for video)

2. My baby is connected to my Plasma via a DVI ->HDMI (the depth of colour is amazing compared to DVI -> VGA on the same TV) but the overscan is bugging me. My TV can only move the picture up/down or left/right ie not reduce width or height - DO you know if an ATI driver for the video card exists to allow this alteration?

TIA

Mr M

PS Google for March 20th if you're a real man fed up with the one-sidedness Valentine's Day
(apologies in advance for the Hijack)

1. Firewire is definitely is what I would recomend for Mac. USB2, although it claims to be as fast as FireWire 400, in reality isn't. Also there's some nifty bus-powered FireWire drives which means you need no separate power supply.

2. Is there not an overscan option in the Mac 'Displays' preference pane when connected to a TV? There is on my eMac...

Alternatively, you could try installing the ATI Displays Updater for after-market Readeon 9200 graphics cards, it also installs an ATI specific preference pane which has additional options (although I can't say whether overscan is one of them!)

Howdy @Jools tonight's questions:
I purchased my MacMini with OS X 10.3.7 pre installed, do I still have to fork out the full price for OS X 10.4?

Is it worth it?

PS no joy with the overscan - no options in Display or ATi controls will will try my DVI SyncMaster to test if it's the plasma thats causing the options to be surpressed.

All the 10.x upgrades are paid for ones, 10.3.x and 10.4.x upgrades are the free ones. I'd definately say that 10.4 is worth it (but then again, I didn't pay for my copy!).

I'm thinking now that maybe you don't get the overscan options unless the Mac detects a PAL/NTSC display. Are there any controls on the monitor itself to squeeze the picture about a bit?

You won't be able to use iSync via USB as all Sony Ericsson phones sync via Bluetooth only. On my site (see sig.) there's an iSync 2.0 Phone Plugin to enable W900 support in Tiger.

The most you can do with a USB cable is use it for transferring files to the memory stick in the phone. Although many people with W900's are having problems getting the phone to mount on the desktop, like the K750, W800 etc. do. At present there seems to be no solution to this.

I was wondering whether auotmator will rename my photos? You see i have loads and i cannot be bothered naming them one by one so wondered if it would do it for me, just number them 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 etc etc. Is this a stupid question i have never used automator you see.

You could set up an Automator Action to do this, but tbh I've never used it. For renaming files sequentially (and other renaming things) I use File List.

There's this one but I've never tried it and its a paid for product. To be honest, I always make my own CD/DVD Inlays myself in a page layout software like Macromedia Freehand, but you could almost as easily use Word, Pages, AppleWorks etc. once you've set-up the page template.

Could you possibly recommend a decent file protection application i had a quick search and came across one called folderlock, do you use this at all?

I only really want to protect a few picture and document folders, just so people in college don't get too nosy.

Thanks.
