Try here - http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/05/20/rubber_iphone_rumor/ - it could all be nonsense, but that's the fun of pre-release rumours really. Seems pretty credible to me.

...and that would be near enough exactly one year after the 3G launched
shame we're in 18 month contracts... not that that ever stopped me for somethig I wanted!

Yup - I'll be exactly halfway through my 18mths in June, so can't afford to race to the shops just yet. That's the downside of the 3G's success for Apple really, a large chunk of the most enthusiastic, ready-made market for their new phone will still be chained to the old one for months! Look out for stories of "disappointing" uptake in the first six months and the new iPhone being outsold by the Pre, etc..

I keep telling myself, with the 3.0 OS update, my old 3G will be like a new iPhone...

The existing 2mp camera was already outdated when the original iPhone came out, and even more so last year in the 3G - it's obvious Apple aren't taking part in the megapixel race. It's also obvious that with these tiny sensors, and the kind of optics that you can squeeze into the back of a slim smartphone, higher pixellages don't necessarily mean better quality.

If the rumours are true and this is phone's going to be more video-centric, with iMovie video editing on the device itself, it's probably wise of them to keep things sensible in the sensor department anyway - and save the "HD" model for next year.

Totally agree with this point. Some people can get lost in the whole mega-pixel jargon and feel like they MUST have an amazing camera on their mobile and if the next iPhone doesnt have a gazillion mega-pixels then it's gonna be crap. The iPhone has never been an image-centric device... it's a topic that gets brought up over and over again, but the iPhone cam is what it is and it does what it does.. point n shoot n email. Done. You dont 'need' a 5mpx / 8mpx cam to get your point across that 'I'm here...look'. Personally i'd be happy with a 3.2mpx on the next iPhone

The iPhone's camera has never been a stunner, it's not pretending to be anything more than essentially a webcam on the back of the phone. Even so, it works well for what it is.

My last phone was the HTC Tytn II, it was touted as a bit of a sharp-shooter at the time and came with a 3.2mp sensor with autofocus. In a really good light it produced reasonable pictures, provided the inside of the battery cover (and thereby the camera lens cover) wasn't full of dust, which it usually was. In anything less than perfect light, the viewfinder become a horribly laggy, slowmotion blur that made any kind of composition completely impossible.

In practice, although I wouldn't say any of them were technical masterpieces, I've probably taken far more/better pictures with the dust free, non-laggy iPhone camera than the HTC's. And I can't say fairer than that.

What i would like implemented is at least some options in the camera, digital zoom is something that i think was put in an app via the app store iirc, no reason why this cant be put in. Auto-focus would also be handy. But then i guess if it's kept simple then people wont be expecting much from it.

I expect autofocus will make it into the next one.. don't know about the other options, I suppose a good selection of the apps which drove the appstore to success over the last year were to do with providing those sorts of extra options, effects, and enhancements, so maybe Apple won't want to be treading on too many toes there. That said, they're bound to extend it a bit if they're adding video recording.

lol yeah... to a certain extent I don't think Apple care too much about treading on toes when it comes to apps that extend stock apps functionality, they probably see it as more of a way of letting Dev's do the hard work and then they implement it in to their own apps. Like a lot of the voice recording apps will be redundant as soon as OS3.0 is introduced.

Is OS3.0 going to be released when iPhone V3 is announced in June do you reckon, or will it be in-line with iPhone V3's release?

I'm not sure but I think the 2.0 update was available to older iPhones and iPods before the 3G was released, so I guess it will be the same this time around? Hope so, anyway!

The only downside to 3.0 is the fact we'll be back to a .0 release so can expect a few bugs for a while... roll on 3.1 and 3.2!

I hope so too - cos that means it could potentially be only a couple of weeks away! That said, they're on beta5 of OS3.0 now and last time with OS2.0 there was about 10+ betas before the release... but i guess that could have had something to do with the implementation of the App Store etc.

And yeah, very true that mate... 2.2.1 is nice and stable and we'll be reverting to a firmware which is new and different and needs stuff ironing out. Cant wait though! Well in theory i can, but i dont to! Pleased also that OS3.0 has no signs of blocking the jailbreak, which i'll be doing straight away
