Looks like the drive's buggered, tried a few discs with the same result. I might take the drive back and see if they can give me a replacement or a part-refund or something on my next day off. I suspect it has had a bit of a bang at some stage sadly!
Unfortunately I can't take the adapter back as we've had them for a good year or two now. I've also found these can be a bit intermittent, I do sometimes get a 'page can't be displayed' message, which I can usually get rid of by trying another refresh. My birthday's coming up soon, I might ask for a new adapter or two for it! Any recommendations on what brand of adapter to go for?

Just another thing, have you checked that USB 2.0 is enabled? Both in BIOS and in Device manager?

Hey cyco, quick question...how do i turn javascript on using windows xp. Trying to use youtube from a laptop and its not working. Saying we have javascript off or an old version, but it won't let us download a new version.

Assuming that your using internet explorer, go to tools - internet options - security and click the "default level" button for all four security zones. If it still doesn't work, there's a tickbox to allow / disallow javascript in the advanced settings.

I think you'd be best trying a repair reinstall which basically replaces all of your system files and critical registry keys but does not delete any of your personal data. If you're not sure how to so this, give us a shout 
Is this XP or Vista, by the way?
My first plan of attack is to open Safe Mode and edit the registry by doing a comparison between my registry and that of a mate who has just got a new Laptop (therefore no unnecessary additions like spyware). I haven't attempted to repair it yet, thought I'd get your advice first...
A repair reinstall sounds good but I don't know how to do it. Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Anything which lets me restore the OS without losing all my family photos/videos and V630i backup files would be great. 
The OS is Xp sp2.

Providing you have your XP installation disk, you just boot from it as if you were going to do a clean install. When it gets to the stage where it checks your hard drive(s) before formatting, it should detect that you already have windows installed and prompt you to press 'R' to repair it. That's it! It then basically proceeds to install windows without formatting the drive first, hence not deleting your personal files. It's perfectly safe providing you read every screen of the set-up app carefully to avoid accidentally formatting the drive by going one stage too far and missing the 'press R to repair' bit
It should only be done as a last resort though because occasionally it doesn't work and the PC won't boot afterwards. You're then left with the task of hooking your hard drive up to a different PC and fishing all of your data off manually, unless you've backed it all up of course.
So I'd try the safe mode registry edit that you suggested first, you've got nothing to lose by trying it

here's a problem I have started having lately.
if I click on a wmv in a web page I get the "internet explorer cannot display this page" message but I can right click the link and save the file with no problem.
I can also copy the link, go to windows media player, choose open url and paste the link and it starts playing immediately.
previously these same links would start playing as same as I clicked them
I have checked the association of wmv to windows media player is correct and if I find a wmv on my pc with windows explorer and just click it the video will start playing in wmp as expected
any ideas please?

Only thing I can think of is to right-click on a .wmv file, select Open With>Choose
Default Program, and choose windows media player. I know you've already re-set the default programs but I read somewhere that doing it this way might actually resolve the problem for some bizarre reason...
Have you installed any codecs or new players recently? Could be a conflict or incompatible .dll file somewhere?

hmmm. the "open with" thing solved the problem. I can now click the links again in internet explorer

The Safe-Mode registry edit didn't work as I couldn't get Safe-Mode to boot.  I tried booting the repair disc and that didn't work (wrong disc - I should've tried the Installation disc first as you said - I misunderstood). Gave up and handed my laptop to a friend of a friend along with the discs and he worked some magic and now its all-go with important files intact but some apps that need reinstalling, a small price to pay I guess.
Recieved some stern words for messing with things out of my league...

hi mate i just got some ram for mylaptop just installed it and iv been told to go into the bios to set it up by the company i got it from
do i have to do this as its allready showing up when my laptop starts ie on the vista welcome center page loads up

Nope, if Vista can see it then your BIOS has already picked it up and everything's hunky dorey
Nowadays it's normally only if you're into overclocking and serious tweaking that you need to configure BIOS manually.
