@ Jojo,
Well here's hoping that your day doesn't end as bad as you're predicting.
The main UK holidays (Summer holidays) this year are from 20 July until 3 September.
Pupils go to the next grade at the start of the new academic year in September.
There are 3 school terms, roughly 12 weeks long each. There is a 1 week half-term break in the middle of these and a 2 week break between each full term. (ie. Christams and Easter.)

In South Africa, the state schools have 4 terms. The main holiday is in the Southern Hemisphere's Summer, thus it's over the Christmas period. They are from very early December until mid-January.
The academic year in SA thus runs from mid-January until early December.

@ HOBBS,
Yeah, there's a few choice pics of him amongst those colourful African muso's on the 'net.

@ Jojo,

Apart from being a classroom-based teacher in a primary school (so I teach all the subjects), I am also the school's Languages Manager (Literacy and Modern Foreign Languages) and a member of the school's Senior Management Team. On top of this I'm also the 'Upper Phase Leader', which means I look after the 2 most senior grade wings in the school.
I was also a school governor from 2003 until recently, but I have not renewed my 4-year term of office for this as I have enough on my plate as it is.
The next step up the ladder for me would be Assistant Head Teacher, then Deputy and then Head Teacher/ Principle.
I have no ambition to a be a principle in this country though; the amount of paperwork confines our principle to her office for most of the day while the deputy does the more day-to-day running of the school.
Personally, I'd perhaps be happy to obtain an Assistant Head post in the future, but deputies and principles rarely have much opportunity to teach around here due to admin etc, which kinda defeats the object of why I chose the profession in a way.
As it is, I can't complain too much with what I've managed to achieve here so far.

I remember reading somewhere that you help run the family business?

@da wanqsta: Eventually got to see that documentary on the prison gangs this evening. It's shocking, I'm scared that it glamourizes some gangsters. Just listening to the youngsters being interviewed was scary.

@ da brixsta,
I'm a bit embarrassed about that DVD. Honestly, it amazes me how different some of the extended family is to the mrs. When last I mentioned that I would post it, we managed to drop it off early that week by her cousin in Kent, who was flying back to CT the following day.
Unfortunately the poephol 'forgot' to pack it in and I assumed that the padded envelope, which had your work address on, had been posted.

I've now got the DVD back; Mrs A's parents are coming over from CT in July and I know they won't let me down.
Oh well, even though you've seen the documentary now, at least you'll have it on DVD in a few months' time as well.

A really tragic part of that documentary for me was when that leader of 'The Americans' gang on the Cape Flats, Kevin, reflects with obvious, deep emotion, the unfortunate circumstances that led to the death of his child when the kid found that loaded gun in the house.
As for that notorious leader of The Number gang, well words fail me..

If you think of it,my wife worked in the Cape flats for 2y,before been transfered to the notorious St. Albans prison where she did not like it at all and managed to get a post in Patensie. Even Quinie got transfered from St. Albans ! I still think PM (Ctown) is one of the nicest 'normal' prisons to work for. Nice 'click' . On another note - in a few weeks I (and my wife) will be striking for the very first time in my life! @Krypta - how about you chaps? The government is in for a big blow if they carry on 'sleeping on the job' as usual. VIVA Cosatu VIVA

@da wanqsta: We probably have some of the most deranged inmates in our prison system and the fear of incarceration fails to put them off, especially the numbers. I work on the Cape Flats and have to agree with Ross Kemp, there are very few, or no positive role models for youngsters.

I'm sure an experience like that would indeed make most of us think twice.

The court-room part was comical.Got in the podium and said to the judge,'Before we start Your Honour I would just like to say that what I saw down there, you'll never see this face again' ( I must have looked totally freaked out) and he says,'I bloody well hope not.So what do you think I should do with you? So the first thing that entered my head was,'Give me a R50 fine.' So he says,'OK,you've just slapped yourself with a R50 fine.Dismissed.' And everyone in the court-room burst out laughing and theres me standing in shock cause of what Ive just been through. My boss paid my fine and I got the hell out of there.

Hehehe Amandla Comrade Mario

For the first time under the post-94 government i'll be embarking upon industrial action as well... During previous years i was active in my participation, but as Mario correctly states, the Govt is sleeping on the job, and i truly think most of us have had enough. When one considers the fact that some very conservative unions like the Suid-Afrikaanse Onderwys Unie, Solidarity and CTPA are throwing in their weight it makes one realize just how gatvol people have grown with the State in general, and in my case, with Geraldine's foaming-at-the-mouth rhetoric. The woman must think us all all illiterate and incapable of seeing the big picture.

Speaking of the St.Albans prison, i sometimes do counselling amongst the younger offenders who are housed there. We (a group of teachers, clergy, psychologists etc) were recently called in after gang fighting had erupted in the juvenile cells. It's awesome how much destructive these kids can be in their quest for weapons. The plumbing in the shower was completely dismantled, steel dinner plates bent in half, torn lengthways then sharpened to a razor edge, the rear end of toothbrushes sharpened, the sliver of metal which makes up the business end of a disposable razor embedded in a wooden peg and used to deadly effect, etc etc.

Anyway, on a lighter note, have you guys given any thought to participating in Boba's project?

P.S. Wanqa, that looks a lot like a blank shot, boet...
I'm not superstitious, merely mildly stitious.
