Yes, the Siemens was the first with the color screen, but noting else... the T68 had all those features combined in one phone, a first at the time, specially at that size.

I used to love Siemens but they went off the boil after a while
It's just been on BBC Business News about  shifting to smart phones only next year. And the reporter went on to say that refused to comment on weather Sony is buying out Sony Ericsson or not

ok, before I move this to garbage as you're all not thinking clearly, obviously
I think Sony joined with Ericsson because they needed more technical knowledge of mobile phone systems whereas Ericsson joined Sony because they could see what sells form factor wise...
now... I feel that Sony have gained technical knowledge for mobile systems whereas Ericsson have remain generally outside of consumer products (being heavily involved in networks etc) and so Sony have the upper hand in terms of what consumers see as desirable as well as functional.
IMHO, it is definitely a good time for Sony to show ther prowess and take full control of their exposure in this mobile arena. Indeed, as with Apple, I suspect that a % of support will come from a fan base that Ericsson has long since lost but which Sony can re-attain due to their other market exposure, branding and popularity.
I mean... we all probably have other Sony products but almost none of us have other Ericsson products...

I have actually made peace with the impending takeover, I don't like it but I am willing to see what Sony will do. I am not optimistic, though, that Sony can pull it off alone. This joint-venture has turned around and it can only get better from here.
Only time will tell how a Sony controlled cellphone company will do.

Here's an interesting extract from Eldar in his latest Spillikins. I don't usually pay him any mind but this is what some of us have been saying about who is destroying/ destabilising who in the joint-venture. The outlook (from the article) is coincidentally the same as my prediction, ie, Sony is not going to make it on their own.

I do not work for Sony Ericsson.
But there was an all hands meeting in Malmö last night for the 2300 SE workers in the local area (mostly Lund).
Mr Nordberg did not say anything specific - you would not expect him to, since Sony and Ericsson are both listed companies on the stock market and to do so would contravene trading rules. (He said he knows nothing about what is happening - bullllllllllllllsssssssshhhhhhhhhiiiiiiiiiiittttttttttttt!!!!!!!!!!! )
But from what I have heard, he dropped so many hints about what is coming that everyone there now knows it is just a matter of time.
So get ready, very very soon indeed we will be discussing the new Sony phone range.

I think most members here do not understand the importance of the smartphone business for Sony not only in the short term but also long term. Sony's core TV and other businesses are losing money as the market for televisions and other expensive consumer durables has reached a point of no growth at least for a few years. And its not just Sony, LG as well as the world's largest TV maker Samsung too have been incurring losses in their TV divisions. Samsung is expected to report third straight quarter of losses in its TV business.
But the biggest reason Samsung is doing reasonably well is because of its smartphone business. 60% of Samsung's profits come from it handset business. So if Sony has to survive in the future and remain a top dog in the electronics industry it MUST succeed in the smartphone market and at the same time develop a large loyal fan base for sustained growth in the long term.
If Sony does not buyout then Sony's future is not very bright at all in the current economic scenario. So I believe this has a major role behind the "urgency" in closing the deal and paying almost 2 billion dollars when Sony isn't making any profits.
It will be an investment towards their long term survival. |

This is a good development I think, in terms of the products themselves. I think they will likely be faster to market than they have been under SE, the design language will stand out more and the brand value of the phone in your pocket will be considerably more attractive. Also, Sony phones will make noise in the USA that SE phones simply have not, do not and will not.
I can see them running a portfolio of smartphones running Android and Windows Mobile equally, and perhaps music oriented feature phones (Walkman).
My primary concern is that having a Sony phone will lock the user necessarily into the Sony ecosystem. This is my primary objection to iphone. Sure, it's a great phone but to get the max from it you need to use it with Apply software and other Apply hardware. I do not like this in principle, and I hope Sony do not think that this is a smart strategic move.
If this happens, then it becomes more and more obvious that the only phone to have is the Nexus Whatever.
