I am having trouble with my external hard drive. I originally bought the drive when I was still using windows - it is therfore formated to the FAT32 file system and was full of movies & music. When I first moved to apple my macbook used to read and write to the drive just fine.

However out of the blue the drive suddenly started refusing to mount in mac os x. But quickly switching over to windows via bootcamp and the drive would load just fine. I therefore decided that ti was probably down to the file system so I burnt to dvd the stuff I wanted to keep and emptied the drive. But the problem I now have is how am I going to format it to HFS+ is os x won't recognise the drive (it doesn't show in disc utility at all). I have done a complete reformat of the drive in windows (still to fat32) and check for bad sectors but still no joy.

I am reluctant to fork out for a new external hard drive when I have this one that is completely empty and clearly in 100% working order as it functions perfectly under windows.

Any ideas / suggestions?!

Thanks,
Tom

Well I fixed it in the end. When I stoped to think about when the problem began it coincided with updating to Mac OS X 10.4.10. Searching and learning more about the updates contained withing 10.4.10 lead me to find the following solution:

1. Download the appropriate version of the Mac OS X combo updater; the one directly precedent to when you started experiencing the problem (for instance, 10.4.9 if you started experiencing the problems under 10.4.10, or 10.4.10 if you are already running 10.4.10, but started experiencing the problem after a security or other system update) from Apple's download page, but do not install it.
2. Download and install the shareware application Pacifist
3. Drag the Mac OS X installer package by dragging it onto the Pacifist application icon.
4. Click the triangle next to "System" to expand it
5. Click the triangle next to "Library" to expand it
6. Click the triangle next to "Extensions" to expand it
7. Scroll down and find the file IOUSBMassStorageClass.kext. Click the Install button in Pacifist and enter your administrator password.
8. Find the file IOHIDFamily.kext. Click the Install button in Pacifist and enter your administrator password.
9. Find the file IOUSBFamily.kext. Click the Install button in Pacifist and enter your administrator password.
10. Restart your Mac and check for resolution of the issues.

Remember to delete kernel caches and restart afterwards. (With OnyX or similar).

Hope this helps someone - it sorted the problem instantly - hope apple fix this in Leopard as am only getting this drive in shape ready for Time Machine!

These USB bugs in 10.4.10 are a pain in the neck...

You can also check for firmware updates for your hard drive from the manufacturer, which may also help with mounting issues.

On a related topic...

How many of you will be at your local Apple Emporium at 6pm on Friday to pick up your shiny new Mac OS X 10.5?

I'll be at the Birmingham Apple Store, hoping to be amongst the first 500 and get a T-shirt!

Nope... the official launch is at 6pm.

All Leopard. All night.
This Friday, October 26, Apple retail stores will open from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. to celebrate the availability of Mac OS X Leopard. Visit a store near you, and you’ll see live demos of Leopard and have a chance to be one of the first to test drive the most impressive version of Mac OS X yet. There’ll even be free T-shirts for the first 500 guests to visit an Apple Store. [Oct 24, 2007]

Well honestly I wouldnt bother about antivirus at this moment and leopard has secured things just that bit more than tiger so you dont have to worry about malicious code doing anything without your authorization.

It depends what apps you have but as we speak alot of releases are been pumped out to fix adaptibility as apple kinda kept the final release away from developers there was so much they could work on to finalize things on time.

So I say max a month and most if not all will be up and fine. But at the moment all the usual's for me are working fine.

@marques what nzb program are you using there? As that is a must for me before changing over to leopard.

Thanks.

I have a eboot.pbp file that i would like to convert to an iso and burn to a cd. Just wondered if there was a mac app to do this at all. Or some other way of getting it on a cd to use in pcsx. It is a PS1 game.

Just thought i'd bump this, really want to give this game ago.

The thing is i wouldn't have any anti-virus if it was up 2 me, but my uni say i have to have it to access the network and internet from my halls. I wonder if i just uninstaled it would they know?

For those installing leopard keep an eye on the battery once its installed its juicing out like crazy. I am keepin an eye on it but its draining quicker than on tiger no doubt.

Be interesting to here if anyone else is having the same problem. I will calibrate my battery this weekend if I am free.
