Sorry for the delay everyone
@J-J I haven't forgotten you, still don't have the answer yet (googling required!)
@Nanu
It usually means that the sound driver either didn't install properly or isn't compatible with vista. Best have a look at the manufacturers website or google for your particular sound device or motherboard. My soundblaster card has never worked properly with vista, creative still haven't sorted it out yet
@tk338
With it being a laptop, it's more likely that you have one hard drive split into two partitions. What you need to do first is determine which partition has windows installed on it. This is usually labeled within windows as the C: drive.
Next, you need to check the size of the other (non windows) partition, and indeed what you have saved on it. If it's large enough for linux (say, 10Gb or more realistically) and there's nothing important saved on it, you can simply switch the laptop off, put in your linux disk, start the computer, boot from the linux install disk and follow the install instructions, much like windows.
Just make sure that you select the correct partition to install to when asked, or you'll wipe your windows installation, all applications, personal data etc. This is why it's a good idea to note the exact sizes of each partition, so you can be sure to get the right one!
If both partition sizes are the same, or the other partition is not big enough, you can use a partitioning application like partition magic to change or create partitions to your liking first.

Hi Cyco,
I'd figured that out whilst waiting for you! pfft!
Now it just seems a little low even though the volume is up full on the PC any ideas as to why it may be so low?

Cyco my friend.
I have just built up a PC from spares for my sister to use since she dropped her laptop.
Anyway all is good got XP on it etc all going good.
there was one problem though, no sound driver was installed. My mate said that the Realtek AC97 codec would pretty much go with anything so i tried that. Upon installation the PC got a BSOD for about a millisecond, and restarted.
When the PC would usually show the windows XP logo and have the 3 or 4 running bars going round underneath it (the bootup screen) nothing happened. It just stayed blank, nothing loaded up or showed any signs of life.
I rebooted 3 or 4 times when i realised nothing was going to happen so since the PC had nothing installed on it i went to repair XP using the XP CD. When doing this i got upto the screen when it usally asks what keyboard layout you want and the country you are in when it asked me whether i wanted to install the Realtek Drivers, which i selected yes and in under a second i got another BSOD and the PC rebooted again, with the same symptoms.
I am just off to try a fresh install, any ideas why this was happening?
BTW i got the Drivers from www.download.com which i thought irradicates the idea of a virus in the programme.
Thanks
Danny

It's the wrong driver!
Realtec AC 97 refers only to the codec itself, there are tons of different realtec ac 97 drivers, pretty much one for each individual type of realtec audio chip.
What you need to do is identify the exact chip that your motherboard is using. You can do this by looking at the mobo and googling either the motherboard make and model number or, if it's not printed on the board, the model and serial numbers that are printed on the south bridge and audio chip itself. The audio chip is usually pretty small, often located near the PCI slots and will have the realtec symbol printed on it.
What you need to know via google is the exact chipset and audio system that the board is using. You should be able to get the driver from www.driverguide.com

LoL i'll try it cyco.
Im having mass problems setting up ICS on vista atm for my Xbox 360.
Know anything about this?
Everything is set to automatic and the connection is set to shared but in network connections it says 'Unidentyfied network' Under the lan port i am using for the Xbox.
Any ideas for that?

I'm connecting a hard drive via USB bit it is showing up as "local disk" and when attempting to access it says "the parameter is incorrect".
The housing I am using is fine because I have another external drive which works fine.
any clues for this one please?

Is the HD formatted? Have you used it before?

yeah, it was working perfectly in the desktop pc that it was previously in, which we just trashed as it was 5 years old and not worth upgrading
I've got chkdisk /f running on it now with a very big hope it can fix whatever is the problem

Exactly what I would have suggested!
Did it work?

yes, thanks, it fixed quite a few things which surprised me as chkdsk has almost never done anything except find lost files. But this time it did alot of stuff I haven't even heard of.
After that the disk was accesible and I got 95% of the stuff of it.
I plan to low level reformat it this w/e and see how many bad blocks are found and then decide if its worth the risk of using it it further.
Its 400gb and so quite alot to lose though I already have a couple of 500gb drives anyway as they're getting very cheap now. (around £70-£80 for 500gb)
