Update regarding the new iPhones with 4.x.x booloader.
I just unlocked mine to use ANY sim card. I used TurboSim and it works.
Rumor has it that Apple intentionally left this "door" open to let the phones be unlocked because it had been locked on previous firmware versions.
Photos can be supplied upon request.
Happy hacking.

I am still waiting to see what the dev team has got in mind. Turbosim seems to be the way now but I still hold belief that there will be a software unlocker in the works. Enjoy your "unlocked" iphone. |

Well if you consider just how fast the original iPhones were hacked and cracked and how long it is taking them to crack the latest base band i wouldn't say it is not looking good and is looking more like it won't be done IMO.

Someone that understands hashing and cypher keys. This is not a simple thing we are talking here. Apple closed the loop in this one boys and girls. AT&T probably got real pissed and Apple had to respond. There is a much more sophisticated checking sequence going on now. Stop being cheap, get TurboSim and unlock your phone if you want.
By the way, I will probably be selling my iPhone in a few weeks. It is more an iPod than phone. My N81 runs rings around it. Take away the UI and you have a 3 year old phone, or at best a SonyEricsson. Had to throw that in there.

You can jailbreak any iPhone but unlocking is another matter all together. If you do not mind sort of a minimalist in the way of telephony functions then the iPhone is for you. Great video, music, all in one package.

Can yo confirm a 3G phone in Japan? It would make more sense to launch in Europe where there is a larger 3G footprint. More uptake and sales. This the only thing Apple is concerned about now. Customer satisfaction is secondary. In the "so-called" 3G phone I would not be surprised to see pretty much the same hardware plus the addition of the 3G radio and same battery. 3G is not as big a hog as EGDE because with EDGE the phone is always switching between different modes. Apple sold a crap story and people fell for it.

NTT DoCoMo have confirmed that they are in talks with Apple about the iPhone. But the network runs on HSDPA so that means there would have to be a 3G version. |

This I knew. It also could mean that Apple will pawn off the same EDGE crap and say that they are doing us a favor by providing a power saving device. I am in Finland with an EDGE iPhone and for the most part it works okay. Sooooo a non-3G phone could be in the offing. Until Apple says they released a 3G version, all bets are off and it makes logical sense to assume it will be an EDGE device.

I prefer hsdpa I see no sense using an edge phone in the UK unfortunately I signed up to O2 and they don't really have a high speed network so I am stuck with Edge but hey each to their own. |

@dragon546,
Who wouldn't want HSDPA, but Apple opted for a much slower and older technology and had people actually believing it was better than 3G. I got an iPhone simply because I wanted one. No other reason. I knew what I was getting before I got it and have no complaints as I was not surprised.

Well I guess your one of the few Sapporo. I think most of the US were swepted up by the fact they would get a phone released first before the US and the Far East. By the time in reach Europe the novelty wore off lol |

@dragon546,
For sure dude. I get into daily argument with people, mainly from the US, that think the iPhone is ground breaking and a technological marvel. I simply hold up an N95, N82, even my N81 and then go spec by spec. My list is usually twice as long.
