its not really like that...with swiss manager we can see all apps that are running, even the hidden ones - the thing is, the amount off memory available, with the same number of system apps running on memory, will decrease over time, with apparently nothing there that justifies it

@Space_2, nice explaination!

Another point, on dissappearing RAM(memory leakage or otherwise); it's hard to administrate the phones efficiently at the moment, because the current crop of available administrative tools are very limited in function......but as in any OS, it's possible that processes or threads could be taking up excess RAM, due to unclean task management(have seen this before in UNIX systems; it's a PITA).
We should be able to assume that have created a clean, efficient OS(from the kernel, throughout), but as the phone suffers so badly from the RAM issues, I'm guessing not......
As more admin tools become available, I'll let you know what I can find(R3B Voda f/w).....

@akdemiru

Can you please try out the still photo quality with Autofocus on ?
I wonder if this had been improved or remained the same and most pictures taken this way are still out of focus...

Also, could you upload that firmware file somewhere and share it ?

I think you didn´t get the firmware we will be get will most probably be different than this one that is being discussed??? And you are judging something you don´t have yet??? Wait till you have it on your phone, then rant at will, if justified

Btw, one more clue which shows that the ewn firmware is VERY close: check out the developer website of SE ( http://developer.sonyericsson.com ). They posted an article about the update of the Java virtual machine. Which means with the new firmware of M600/P990 there will be new features in the phone (the java vm will support SVG images). And they clearly state that it will be supported on the P990/M600 in the upcommming firmware release.

@ares
I don't have anymore SwissManager PRO, but Swissmanager doesn't show ALL the applications. It shows on my m600 only the Main menu, Standby, Phone and Connection manager, but there are a lot more apps/processes running. These are the ones with the standard user interface, but there are a series of servers running. Just run Procinfo from SE, it shows ~30 tasks, ~80 processes and 100+ threads With only SwissManager and Procinfo running as user applications.

From Space_2's link:

"The W950 Walkman® phone will ship with JSR 226 support whilst the M600 messaging device and P990 smartphone will be retro-actively fitted with JSR 226 support from software revision R5A01 and onwards."

akdemiru's handset shows as R4A(ORG, although, worryingly his BT IS R5A01).....

Actually it seems that they hear often of the p990 And doing there best to improve it.. here is the answer from a Johan in the developer support team.. this was said in a bugthread..

Hi all and a big thanks for all your reports, your will to improve our products and your patience (which has been bigger than the atlantic ocean so far).
At the moment we don't have any information about these bugs and we are as you hoping for the next firmware update since we are getting tired of getting bashed all the time .
To implement the new symbian and uiq versions on a new hardware platform has been challenge for SE which many thinks is not over yet.
However SE has as you might know bought UIQ so we are deidcated to the UIQ platform and to continue the work of making this platform/products as good as it deserves to be.

over & out
/Johan

so we shouldn't forget that these people working on it are also humans..

Hi to all,
do you find the P990i sound quality pure? I noticed that with low volume in a calm environment, a crackling noise, on some words pronounced by the counterpart, occurs quite often. You can initially think that it is due to the network but it looks to me very similar to the crackling noise issue snagged several times on K750i and solved with a new late f/w release.This crackling noise/sound may be even heard with the headsets on (but not with loudspeaker).
Might you please check for this (even listening to your voicemail) on your phones and provide your feedback? If this occurs on your phones too it will have to be snagged to SE (as done by several people for K750i) in order to have it fixed in a next f/w.
Thanks [addsig]

I got my p990i 4 days ago and I have to admit that I haven't done anything since then but play with it. It's freaking super piece of technology and it's amazing to see how much SE has packed in 4x2 inches. btw, I am talking about hardware here!

I love the keyboard, WIFI(god bless SE!), 2MP camera, FM

I still own p800, p910 (I haven't sold them yet!), but I have to say p990i belongs in a different category. It's awesome.

In terms of software:

The good:
*** not much to say here ***
- I like FM radio interface - simple and easy to use
- I like th new coloring scheme
- download window in the browser
- battery usage. it's great. better than p910a.

The Bad:
- UIQ3.0 . I have no idea why 3.0 had to be so different from 2.0. I love the simplicity and performance of 2.0. I miss 2.0.
- all application crashes frequently (kernel exec error)
- memory issues. I am surprised
- usability and navigation is very confusing
- SE has made it very difficult to get to frequently used options
- can't save images in the browser

And the ugly:
- it's very slow. I can't believe it SE release the phone with so many issues.
- no dedicated speakerphone button (hardware/software). it really pisses me off. I have been waiting for this feature for the last 4 years since I bought p800. They have made it so difficult to use speakerphone.

- I think there is no "usability specalist" on the UIQ team. Looks like the user interface is designed by programmers and I don't think SE did usability test.
- no playlist in video player. How hard is it to add this feature?
- web browser
- it won't recognize links to real audio/video files (http://service.real.com/test/). If you click on any of these links, it won't launch video player. First you have to save the link, then go thru 3 other screens to play it.

- Video player -> Online
- I couldn't get even one link working. For everything, it says "Link is broken and do you want to delete it?". I have no idea what's the format of the link. I tried putting a links from the real.com site I mentioned above. Nope, it just won't work.

- Video player -> mp4
- I can't play any of the mp4 files found in Google video. You can find lots of mobile videos here (http://srobbin.com/mobilevideo/)

- opening batter cover case. Gosh, I hate it. I simply can't open it no matter how hard I try. I am afraid I am going to break it soon.

- phone hangs frequently. And even the Taskmanger can't help here. And I can't open the batter case to reboot (offcourse after trying the power button!).

I can go on and on and on....with issues. But I love the phone. I am not going to return it! In the last 4 days I have realized how great WIFI support is in this master piece.

But what I am saying is, SE could have done better job if they had a usability guy on the team, better Quality process and faster bug fixing proccess. They have done a pretty good job with the hardware (kudos to the hardware team), but the software sucks. It's very poorly executed.

Come on SE. Release a patch soon. With better software, p990i will be a killer device and I don't think there is anything that can come even closer today. People talk about N95, but I dont think it has the same sexiness and appeal as p999i.

I call my phone "A Beautiful Mind"! I know I am crazy about this!

Happy holidays

I like the phone and have RA7 firmware however it this Smart phone is little more than a phone at present and only just a phone. Here is a catalog of issues I have had using the phone in the last week.

1. random crashes - the phone just switches off for no reason
2. I have pop email set up correctly (from SE site with vodafone) and cannot access any emails at all - It worked once this week and never again - its almost s Vodafone live problem
3. If I try to use wifi and access email or the web the phone almost always ends up coming up with kern-exec error and flashes errors constantly - the only recover is a switch off
4. I had a bizarre issue this week - the phone stopped responding at all - I could swithc it off and had to remove the battery to reset.
5. with the phone security lock enabled some times I am asked for a password when a call comes in and sometimes I am not.
6 for a 3rd generation operating system the UI is very clunky and non intuitive. I have a K800i and it is a dream to use
7. the speaker phone 2 button press works on occasions and not on others - weird error.
8. accessing ebuddy.com crashed the browser on log in.

And on and on and on.

@PhoenixSpiri,

I asked akdemiru the same question earlier and his reply is "yes auto focus is working just like a normal digital camera". So, hopefully, the new firmware will fix the focusing problem.
