to my very surprise, the 1 gig sandisk card is really a 2 gig card!! but i'm yet to format the other unallocated space. it's read as 1.85gig on winxp diskmanager. 950MB healthy and 948MB unallocated!!!!... LOL

Don't get me wrong, i'm not actually advising people to use this method... BUT
File corruption issues happen even with "normal" cards (hundreds of threads about it), so we can't be sure of what is causing those file corruptions, can we? [addsig]

I'm telling ya all, its because of the update of the firmware. My brother does'nt have any of these problems, he is using his memory stick (a 512 converted into a 1024) without any problems...

I have and it works fine. Better then the other method i tried!

EDIT:

If the 256 card are actually 512mb cards, why are the 512mb card actually 1gb card then? It doesent make sense. Why dont they just bulk buy 512mb and partition for a 256mb card? Whats the point in having all these cards, all with partitions. ?

it seems like all Duo sticks (64, 128, 256, etc.) have half of its total memory space unallocated.. What is the purpose for this unallocated space? It really deosn't make sense. I converted my 512 to 1Gig using slead's method and it is working fine.. but there must be a reason why Sandisk put unallocated space in there since all sizes have it.

Yep. That's strange. The "production cost cut" explanation seems to go down the drain...

I'm inclined to say it's a glitch on Sandisk's card interface that incorrectly reports unallocated space available.
Now two things are valid:
- Either the unallocated space really doesn't exist.
- The allocated space shouldn't be visible, since it's redundant memory (for error recovery?) [addsig]

But according to some posts in here, they were able to put in more than 512MB to their cards, that means the size is really 1Gig.. hmm...

Done mine 1Gb

It reminds me with CPU's.
Most are made at a very high spec but are degraded before they hit the shelf.

e.g. AMD 2800+ can be a 3200+

I was able to fix some problems...

its working fine now, no more data corruption or deleted files
I formated the card when it was in the phone using FAT32, and the phone doesnt have problems with it (I didnt know it is able to handle FAT32)

but there is still one error, I cant read or write it in my card reader
I have a sundisk, and one from Sony, the one from Sundisk is from the w800i of my brother which works perfect in the card reader but mine, doesnt show up, and I cant access it...

I did mine and it changed the card to 1Gb using a FAT partition, but it won't let me transfer files over the original 512Mb capacity.

When I try it says there's a problem with the write to the F: drive and then the F: goes completely blank of all folders until I unplug and replug the cable in.

So yes and no!

Seems to work for me - removed active partition using WinXP disk management[1] and formatted to FAT & 926mb (Memory Card is a Sony branded 512mb model).

Card currently has about 500mb of stuff on it, and no problems so far with the phone slowing down or failing to read anything. One thing that did happen on my setup was that the speed of file transfer (PC to phone) slowed to a crawl - that 500mb took about nearly four hours to move. I may try formatting to FAT32 to see if that makes any difference.

[1] NB: The option to delete the partition didn't appear until I'd accessed some of the files on the Memory Stick. Weird, huh?

BUT there is something wrong, I dont know but it is, maybe its because of my phone or the Firmware which I have... I got R1N035

I can put as much music on it as I want, but when unplugged from the USB cable it automaticly delete's a lot of mp3's... I copied almost 550 mb on it and after unplugging it only showed me 250 or something...

very strange
anyone else who noticed something like that ?

do the files that are deleted in this process have long file names? I have the same problems with all my cards. try renaming them to something with 10 letters or less. for some reason i don't think the cards can handle long file names (this should also account for the strange icons and non deletable files appearing on phome)

Ha! Spoke too soon - tried a transfer today, and it failed - memory card disappeared from windows explorer. It seemed ok after the phone was removed from the data cable (no data missing other than the file that the transfer failed on).

It looks as though not all of that extra space is usable, at least not for me.
