I still have R1CB001, yet the update service function in the phone tells me that I have the latest program version, even though the R1ED should be out by now. Has anyone ever updated their phone using the phone's built-in update service? Is SEUS working better?

Can you explain this: "even though the R1ED should be out by now". Who says this? SE, you, the man on the moon? Dude, the update will be out when it is out. You can do like me and many others and use WOTAN to update.

for those on the new firmware, in the main file manager screen can you now use the keypad to access the various folders like in earlier models or do you still have to use the joystick? thanks.

Bug Found

While listening to music (through speakers) that I had increased the volume of, my home line rang. So I hit the Play/Pause button while in the music player and the phone gave me a prompt saying " Continue playback through speakers?"

I don't think that's a bug. I think it is an intended precautionary message. I was able to replicate it every time with ease.

What's the reasoning behind SE releasing new sw versions to places like Wotan, who charge for services, for 2-3 weeks before they go on SEUS? It seems to me that they not only get some functional testing for free, thanks to useful discussion groups like this one, but they make you pay for it ?!?! Why don't SE make free beta releases available, say like firefox do ?

I really don't see the need to pay for upgrades that are going to come shortly for free: the new sw doesn't sound like it is worth it, but most importantly, it just doesn't seem fair.

This question has been answered to death in this very thread. Read back a few pages and you will get your answers.

They release firmwares to third party suppliers (mostly mobile phone vendors such as O2, Orange, Vodafone etc, but also companies like Wotan, Total Multiserver etc) before they release the generic versions on SEUS so that they can get it tested on many real-world networks by the mobile phone companies and discover any bugs that might arise due to the environment the phone is living in. This can prevent embarrasing mistakes such as R1J on the K750.

Companies like Wotan and Total Multiserver have access to these firmwares during the 'external' test phase and release them to us as users for money.

Personally I would not use such a service just to get a firmware slightly earlier than I normally would. However, I would (and have) used the service to:

a) Debrand phones. SEUS will put branded firmware onto a branded phone, but you are free to do what you like when using third aprty companies.
b) Remove network locks if you want to change network
c) Update your firmware if your vendor does not keep up to date with SE releases and you are experiencing a problem with your current firmware.
d) Interchanging phones that are physically the same - e.g. converting a K750 to a W800.

Hope this makes things clear,

Mike
