Actually Dubai was the first place (or at least one of the first) the P800 was released and I'm talking about a proper consumer sales package not pre-release. So I don't think it's out of the realms of possibility that the P990 will come out there first. Whether it's at airport duty free or one of the phone retailers in the city is of little consequence........

This is actually true. the p800 was released in four countries in dec.2002 and UAE was one of them; besides i was one of those lucky b@st@rds to get one before anyone else; being released worldwide(see my first few posts).
Sad to say, its nowhere in UAEs shores, i've friends at official retail stores here and they themselves have no actual idea when it is to be released. I trust them since they've always been accurate with launch dates since they have seminars regarding new phones a week before its official launch in the country. Got to hold a W810 even before it was distributed here. So im pretty sure that its nowhere near...keep you guys updated

I used to wonder why they release phone in the middle east before other areas?
But I think I may have the answer, I spent some time working in Bahrain last year and Batelco is an absolute shambles, their SMS system went beserk for around 20 days in November and not one person their could help they simply did not know what to do about it! and bearing in mind I was working with a Snr Prj Mgr from Batelco belive me they got the message delivered to the right people !
I was getting text messages repeated on average 80 times per message it got so bad I had to turn off my phone in meetings at night etc etc.
I belive they distribute the phone to regions where they know there will be operational problems first so that they can bug fix them before they release them into their core European and US markets, no one else i spoke to about the problem seemed to bothered they just seem to accept the problems as part of everyday life there! in Europe they would be dead in the water.
I have owned the ... T68i T610, P800, P900, P910, P990, W950, P1, W960 But SE have now totally lost the plot.

I've also experienced the SMS problem working in the Gulf and it drove me absolutely mad. There are customer service issues with many of the Gulf networks and you're right people do kind of put up with it. I think you'll find that the Middle East is a core market for phone manufactures and is just as important as their other markets. The reason why phones are released there earlier than the rest of the world is that all phones are sold SIM free and independent of the networks, therefore the time consuming testing phase that networks in Europe go through just doesn't happen.

you sure about that? I got my P800 in NYC in Oct of 2002.. and i thought NYC sucked back then for new phones first...

well, being a member of esato during dec of 2002, all those who had P800s before dec had protos i guess as i remeber back then being a lurker for at least 5months before signing up. dec was the official release date and i even had one made in sweden unlike others made in france.

imo, they release phones in the middle east early since people here(specifically UAE) buy the products as soon as they get released in the market. being filthy rich, they can afford any phone or electronics at high prices. money is nothing for them, i mean i have an arab friend here who buys the same car(a porsche cayenne) just because his old one had a nasty scratch on the bumper

etaab: to a certain extent it does apply in other places, this is why you can usually get a device earlier from eXpansys than you can from the networks (in smaller quantities of course). I am merely suggesting this is more pronounced in the Middle East.

I got that email too!! Got a bit excited, then calmed down. Will search other phone shops online to see if it's really true that stock is arriving next week. Don't want to jump the gun!

That was my thoughts. Either it's genuine or they just want to cash in on a mad rush from people who are anxious to get their hands on this piece of kit, then you'll not see phone for another month or two! Hope it is genuine though, my P910 is on a life support machine now!!

The ad only says the Nokia N91 is available from the 10th April - not the P990! - Sorry

The ad. also says the P990 is "arriving mid April".
I've been aware of this site for a quite a while, they are usually very reliable.

Here's hoping!
