@Leviath

I should point out that eating meat isn't a strict requirmeent of Buddhism, well not unless one is a monk I suppose.

Having said that, it was His Holiness the Dalai Lama himself who said recently that if one finds the rules and intricacies of Buddhism too difficult one should say "f**k it!". Sound advice if you ask me.

I should point out that human beings have incisor teeth, nature clearly intends for us to consume meat. There is also the point to be made that the healthiest diet for a human being is a mixture of meant and non-meat foodstuffs.

It is natural to kill other animals for food, there is nothing evil in that. One can choose to eat meat or not, but to castigate others as being morally wrong for eating meat is a tad extreme in my view.

Also, if you read your bible, it says, when Noah came out of the ark, he prayed to God for some food, and God caused a ram to get its horns entangled in a bush, and God said "eat that, chum!" Therefore, religion (or christianity, rather) is condoning the eating of meat.

Well said in the above 2 posts.

The Holy scriptures do not forbid us to eat meat. When the Holy Prophet (pbuh) said "do not be cruel to animals" it does not mean you cannot eat them after they have been sacrifised.

Do not be cruel to animals has many meanings: Feed the animals if they are hungry, if they have no home, give them shelter, if they are injured, help them recover. and lots more ways.

Verse 1 and 4 from Chapter 5 states:

Lawful unto you for food are all four-footed animals, with the exceptions named: But animals of the chase are forbidden while ye are in the sacred precincts or in pilgrim garb: for Allah doth command according to His will and plan.

Forbidden to you for food are: dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which hath been invoked the name of other than Allah. that which hath been killed by strangling, or by a violent blow, or by a headlong fall, or by being gored to death; that which hath been partly eaten by a wild animal; unless ye are able to slaughter it in due form; that which is sacrificed on stone altars; forbidden also is the division of meat by raffling with arrows: that is impiety. This day have those who reject faith given up all hope of your religion: yet fear them not but fear Me. This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion. But if any is forced by hunger, with no inclination to transgression, Allah is indeed Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.

I've just had a tasty chicken.

i wasn't cruel, i said "alhamdulillah" (all praise is due to allah) whilst i had my lunch. He gave me the food and i ate it.

@solidsingh, due you drink milk? That milk comes from a cow that is caused a lot of pain when the milk is taken out.

we have sharp teeth not only to eat meat but to eat veg too.

God gives us all these varieties, so why not use them?

Verse 5-6 Chapter 5 from The Glorious Quran states:

They ask thee what is lawful to them as food. Say: lawful unto you are all things good and pure: and what ye have taught your trained hunting animals to catch in the manner directed to you by Allah. eat what they catch for you, but pronounce the name of Allah over it: and fear Allah. for Allah is swift in taking account.

This day are all things good and pure made lawful unto you. The food of the People of the Book is lawful unto you and yours is lawful unto them. Lawful unto you in marriage are not only chaste women who are believers, but chaste women among the People of the Book, revealed before your time,- when ye give them their due dowers, and desire chastity, not lewdness, nor secret intrigues if any one rejects faith, fruitless is his work, and in the Hereafter he will be in the ranks of those who have lost all spiritual good.

To the above 2 posts.

People eat them both.
But unless were discussing how your religion specifies not doing something (like not eating meat, not drinking, not allowing The Man to get you) then this is all completely off topic.

@solid:
I do believe that when a text mentions not being cruel to animals they would be referring to not torturing the animal, or being cruel and tormenting them.

Like the fact or not, but slaughter houses don't sit there being cruel to animals, but they do kill them. Neither do the animals that are raised on farms exactly have a hard life. It may be cruel to you to have the animal killed so that it an provide food, but I'll bet its pretty quick for the animal.

So to bring this all in line, whose religions to specify no meat, no animal, no drink, etc?
