Sounds like you've tried everything here, but read through it anyway just in case:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926449

I have that link permanently on my bookmarks

Failing that, a non-destructive sytstem restore might do the trick.

Dear Cyco of Vision,

I have created a virtual DVD drive on my system and would like to remove it, please do tell how I remove such a thing if thy knowledge permits!

Thanking you kindly,

mais non..

daemon tools is an appp useable by silly windoze users that enables you to mount isos and the like.. ie a useable drive...

but it's a bitch to remove by all accounts..

I myself just use the disc utility that mac give you reads iso, bins the lot...

hehe

Sonic screwdriver maybe?

It depends on how and what created the virtual drive. If it did it the normal way then it sticks a link to an autoexec.bat file in the registry which gets run every time you switch the shed on, creating the drive. But it's usually software like Movie Jack and things like that that are to blame.

Lets see if hijackthis picks it up: Download hijackthis, run it and click the 'Do a scan and create a log file' button then copy n paste the log file here. It's the ones that start with "04 - Run" that we are most interested in but post the whole lot anyway.

Roxio is looking like a possible culprit! Uninstall the bugger and see what happens. Nero sticks virtual drives all over the place too, might be worth checking the settings and / or uninstalling that too just to see.

Failing that, there's a few others in there that I've never seen before. I shall activate my brain's wi-fi and directly consult Google's servers on your behalf if need be...

Hey Cyco, remember my pc just giving up the ghost and you said summat about Norton Ghost being something that could have helped repair it.

I've got 9.0 & 10.0 here on disc, they ARE originals but it says they're for XP/2000 PRO only.

My lappy's Vista Home Prem. and I'd prefer if it didn't go the same way as the other one.

Should I install it?

Yes, it shouldn't hurt to try. Most incompatible apps either won't install or just don't work properly rather than bugger everything up.
