Samsung Galaxy S4 announced

Posted by laffen
Samsung today announced the Galaxy S4. A 5-inch Android smartphone with LTE, 1.9 GHz quad-core CPU or 1.6 GHz octa-core processor.

Samsung Galaxy S 4 announced

We all knew that Samsung would unveil the Galaxy S 4 at the Unpacking event taking place this evening. We have read countless rumours, photo leaks and even video reviews of this new flagship model from Samsung.

Most of the specifications we published two weeks ago turned out to be the real thing. The Galaxy S4 will be available in at least two version. One with a quad-core processor clocked at 1.9 GHZ and one version with a octa-core processor clocked at 1.6 GHz. The display is 5-inch Super AMOLED and internal storage is 16, 32 or 64 GB. The Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean powered device has 2 GB of RAM. It will record Full HD 1080p videos. Still photos are captured with the 13 megapixel main camera, or the 2.1 megapixel front camera.

One interesting thing for the business and enterprise uses is the Knox security feature. Knox separates the phone in a personal space and a work space. A company can for example sync all data on the work space and at the same time have no access to the personal space.

Some of the new features are: Smart pause - video pausing when eyes are move away from the screen. S health - calorie counter. New sensors: temperature and humidity in addition to the older Accelerometer, RGB  light, digital compass, proximity, gyro and barometer. S-translator text-to-speech and speech-to-text from and to over 6 languages. Camera has an eraser function which will remove unwanted objects from a photo. The dual shot will create pictures by adding a thumbnail photo captured by the front camera to the larger photo captured with the main camera.

Samsung Galaxy S4 hands-on

This is exactly what I mean. The s4 is good and all, but it's not what the s2 was vs all the other smartphones. It's too early to say, because it's obvious the note series is Samsung's priority in terms of tech now, but Samsung are running out of ideas.

It seems Samsung even wants to imitate Apple with lame upgrades!

This phone couldn't be of a lamer upgrade than this!
The whole show was extremely annoying with all that dancing and BS that went on and on, and all just to announce a minimal incremental upgrade hardware=wise, and a bunch of gimmicky software features at best!

Ridiculous to say the least.
To me, the Xperia Z is the best Droid for this year! And it's not that good given this 2013 we're in and some new innovations were expected..

Completely agree.

Just like last year, so many hopeful rumours - just this year it's an even bigger let-down.

OK things i like are the beautiful screen looks way better than the GS3 & Note 2. Camera features are great too with cool things you can do with it. But apart from that hate the design again and waving your hand up and down the display to scroll. Hmmm you'd look a bit silly in public I cannot imagine ever using that feature and it looked a little awkward too. I just prefer to use the touch screen. Sometimes Samsung phones try to do too much at once alot of battery draining gimmicks. Nice things about it but when i seen it first time on a video it didn't make my jaw drop. The dual video recording LG already did that in the G Pro

The presentation was awful
The only real difference is the screen, same old boring design...
I'll be looking more closely at the HTC One

And im so happy I just bought the Note 2! Best device ever! Even the S4 seems a lame copy....

Posted by Tsepz_GP
It's a handsome thing looks less feminine than the S3 whilest keeping the predecessor's great ergonomics.

Great work by Samsung, it manages to bring a huge 5inch display, great capacity 2600mAh battery, bigger camera sensor and so on yet STILL manages to be smaller and lighter than the GS3:

Incredible stuff.

Icing on the cake? As usual with Samsung, it comes with the very latest, Android4.2.2 out-the-box.

GSMArena also seems thoroughly impressed

Seems Samsung have done it again, ....Z and One what?

Put all the Samsung phones next each other and people will say, which one is which

Posted by echo.shane
So after reading the specs of the highly anticipating Galaxy s4 i was like "THAT'S ALL?" But what else can i say other than that is the result of having to rely on other companies for innovation. I can believe Samsung ran out of ideas. What an embarrassment.

Posted by Tsepz_GP
Sean, I was a bit thrown off when the GS3, Note2 and GS4 were put next to each other for a second, but I noticed the S4 is a bit more narrow.

I'm so glad they have made it lighter its going to be great to have a 5inch device that is so lite, thin and narrower than most 5inch phones, THAT is how Samsung is going to win over customers, this will probably be the most palm friendly phone with a screen at over 4.5inchs.

Galaxy S4 will hit 327 carriers in 155 countries, rollout starts in April

Few companies can do it like Samsung, which definitely possesses the capacity. The latest Samsung flagship will launch at the end of April and go on to hit 327 carriers in 155 countries.

Now Samsung is just showing off! Some OEMs haven't even got half that many countries at release, Samsung have their distribution game on lock!

Handsome? Inspired by a pebble like the s3? Extremely bland and uninspiring imho. Nothing on the XZ or the One, and I dont even like the look of the One that much.

You talk as if a bigger camera sensor, battery and screen weigh kg's Obviously with new tech, and keeping the plastic body, allows for a lighter weight.

4.2.2 for a phone launching late April is to be expected. Not from Samsung, but all manufacturers. If the XZ doesnt have the update by then, well, you win this round

GSMArena was also impressed with the iPhone 5 and other iterations before it, but, I wasnt. Whats your point?

Moving on, sure this has a couple better hardware components, but, is it really that much more 'powerful' XZ/HTC One. I dont know what people do with their phones but all 3 are very capable handsets and will handle most tasks thrown at them. The software features Samsung are now introducing, well, I wont comment further on them. Doesnt interest me in the least.

What is the obsession with the ergonomics? It's as if people think ergonomics is the only reason to get a phone. Besides, I think the Xperia T has better ergonomics than the s3.

And anyone that says that the s4 wins in ergonomics is just crazy. The ZL has that one on lock, sorry. No manufacturer will be able to get close before next year.

Sony phones don't really look alike, it's just that the wallpaper is the same - details finer than that are distinguishably different. With Samsung...What finer details?

Now can a few more people see what I was talking about before the announcement when I was saying Samsung was going downhill?

Posted by Bonovox
I thought they might have put in a battery as large as the Note 2 though. It's not that much larger than the HTC One battery. For me i don't get the fascination with skinny thin phones. I would rather allow for bigger battery but obviously not making the phone too fat

Posted by Tsepz_GP
Yep, personally hoped for a 3000mAh battery, the GS3 has an extended 3000mAh battery pack by Samsung and it doesn't make it at all much thicker.
Guess the gigantic batteries shall be found in the Note series.

NOW, what I want to know is what DAC is in this beast??? Please be Wolfson again, its what makes the S3 a great phone for audiophiles!

Can't wait to see which of its new SW features us GS3/Note2 users will get in 4.2 the updated Nature UX looks great, glad they got rid of the black notification bar.

WRT the new features eating battery, if they have done as great a job in making them effecient as they did in the ones in GS3 and Note2 then it'll be fine, I tend to forget I have them on on my GS3 until they kick in e.g. when smart rotation or smart stay kick in.

EDIT: How interesting that Samsung have thrown in a IR Blaster whilest one of its competitors did so in one flagship but not the other and also a Cinemagraph type app.

The Exynos version also offers LTE, just like the i9305 GS3, glad we're getting that version instead of the Qualcomm one

Sammy is the one pushing technology forward with all the new sw features, Smart-Stay, new sensors like temperatur and humidity, RGB light, digital compass, proximity, gyro and barometer. Health service (supports sensors to measure blood pressure, blood sugar and more). Camera erase function and add a photo taken by the front camera and more........ A lot of people might find these new features insignificant but a few years back the same people wondered why do we need GPS on a phone.....

To me this phone looks great and I am sure it will be a pleasure to use. My next one

Some would argue against that. Modding community definitely favours the Qualcomm chips.

Posted by Tsepz_GP
I'm not into modding and I no longer do custom ROMs as Samsung's TouchWiz these days tends to offer a lot more than any custom ROM and stock Android. I was once tempted to try Slim Bean but then realised I'd lose a number of valuable functions like Multi-view mulititasking, multi item clipboard, S Memo + S Planner widgets, Reject list, etc...and the insane stability of TouchWiz, its just so robust.

Exynos chips are also always more powerful, especially when it comes to GPU, and more effecient than the Qualcomm chips, if Samsung had switched completely to Qualcomm I'd probably start looking into the next iPhone.

Judging by the samples so far, the camera is really good on SIV. It's so much crisper than what Z can offer... And I wouldn't be surprised if the camera sensor in SIV was produced by Sony, to make the irony even better

It's a damn shame, they are clearly feeling very threatened. Samsung's marketing budget alone will probably be more than HTC's earnings for the year, that on its own will have them worried, same with Sony, whom I wouldn't be surprised if they do the same, this is what comes with being a dominant player these days, loads of critics, loyal fans and a whole lot of hate form competitors.

If Samsung were able to handle a $1billion loss (which has now been cut by 450mill) to Apple, they can handle a few jealous OEMs who are about half their size. I like how LG went about the GS4 announcement, they basically did to Samsung what Samsung had done to Apple around the iPhone5 launch very nice yet smart at the same time.

Well,now Samsung isn't ahead,techwise,anymore.
Same cheap look, more gimmicks called "future functions" and same amoled sh*t.

perhaps Samsung has plans for an SIV based Galaxy Camera, now that's what I'd call innovation

Though seriously S4 needs a fresher design

Posted by Ranjith
To some one unbiased as me towards SXZ and GS4 the S4 doesnt stand out so special against Z.a better built would have sealed it but the Xperias are slightly more tough, which i need.but nice little features by Samsung with the software's.

It fun to watch how the blind Sony fans are making desperate attempts to bash the new S4 in favor of their ugly, buggy and expensive Z... I'm actually sorry for them and their pitiful attempts to distort the truth. They still call Samsung a copy-cat company, which clearly shows they're few years behind, just like their beloved Sony... The design of the S4 may not be the best ( 2011 Xperias are doubtlessly the best for that matter ), but it's still much better and more comfortable when hold in hand than Sony's black blank bricks. When Sony comes with something with Arc's style and class, then you'll have the right to bash other flagships. Furthermore you're still waiting for the 4.1 update, don't forget that!

You pathetic troll.

Look at SGS1 /GS2 and Galaxy tab and Iphone/Ipad series and you will notice they copied designs from Apple.
Speaking about technology, those are many things that Samsung steal other technology.

Okay let us Sony fanboys not utter a word. Let's see what all the major tech sites have to say about S4, shall we?

Fortune Magazine -

"Samsung's lack of power designing the core software that runs on its flagship mobile device makes it tough to celebrate the launch of the S4 -- even if it can do a few new things. Copying hardware is not the game anymore; rather, it is more about who can build a long-standing, sticky relationship with customers after that initial sale is made. Apple and Google are basically the only two players in this new war -- one in which Samsung, for the time being, can't even participate."

ZDNet -

"While Galaxy fans will likely be happy that the S4 has taken design cues from the S3, it could begin to wear thin if Samsung doesn't break the mould eventually. While this could seem of little concern at the launch of another flagship handset and new addition to Samsung's stables, the overall design choices taken for the S4 could illustrate a growing trend, and growing problem, for smartphone makers."

All Things D -

"Some of [the] upgrades in the Galaxy S4 feel incremental, or are simply borrowed from other Samsung smartphones. But the Korean electronics giant’s baby steps and increasingly desirable flagship phones are beginning to set it apart in the high-end smartphone market."

The Verge -

"mostly small improvements, though, and in some ways the Galaxy S4 feels like an upgrade designed less for people who own the previous generation and more for those looking for a first smartphone, or upgrading from a two-year-old device. (Call it the Galaxy S IIIS.)"

Gizmodo -

"There has been a ton of hype and build-up to this device, and ultimately, it left us feeling cold. The S IV feels uninspired. There are small spec bumps from the previous generation and there’s a ton of software which will largely sit unused. There’s just no wow-factor here."

Comparing it with the HTC One they took with them to the event, they said: "When you pick up the One, you feel like you’re holding something amazing, both in the build and the screen. When you pick up the S IV, you feel like you’re holding an S III with a few extra bells and whistles."

Engadget -

"You say you want a revolution? Too bad, because this Galaxy smartphone update is just that... an update. Samsung's newly unveiled Galaxy S 4 is an incremental step up, an evolution less "inspired by nature" and more by last year's GS III."

I enjoied reading that, what it says is that the GS4's ONLY flaw is the way it looks and not that it looks bad BUT that it looks like the S3, that is its only downer.

I can see what Samsung are trying to do here, they are indeed wanting to create a loyal following and brand familiarity by not going to far from the S3 design, they also know that many S3 users signed 2year deals, so the S4 is certainly about capturing new comers who missed the S3.

On top of all that, the GS3 AND NOTE2 will receive all the Hardware independent features such as Smart pause and scrolling in future updates, therefore keeping us current users happy, as they did with GS2 and Note users, they are taking a tip from Apple's book and trying to strike a balance between keeping current users happy and getting new ones.

Samsung have an excellent strategy in hand here, those who want a pretty phone can always get a Z or a One, but they are not going to be guaranteed regular updates nor a robust UI that will be updated over 24months.

I think its safe to say us GS3 and Note2 users are guaranteed Android5.0, and next year when the GS5 lands, the GS4 and Note3 users will get those next 2 major OS updates to.

Before I start, I want to say I have nothing against Samsung. I have loved the fact they pulled lot of people and showed what Android is capable of.

I wasn't really expecting much from S4 and looking at all other Samsung smartphones, they all now look the same. So it's a no surprise that S4 also looks like a standard Samsung phone but that's Samsung, you liking it or not it's a personal choice. Just like iOS UI has been the same from last so many years.

But XZ is the best out of all top end smartphones. It's got looks, S4 Pro chip does it job very well and so does quad-core, water/dust resistant, good camera, clean & neat UI (according to me it's the best UI but it's again very personal).

S4 is a very good device and it's very well placed to be compared with XZ. It's not like oh this is a shitty device, for sure it's not but there's nothing revolutionary. It's just another top end android smartphone.

I see it this way, there's LG Optimus G Pro, HTC One, Samsung Galaxy S4 & Sony Xperia Z
Buy whichever you like, these are top end Android smartphones and they're very much the same and does the same job

It's time to start denigrating south korean soap, just like sammy boys did on SXZ thread.
A very nice phone, with very good specs, more bells and whistles that fails to impress.
Side by side with Xperia ZL or Z,GS4 looks like the "phone of yesteryear".
Boring, ugly and... boring. (just to repeat,as Samsung did)

To be honest ... it's a "Roll-Out" so I would not agree about distribution game being on lock. End of April was stated officially not "in April" and no specific date for ANY carrier - same that was done by BlackBerry. When you launch with a specific date THAT my friend is distribution on LOCK. Canadian providers get theres in Q2 which is May; USA also.

I'm just not at all impressed. So many software features that really seem like gimicks; sure some will use the features, others will be like ho-hum. It almost seems Samsung is reaching to encompass all these software features from competitors because the hardware is just a slight bump. Should they promote this as a PC replacement with BT keyboard+mouse with WiDirect to TV then I'd be very impressed. Moreover I'll be VERY skeptical of the Sales numbers - I suspect many Note II users will sell theirs and jump tot he SGS4.

Continuing the tradition of ripping off other companies ideas shamelessly. The feature to take photos from front and rear cam is taken from LG, most of the other features are copied from Htc One.

IR blaster copied from Xperia ZL.

What else remains ? Small time Google play store developers that were ripped off ?

What a shame really.

Also Samsung just gave Xperia Z a free run until April end- May in most markets. GS4 will rule for 1-2 months and then get butchered into a million pieces by One Sony

Camera is really good http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s_4-review-907p3.php#

Sony sensor? If yes, Sony go kill yourself!

This is a great job from Sammy fitting more features and better specs into a more compact device The design may not be for everyone, so what, neither was the design of the S III still it became a huge success. You can't win 'em all and some of the new sw features may be gimmicks but they will lead to something new like innovations always do

@Randomuser Now I'll buy straight in December. Till then I'm going to enjoy XZ.

@Rikken S4 is great device. Doesn't matter if it does not have a compelling design. But now S4 is just any other smartphone. We expected some great innovation and that's what the buzz was all about. A smartphone above par but that's not the case. May be next time.

Hmmm... this feels like deja vu. It takes me back to when Nokia would come up with great phones until they ran out of ideas.

Could we see a 'new' player coming to the fore to topple Samsung next year?

This is an okay phone, still better than anything available, but by just a whisker.

Yes, Sony.

With Samsung's softwares and chips it would be nice to see on top of this a beautifully styled bit of kit to make me say wow i want that but it just doesn't. Never seen such a bland looking design. People though i do wish would stop saying things like oh we are jealous of Samsung or whatever. I am never jealous of a phone more jealous of a woman Never understood why people say that. All it is that i simply am not wowed by it. I wouldn't spend a large amount of money on it i would rather go on holiday

Phones4U in UK said 40% higher interest than GS3. I also read it does again use pentile display but not that it matters on a 5 inch 1080p screen

Here's my take on the S4.

Really nice, two things that stand out for me above everything else:

- 4.2.2 - Samsung are providing the latest out of the box. HTC and Sony haven't even got any firm plans for 4.2.2 yet. Hats of to Samsung for this.
- Size - big kudos to Samsung for keeping the same size. I had a fear it would be larger, but they've realised that this is probably the maximum they can go without starting to cannibalise the Note.

The camera, as with the S3 camera looks ace. Again, Samsung seem to be able to bring the best out of the Sony sensor.

Touchwiz updates look incremental, a few colour changes and the weather widget is now new. I would imagine this new Touchwiz Nature UX will come to the S3 shortly.

I'm not 100% convinced that current S3 owners will update. Compared to the S3 it does feel a little bit like a S3 plus. Yes it's faster, has a bigger battery, better camera and screen, but I don't think these are massive step forward from the S3.

Design wise is the disappointment, yes plastic is durable but I don't think Samsung can keep this design for the S5, they will have to move away from it. HTC One wins this round this year with design for me.

Another winner for Samsung at the end of the day.
