But, unless i misunderstood your previous post you said the radio was inside the headset - meaning the actual radio hardware was contained in the headsets remote. If you damaged the headset, or use a standard headset like a HPM-70, would the radio still work.. ?

I think the remote control is glued to the headset cord (at least it looks like that) meaning you can not use it with HPM-70. It depends what you mean with broken headset. The ear plug can be broken while the remote controls is fine and hence can still be used with the external speaker (I assume its possible since there seem to be a bidirectional communication path).
I should point out this is just my guessing. But I guess you have already guessed that.
