P990 bugs and problems |

I have my P990i since Thursday. I bought it for € 649,- at Belcompany in Amsterdam (without being on any list).
My first impression is that I am somewhat disappointed by the overall quality. Rather large pixels on the screen (compared to a N80).
The phone crashes regularly (with that annoying comment that it restarted to improve memory usage... yeah right!)
Wifi and UMTS work fine. The browser is somewhat instable.
What I find highly annoying is the fact that the phone book shows contacts like 'Last name, first name'. Especially in a country where 50% of the surnames start with 'Van ...' Aaarggh! Does anybody know of a way to change this?
I hope new firmware will make this phone better rapidly, otherwise I'm afraid I will have to go back to my N80 (with pain in my heart)

got mine today, few bugs I've encountered so far
EVERY time I receive a message , it comes up with an error message and closes the messaging app. and it doesn't display the little envelope icon, so if I don't hear the message alert,I've got no idea I've received a message.
also,I am unable to change the background on flip open/closed.
and the phone has restarted a couple of times to "improve performance"

To anyone here. I have seen multiple issues here in this topic with several devices. A lot of these issues are not fixed in my P990i which has the R5A006 ROM version.
This is the latest ROM and the next ROM will come in October. I am addressing a lot of issues currently so if anyone of you have major issues feel free to tell me.
I cannot have issues like it crashes all the time. Only issues which can be reproduced!! So they occur and you can reproduce them.
My P990i is really stable. I am using it for several days now and I did not have one major problem. I also did not have any problems with the available memory. I also have a BST-34 battery which gives me at least two days of intensive usage. There are other issues which are smaller!
So if you have a problem mention it here with some background then SE can do something with it.

Looks like the slow processor cannnot handle it! Not a real bug, just slow performance. BT and Wifi together is quite some stuff for a device! I do not have the stereo headset but if anyone has the same feel free to address.
I already mentioned more than 20 issues to SE not all mentioned here.

@ MR -- Here is a list of bugs and issues that I have found with the phone that CAN be reproduced (at least on my phone):
1. In flip-closed mode, I hold down the "More" button to bring up the Task Manager. Then when I press the "Back" button to return to the standby screen, the "More" softkey remains highlighted.
2. If I start the Messaging application in flip-closed mode, the option to "Delete Message" disappears from the menu when I open the flip.
3. When syncing with Microsoft Outlook 2003, the phone creates the field "Mobile (w)" for all entries marked "Mobile" in Outlook instead of just adding the number to the "Mobile" field within the phone.
4. When editing or adding a contact phone number in the Contacts application, the phone automatically formats the number to all digits [example 5555555555]. It should allow the number to be shown in area code format [example (555) 555-5555].
5. When adding a picture to a contact, the zoom steps are too large for the images. The increments for zoom should be reduced.
6. When I add a picture in "Portrait" format to an MMS, the phone automatically formats the picture to a "Landscape" view. The same occurs when attaching a picture to an e-mail.
7. If I record a video with the phone, the audio does not match up with the video.
8. Animated .gif images do not work as wallpaper backgrounds as they did with the P910.
9. When changing the zoom level within applications (such as Contacts or Messages), only the actual text size changes rather than freeing up more screen space by shrinking selectable options.
10. If I start the phone in flip-closed mode, the text in the Task Manager application is bold in flip-open mode. If I start the phone in flip-open mode, the text is normal. The text should remain normal whether starting in flip-closed or flip-open mode.
11. There does not appear to be a method of changing the homepage within the Web application. Currently, the first bookmark seems to designate the homepage. There should either be a menu to select a homepage, or there should be a way to re-order the bookmarks.
12. If I record a message in the Sound Recorder application, the time of creation is incorrect when viewing it in the File Manager application. For example, I recorded a message at 7:37 pm, but it shows up as being recorded at 11:35 pm. There also seems to be a strange internal time issue with other files. Some of the system images and sounds on the phone appear to have been created in the year 2083!
13. There does not seem to be a way to turn of the Password Manager within the Web application so that it does not ask you to remember each password. Is there a menu to turn it off somewhere or is that not an option? If not, it should be.
14. The overall volume level seems to be low for some reason. Ring volume and message alerts both sound lower than average, even with volume levels turned up. Also, the volume when recording video is barely audible on playback.
15. In flip-open mode, the Today/Activity menu suffers from problems. By default, I am able to scroll through the options of "Recent Missed Calls," "Unread Messages," "Appointments," and "Tasks." If I select one of these with the jog dial or the stylus, the selection indicator moves to the upper portion of the screen to allow me to scroll through the items in each category. But once this is done, I can no longer return to the lower portion to scroll. The application titles (Missed Calls, Tasks, etc.) also start to overlap when selecting with the stylus. This is difficult to explain, so just try selecting one of the categories witht the jog dial, and I think you will see the problem here.
16. In the Camera application, it would be helpful if there was a hardware key to toggle the flash on/off.
17. In flip-closed mode, when I receive an MMS and press "More," then "Media Files," the phone shows the media files within the message. When I choose "Open" to view an image, the phone asks me to "Open Flip To Continue," but when I do so, the phone always just shows a white screen (basically, it crashes). I have to restart to continue.
18. Startup time is VERY long. Hopefully this time can be decreased with updates.
19. There should be more options of shortcuts to add to the flip-closed mode Shortcut application.
20. Camera image thumbnails are very pixelated and blurry in both the Picture Gallery and File Manager applications.
Okay, that's all I can think of and test for now. Hopefully many of these things can be fixed in the next firmware update. I know other people have experienced many of these problems and others, so if you think of another, maybe just start adding it to this list with 21 as the next number (then 22, 23, etc.). That way we won't have repeats, and can have an organized list. Happy bug hunting to all!

Hello There.. This is my first post in this forum. Im from Kuwait, i've just bought myself a new P990i.. its been 2 days and the phone crashed once yet. I just upgraded to the latest firmware, its got a little bit faster.. but whats with the bold font in the Task-Manager..? and is there anyway to change the fontsize of the Messaging of while the flip is closed?..
Anyways.. the biggest problem i see in the phone is the WiFi.. It just won't work, i've tried everything!.. I have a shared internet connection on my AirPort, on my MacBook.. I can connect to the MacBook and use the internet with no problems using my Toshiba laptop.. When i connect using my P990i, it says connected, but when i open the Web Browser, it immediately says 'Cannot locate.....'.. has anyone experienced something like this? or anyone know any possible cure!?.. Thanks. |

I have not encountered that, but other similair problems when starting an SMS with flip closed and then changed my mind and wanted to write an MMS instead. I wanted to copy the text and paste it into an MMS. I know I can copy the text directly with flip closed, but I didn't this time. I opened the flip and selected all the text. Then I tried to find a cut or copy in the menu, but I couldn't find it. That time I had to rewrite the message. After some more testing I found out that I had to select the To-field first. It was enough to use the scroll wheel to just "touch" the To-field. And when back in the body again the options to cut and/or copy was there in the menu.
By the way, why do I have to select SMS or MMS before I write it? Samsung has a really nice solution for this. Just write the message and as soon as you add multimedia to it, it becomes an MMS. If you for some reason want to send it as MMS even though it contains only text, it's easily changable within a menu before sending. At least the SHG-ZV40 worked like that.
Also if you have the flip closed and copied some text. Then when you start a new MMS and want to paste that text into it, the natural way for me would be inserting a text field first. But if you do that, there is no way pasing the text into it. This is possible with flip open, but not when it's closed. I later noticed that there is a paste option at the very bottom of the menu shown at first when creating a new MMS.

Not only that. If you immediately press the "del" key after exiting the entry field after entering a number containing anything else but numbers the contacts application will end with an error code.

Finally someone else but me having this problem. Very annoying and makes video recording almost useless.

Indeed. Makes you wonder what use the zoom really has.

I have also noticed this time issue. When playing a video clip, the right time of recording is displaued, but when looking at the properties through the file manager, the time is two hours earlier than the recording took place.
I also noticed that if I start recording a voice memo and press stop and then press the record button again, the size of the file increases, but the length in time does not. When I tried that now, the phone froze when pressing stop for the second time.

I agree. There should be an option to turn it off.

The playback volume when playing through the phone's speaker is a bit low. But when listening through earphones I think it's good enough. At least in my phone. But the volume when recording video is way to low. Perhaps there is a thought by that, considering the bad synchronisation.

I tried that now with an MMS containing a short video clip. Indeed I got a plain white screen when opening the flip. The clip was played though (I could hear the sound), but the screen stayed white. After writing this I was about to restart the phone, but then suddenly it went back to normal. I would estimate the time in "white screen mode" to about two minutes.

As long as the phone doesn't need to be restarted a couple of times a day I could live with it. But as it is now... Well...

I have, for every recording. Sometimes the delay between sound and image is as much as a few seconds. |

2. Not a bug, difference in modus perspective. In FO you need to open the message and delete it. That is something strange. I would say that you cannot delete multiple messages in the Messaging program.
3. Check the P910i. Something UIQ has be doing from the beginning on. It also does not sync the "Other" field from Outlook!
5. I already addressed that.
7. Need to check that!
12. I do have that issue
14. I do not have that issue. Sound volume is ok
16. As designed......
18. Smartphones are always low on start up speed.
20. As designed......
I will test more the upcoming days and also look at some issues addressed here.
