Symbian Foundation officialy anounced it a few months ago that all s60 v5 phones(N97, Omnia HD, 5800,5530, Satio...etc) are compatible with symbian^2
I'm not being funny, but where? I can't find that announcement on the web, or particularly on the Symbian Foundation, can you? And how is it worded anyway - do they actually mean to imply that any phones will be updated, or is it just a theoretical possibility?
Seriously, don't repeat this stuff unless you're absolutely sure and you can back it up with proof - because people really have a tendency to take stuff like this at face value when in reality it never quite turns out like people assumed it would. Just because a hundred people on a forum say it, doesn't make it so.
Unless they're explicitly stating it as a forthcoming feature of the Satio (which they absolutely aren't) there is virtually no chance of it ever being updated to a new OS. Symbian^2 phones are coming, but this current generation isn't them, as far as I know.

Theoritically, the Satio hardware is perfectly capable of running a next gen-OS. But would there be an official update? No one knows for sure.
I agree with Boinng; no one should hold their breath for an official ROM. If it happens, well and good. But don't count on it as a sure thing unless someone puts it in clear cut words. |

I'd like to remind you that.
haven't updated P900 to support MS Duo cards eventough it was capable of supporting.
Don't expect much from about this. This is very unlikely. Especially considering 's new upcoming products.

Is there a way to force the high framerates? Still trying to get mine to higher ones, best so far was 18.75.

I realise I'm coming over a bit strong in my post above and I really don't mean to be attacking the poster, or Symbian, or SE, or the Satio - it's just that I've been around forums like this for a long time and all this Symbian^2 stuff sounds very familiar, and is likely to lead to a lot of heartache for the early adopters of phones like the Satio, if they don't understand what's going on here.
Put simply - Satio is a S60v5 phone. There has been no promise of a Symbian^2 update in the future. It's not in the Symbian Foundation's power to issue such an update even if it was possible, this would have to come from SE. If you're at all interested in the Satio, you should buy it for the features and interface it has now, and not on the strength of any future update which it will, in all likelihood, never get.
DON'T go around hinting that it's going to run Symbian^2 unless you have a statement from SE to that effect, or you will end up dissapointing yourself and others! Something tells me that when SE inevitably do announce their first S^2 handset next year, there's going to be a lot of Satio owners getting needlessly upset about it..

Erm... I'm not sure. Even my night recordings are shot with 29 fps. Perhaps turning on the video LED will do it for you?

I've been using the Satio now since Friday and, let's for now forget about the issues relating to the OS, and concentrate on the phone itself.
The camera is stunning, and video seems pretty amazing too. No complaints there.
The audio quality is also great, but there are some concerns.. some minor, some quite bad.
1) On the normal phones, SE has been quite unique in making sure that if you unplug the headphones (or unpair a headset, or the battery dies etc) then it stops and asks if you wish to continue playing through the internal speakers. On the SE built media player, they've left this out which is most annoying.
2) There's no compatibility with the Bluetooth watch. UIQ had this, and interestingly - S60 has third party drivers (unofficial) so it's perfectly possible. Okay, so the watches aren't best sellers but for a flagship model, it's an oversight.
3) When dialling, SE has left off the letters on the on-screen keypad. Samsung figured this out with its recent I8910 HD update.
4) Speed; We have the same processor as the I8910 HD, the iPhone 3GS (S for speed!) and the Palm Pre, so why is the music stuttering when I am doing other things? And when I tried to watch a film downloaded from the PlayNow Movies site, it was cutting out and pausing all the time because I had Gravity running in the background.
It is my belief that the SE software running on top (the home screen) is the cause of all of this. I will shortly try turning it off and using the standard S60 screen, but losing all of the shortcut icons and buttons is what makes the Satio better than the competition. It's not quite HTC's TouchFLO, but still pretty impressive - except it looks buggy and SLOOOOW.
5) No headphone socket. Come on, the W995 had one! I know Idou was in development from about the same time (maybe even earlier) but that does beg the question - what's the Aino's excuse?
6) RoadSync won't work properly with Google, and there's an update on the RoadSync website. After registering online, using the serial number attached to the Satio's copy, I am told that the update isn't available to me. Presumably this means SE must pay/approve the update. I am guessing that this will be the case with all of the other pre-installed applications. If I want the latest version with bug fixes, I've got to pay.
7) A PDF viewer is pretty standard these days. Am I really expected to pay for the ability to open a PDF after 14 days? No seriously?
Back to the video player; When you quit and go back later, it remembers where you left off (Yay) but it sometimes gives an error on playback which means it goes back to the start. I also have my suspicions that if you reboot, and the player re-loads, it also loses all the bookmarked positions. Again, looks like I've found another bug.
My conclusion is that the Satio has shipped with a desperate need for a firmware update, and I'm looking at SE's own software as a reason for the problems.
But, that camera is pure sex..
I'm in the process of trying to do a full review, but it's like a rollercoaster ride!

Strange, the symbian guru reviewer said she could have up to 15 apps (including gravity) running without any slowdowns.

S60 5th > SF^2
There's a very relevant discussion of this on the latest All About Symbian podcast All About Symbian Insight 90 @ 23'51".
Quick summary - No, S60 5th edition phones will not have SF^2 back-ported to them in all probabliity. However they may well have many of the features back-ported and included in Firmware updates. The new firmaware V2.0 due for the N97 (and which the N97 mini will have at launch) is apparently very nearly the same as SF^2. So Satio/ SE purchasers have to hope that SE keep on top of their Firmaware upgrades (a somewhat patchy record). |
