There are quite a few screenshots of UIQ 3 at this link if it hasn't already been posted before. I'm not able to upload them as images from here sorry:

UIQ 3 looks really promising. I'w been thru the whole pdf
I think most phones in the future will have UIQ 3.

Maybe it will be the theme for in 2006

I understand your point. But at the same time for those who prefer the keyboard rather than the hand writing recognision (or something else), this solution provides a better ergonomic (the phone is more stable and not as flimpsy as P910).

For your second idea, while the idea may sound great you have to ask your self:

- Is it technically possible to implement without changing e.g. physical aspects.
- Is it possible to manufacture (even if the can be designed, its not sure it can be manufacture due to too complex design).
- How much would such increased complexity cost (and how much can we charge the consumer).
- Do we want even more moving parts ?

Yes, my idea would give the same stability as the P990 since the keyboard would be where the numeric keypad is

Yes it's possible since it's the same keyboard as the P910 and wouldn't add any thickness at all to the phone.

It's less complex than a flip since it wouldn't require a hinge ... so no moving parts. I originally emailed SE a long time ago regarding this... this was during the P800 days when I wasn't satisfied with their pathetic 'peg' keypad. I was happy when they introduced the P900.

My original idea was to have the keyboard snap on via the bottom connector. This way, when not being charged, the bottom connector is also covered and protected from dust and sweat. I originally emailed a 'recessed' bottom connector so that the profile of the phone wouldn't change when the keypad is attached.

All the technologies I have suggested have been done by Sony on their Clie line a long time ago, so manufacturing is not an issue. If you notice, the current P910 thumb board is similar to the snap on keyboard on the Clies from way back.

Which is where my frustration with the P990 comes from. I feel the implementation is a step back from where they could've taken the keypad. Had they kept the P910 keypad, but made it a snap on instead of a flip, it would allow an infinite number of possiblities and marketing opportunities (so I hope someone from SE design is reading this)

If the keypad was a snap on it would allow a reversible keypad, thumboard. Serviceability is simple... if your keypad breaks, buy a new one... no need to leave your phone at the service center.

Additional "accesory" possibilities... gamepad snap on... media player snap on (or game pad/media player reversible)

For those that do use it to play games... it allows a multitude of controller options... PS2, PS1, arcade, d-pad, etc..etc... each one could be a separate accessory kit, or offered as a "gamer kit" for the P990.

My thing is, the P-series had so much potential even in it's P800 stage. And even with the P990, so many things are still locked out. Landscape mode was something that should've been introduced in the P800 fw upgrade... this should be a mode available to ALL apps. Not just browsing (kinda weird, since on desktops, monitors rotate to give you a vertical orientation, while on the P990, the browser rotates to give you a horizontal orientation) Strange as well that they dropped the wide-screen aspect ratio of the P-series in favor of the older 4:3 ratio (they should've made the screen 400x240)

Anyway, like I said, that's probably why they kept the name within the P9xx range and not a P1000.

I would recommend this phone for anyone with a P900 or P800. P910...eh... well... if you have UMTS in your area... then this is a good option. The K600 is just weird to have as a UMTS phone... the memory is too limiting.

But for me, I'm skipping this model and waiting for the next one. The design execution is just too poor for me to consider this "worth it" for now. Combined with the fact that none of my friends have 3G phones anyway, so the main purpose of "upgrading" to a UMTS phone is pointless for me.

I honestly would've upgraded had it not been for the keyboard being fixed on the phone. The P990 is THE communication tool to have. It covers almost every communication standard in use today! From cellular, to WAN, to PAN.

Sorry to dissapoint you, but statistics clearely states that world wide, Symbian is increasing its market share (to 50% at end of 2004), Microsoft makes no progress (stays still at 20% at end of 2004) and PalmOs is decreasing (to 17% at end of 2004). That is, in the mobile phone market (not PDA market).

That's nice to know. I never liked the Palm OS... it was cute when it was the only decent PDA out there... but they never really improved it enough. And forget MS... too many restrictions and licensing BS. When Quartz was first introduced, I was happy to see an OS that could actually be adapted to the machine, and not the other way around. Symbian, for me, was always a very refined mobile OS. Even on those old Psion machines. It was quick (considering CPU) and very intuitive. And it always had the most useful office apps. Which brings me to my other long-time gripe with the P-series... why can't I fax?!?! As archaic as faxing is... some of the people I work with still rely on this stone age technology. UIQ has it in its feature set.... why isn't it enabled in the P-series?!?!? I don't care if I have to physically plug in an RJ-11 cable into the butt of the P-series... it would be a nice business feature to have... specially to archive faxes and sign stuff on the go.

Your post was too long to read. But I'll check out the Clie to get better understanding for your (or Sonys) idea. A link to a Clie site showing what you mean would be most appreciated.

Also, bear in mind, whatever solution Clie has may be patend by Sony and hence can't be used by anybody else (at least not without paying a fat licence fee). Now this may sound as a no issue since Sony partly owns SE, but in reality it is.

Furthermore, didn't Sony stop manufacturing the Clie ? The selling did not go to well if I remember correctly, which may give a clue that Clie was not such an good inovation after all.

That's my prediction.

Sorry to disappoint you, but your prediction is wrong. Just wait for the wednesday the 12th and beginning of the next month...

Its very hard for SE to keep up with nokia, i wont be surprise if nokia announces smartphones with wi-fi 4mp camera and hdd. If they do then P990 will be outdated before its released.

If they do, then N91 will be outdated too. If they announce something soon, it will probably be some mid rang phone or so. Probably nothing special that has not already been announced by them (same phone in another shell).

When we have statistics for 2005, we can proceed this discussion. But with what it is know until now, Symbian dominates Windows on mobile phones.

You should try another OS once and while and you realise what satisfaction realy is, and its not spelled W I N D O W S. Windows may be a good OS, but its certanly not gods gift to the human kind (well Bill is no god after all).

I still cannot get over the fact that SE's top of the line business model phone (current P800, 900, 910) cannot sync between a PIM's folders/categories and the phone's folders.
Do you think SE's product managers will have realized, by now, that they really need to provide this "simple" function to their users?
You think the P990 will finally have this feature in its PCSuite application? Or, maybe they will go back to the XTNDConnect application that used to work so well in the T68 days.
I am just hoping ...

P990 is now more a Sony product than an ericsson & although i wanted Wi-Fi, that phone is too thick, when i buy a new SE phone i expect to get a "Wow" facter, i dont think the P990 has it. also i also do not buy into 3G because its a con.

perhaps the best way to sum it up is that this end of the market is much more competitive than when the p800 was released and was pretty much unchalleneged.
the symbian figures show its a popular os but most of those figures are series 60 as se share of the smartphone market is quite small compared to nokias ( yes i know some people dont think s60 is a really smartphone but the figures say it is)
it will be interesting to see how the p990 fairs against many other competitors that in this sector now.
i think nearer the time well get a better idea from reviews etc as to how go the phone is in the real world as this is the important thing not whats on a press release
