I absolutely love Samsung and all my phones going back to 2010 have been Samsungs but they need patents which are useful to us end users. When was the last time anyone really appreciated Smart Scroll, Smart Pause or Smart Stay? Mind you, I love Samsung but..............

Posted by hihihans
I don't care who has the patents, as long as they are all available to me.

Posted by tesndro353
Though I hope they'd make less fragile cellphones. All my previous Samsung phones suffered from me Lol.

Posted by maiaramdan
honestly

it's not by number
it's by how useful and how important these patents are

Posted by Tsepz_GP
To think about 5years ago, Samsung was the last manufacturer I'd want to go with, I had huge respect for their manufacturing prowess and the incredible amount of unique HW found in their phones but I was prepared to get a Htc, Sony or stay with Nokia, lol, thank goodness I had no choice but to get a Galaxy S2 when the Htc Sensation XE didn't make it to stores down here.

Anyway, what they need is patents that are relevant and have a lot of weight to them.

There's no point in having countless patents that may never go into use when you're being sued by a whole lot of patent trolls who want a piece of your success.

Not a surprise to me since their amongst, if not THE, oldest phone manufacturer in the world today.
Yes kids I said PHONE not just SmartPhones.

Hmmm.

So you didn't see evolution since 10yrs ago?
CandyBar Phones,
Flip Phones (mimicing Motorola's prize possession)
blazed the original trail for CandyBar Slider phones (about 4yrs before the chocolate ... their S60 phone, the only one in existence, to have been a candybar slider - I still love that device)!
S60 phones - alway smore powerful yet getting the nod-shaft by Nokia not able to use their latest S60 API's or their Beta apps.
Innovation in LCD/AMOLED screen technology was about 3yrs before Android 1.0 began life.
Major efficient manufacturer vs all competitors, even the great OEM HTC back in the day (HTC began life making smartphones for Vodafone, Orange, Virgin, and even Verizon.

I saw the evolution, thats why I had so much respect for them

I watched them from the days of the Samsung D410 with its incredible 256,144 colour display back in 2003 and VGA Camera, going on to the D500 slider that became so popular , then came the D600 around the same time as the SE W800 Walkman, the D900 with its decent 3MP Camera. I remember their Super slim Ultra series, with slim bar, slider and flip phones made to go against Moto's RAZR series.
I remember their legendary WM Smartphone, the I900 Omnia, along with the Optical Zoom enabled Symbian G810 and I will never forget the 1st Samsung smartphone I truly wished I could have, the Symbian S60 driven I8510 Innov8, it was a Nokia N95 on steroids, such a pity it never saw the same kind of success. We then had the Symbian S60v5 I8910 Omnia HD, the best S60v5 phone at the time, it had better internal HW than both the Nokia N97 and SE Satio at the time.

The above is the reason why I think people who say "Samsung are only successful because of Android" are misinformed idiots, as Samsung swiftly climbed up ranks long before Android, by the time Android arrived Samsung were already knocking on Nokia's door.

yes...and they have the largest numbers of cellphones made in plastic to

But that plastic dents and scratches less than metal and is well put together and is pretty more durable than you realise

That depends on which type of metal the phone is made from. If you compare plastic and the steel on the iPhone 4 and 4s then that is definitely wrong. But the aluminium used in the iPhone 5 and 5s is another matter. I got scratches on my previous iPhone 5 simply from inserting and removing it from a plastic cover. With my current iPhone, the 5s, I make sure to wipe and blow any dust from it before putting it inside a cover.

My wife has one of those entry level Samsung Galaxy phones. She has had it for about a year now. She throws it in her handbag together with keys, coins and what have you. And there is not one scratch on the phone.

Exactly.

The 5 and 5S are prone to scratching and denting easily, I'm more than happy with plastic, it's durable, flexible, doesnt dent easily and is light weight, Samsung must stick to it, IMO, a mix of mostly polycarbonate and steel edging would be fine, I don't want aluminum.

Had my GS4 over a year now, I use it in and out of a case constantly and the plastic is still fine a year later.

As for the iPhone5C, I haven't cared enough to even try it, probably never will.

i have both 5s and 5c......and i can easily say that 5c plastic is freaking awesome....its like night & day compared to Samsung S4 for example.

....aluminium is both hard and soft metal....it handle drops very good without cracking

though......i use a super thin (1mm) back cover on my 5s just because i want it to look stunning on the backside.

Is the 5C's plastic as flexible as the S4's back cover? In other words can it handle being bent extremely without snapping? Would be interesting to see if anyone has tried that with the 5C's shell.

Trying to bend an iPhone 5c? That's called destructive testing...

I meant the shell when the phone is disassembled.

Posted by plankgatan
IF you bend a 5c. I give you My 5c for free. That's for sure.

Ps. It definitive not crack if you bend it.

Posted by Tsepz_GP
No thank you, the 5C for me would be going backwards and would probably gather dust along with my Galaxy S2 and the iPhone4S we've got lying around somewhere here.

I'd like proof of the iPhone 5C plastic shell being bent, you've got me really interested now as that would give us an idea of how durable the 5C's plastic cover is, here's a pic of my GS4 back cover:

Samsung's plastic from my experience has been better and more durable than what people think or as on here presume. Aluminum scratches easily

Posted by plankgatan
Samsung s4 plastic material is horrible...........feels ultra cheap

samsung s5 feels a bit better but still made in thin, cheap plastic

no offend to all Samsung lovers (f**kers.. )

Posted by Tsepz_GP
So you couldn't prove it, thanks for confirming what I thought.

Apologies to all for going off topic.

Posted by plankgatan
prove what ??? are you that naive.....

of course Samsung flying out millions of cellphones.....not that hard when most of them are made in cheap plastic

.......................................................................
as Samsung Product Designer Dong Hun Kim say about s5:
"We'd prefer to focus on the software improvements."

thats just a load of crap.........every other cellphone company does not focus on the software ??

nice lying,,,,Hun Kim. (its about money...and Samsung didnt want to spend more money on S5)

Not sure what it proves when you show that the battery cover can bend.

To me a flexible battery cover only shows that the plastic material is different - not better - than the kind used in Nokia's Lumia phones and the iPhone 5c.

Metal or aluminum scuffs and scratches easily plastic surgery is less prone to this and less lightly to show scuff marks. And plastic also is alot more durable than many realise. I've not had any Samsung phone crack or have creaky build except the Note 2 which the back cover creaked like an old ship. Bit the majority nope
