Just picked one of these up today..... not had a play yet, so will give some first impressions when I have. Switching on and the 4 inch super amoled screen is amazing. Tried it quickly in direct sunlight and is still completely readable.

Some quick unboxing shots........................

Congrats Man, nice pics

Posted by korbindallis
do social network flash 10 games play on it ?

Posted by masseur
I was impressed wth the amoled screen on the desire, but the super amoled, even in these pictures, looks pretty good!
I hope/assume HTC will use these in future devices
if you haven't seen it, here's a comparison in sunlight between the galaxy S, desire and X10. Despite my enthusiasm for the Desires screen, it is clearly outshone by the Galaxy S and even the X10 screen is pretty good!

Posted by Bonovox
Yes & Samsung have always made quality screens. I very nearly got one of these phones on Saturday but I plumped for the big X10 instead. Only thing though on a 5 meg camera why no flash That comparison seems to be showing the X10 & Samsung as the clearest the HTC Desire you can hardly see. My X10 is great in sunlight. Would love to see the Samsung screen.

The screen is fantastic, first thing I did try was to see how readable it was in direct sunlight and could see the screen perfectly well.
So far I am very impressed with the overall performance. I don't miss the flash as I don't really take many pictures in darkness. HD video looks pretty impressive, and picture quality looks pretty decent too. Will try get some picture samples up asap.

Great look forward to it

How is the battery life?

Posted by Bonovox
I think it has the same battery as the X10 a 1500mAh so should be good

Posted by JohnM
Yes, 1500mAh battery. Pretty good, lasting a day with a fair bit of hammer, mainly apps and web browsing. A few texts and calls as well. Should improve once it's been charged/discharged a few times.

Posted by Bonovox
Just seen a You Tube video regarding problems with this phones saying it's slow & has horrible delays between selecting things like apps & it does not cope well with many things running. Is this true how are you finding it?

Posted by JohnM
Not found it slow or delayed yet, and had it running several apps at once, maybe whoever put the videos on youtube are running silly amounts of apps etc... Finding it very responsive so far. Will try it with as many apps running as I can, see if that slows it down out of interest.

Posted by Bonovox
That's what I thought cos I seen another video review of it & it looks very fast although it was slightly speeded up. I love the pinch & zoom multi touch. The video i seen complaining of speed was some American woman

She's probably not using an app killer. Check out the video uploaded by Jon from Tehkseven (phonage), it has a comparrison of the Desire and the Galaxy S both running Quake 2. The Galaxy walks all over the Desire for frame rate
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5quGE0YbE8&feature=channel about 57 secs in.

Posted by Bonovox
Oh cool. I don't use an app killer on my X10 but though I have a smartphone I am not one to run ten things at once. The most I do is 2 things running at once so I never get slow down. Many app killers I have tried kept crashing my phone

Posted by JohnM
I use advanced app killer which I find does the job nicely.

gonna go and get my 16gb Galaxy S tomorrow for $560aud (325gbp)... sim free unit...

first Samsung id actually be willing to keep.... considering touchwizz can be turned off... And, im a fan of Android!

Posted by glorfingal
@bonovox .... +1 to the not running an app killer - tried it for several days on
my X10 as well and honestly couldn't tell the difference

super amoled on the X10 would be rather "special" !!

Posted by Bonovox
Ok guys i have today got one of these phones to replace yet another faulty x10. I have finally had it with Sony Ericsson and using this Samsung today all i can say is wow.

I am finding the phone great. Screen is ace even outside. Also despite it being glossy finger prints don't seem to stick as bad as some phones

Posted by mriley
Bono that is very impressive 3 phones in one month?

Posted by Tsepz_GP
LOL! Bono, how many phones have you had this year? Sorry to hear about your faulty X10, what was wrong with it? Loving mine still, i'm using an app called System Panel to manage running tasks works very well.
By the way congratulations on your Galaxy Ss John and Bono.

Posted by Bonovox
Oh mate the list goes on. All i ever have is faulty Sony Ericsson phones i am so fed up. This morning all my music vanished the phone slowed to a crawl nothing i did changed it. I did re install nothing changed and on top of this all camera a other pics were distorted i just do not know why. After the Mini problems i just give up. Never have many issues with Samsung and this is a beautiful phone. Love having pinch and zoom function on internet.

Music quality on this phone is outstanding I really am impressed I am using my hook Sennheiser headphones & it's fantastic sound & loud

Camera sample I took today. Not the most amazing camera quality but passable but video HD recording is very good albeit slightly jerky with mono sound. But I do love the phone just glad to break free from troublesome

I know it is very early days for you with the Galaxy S Bono, but have you found your handset to be slow with any delays between running several apps? Still finding mine is coping fine. Have had it slow up a bit when testing but had like 10 apps running, some pretty ram hungry ones at that. Coped well when I think what some phones I have had have been like with just 3 or 4 apps running at once.

Posted by Bonovox
No slowing at all with anything. With 1 gighz processor and 512 ram it runs great. Have not tried loads of apps but i never do anyway. I think any phone would slow with that many running. I think its fantastic mobile. I love all the eye candy in menus like the music player and stuff in landscape mode. Great audio too. No slowing in menus with lots of files. I am so far impressed but only thing not that happy with is no flash not such a big deal.

Posted by adnansanni
@Bonovox: Did you have X10 or X10 mini?

Posted by Bonovox
I have neither now but I did have both I am happy mate with this Samsung & very fed up with faulty phones. I have I am sorry to say had it with them now This Samsung is a breath of fresh air to & it's problem free out of the box whereas everything I buy from is problematic from day one. More I use this Samsung it feels very iphones-ish

I find Samsungs kick a lot of so-called musicphones right between the...speakers. Wave, omnia pro even...much better than x10 or ifPhone...
Enjoy

Yes they use some sort of Digital Sound Engine DNS which sounds great. I did have a Samsung Q2 mp3 player but I gave it to my niece

Found my first gripe... I have a gmail and o2 email accounts. Gmail works perfectly, no problem. O2 account works, and is set to check every 15 mins for new mail...... however, when the screen goes off, it won't pickup o2 emails. Even when screen is on when doing other things, it won't pickup mail at the intervals set. Have tried various pickup intervals but still no joy. Works if refreshed manually, and every now and then will pickup automatically, but very hit and miss. Need to now determine if this is down to the phone or o2's email servers.

Posted by Bonovox
I got no gripes yet but that could be O2 with that problem. The phone is on O2 as far as I know My email which is also G Mail works well.

Definately, the gmail is spot on. Will be looking into the o2 email, might sign up a couple of addresses with different providers and see what happens.

Posted by JohnM
This sort of answers my question, looks like an ongoing problem with android mail and pop email.....

http://androidforums.com/support/828-pop-email-problems.html

Posted by Bonovox
Oh blimey

Posted by JohnM
Tried removing and putting o2 email settings back in. Still not convinced it's working properly. Trouble is my o2 account is my main email, and it'll be a right bind to change over everything to my gmail. In fact, only really had the gmail account as it was easy to synch contacts. One thing I can say in favour of my Nokia X6, it handled email servers a breeze!

Posted by Bonovox
I am now using my G Mail app it's better but never used a networks own email except Orange which was shit as it was always down. I am wondering if we can download anymore of these live wallpapers they re lovely & I like the way they react when you touch the screen. I cannot put this phone down it's so gorgeous. Do you find it looks very iphone 3GS kind of design & menus?

Oh definately.... it's a 3gs rip off, but with a much bigger, better screen.... and well pretty much everything else! Just the email thing bugging me now. Set my o2 email to forward to my gmail, but hasn't done it. Think Android obviously has some issues with pop servers, and seems to prefer imap4. Yes, the live wallpapers look really cool, and a great being interactive.

Posted by Bonovox
I do wonder about the email servers & Android cos even my previous X10 G Mail sometimes I had to refresh my email as it would not always come through. Perhaps it will be sorted in time until then you may have to keep refreshing it. Not a Samsung problem then

Posted by JohnM
Doesn't look like a Samsung specific problem, as from what I've been reading, it seems to affect a variety of Android powered handsets. Just a little dissapointing such a high spec and expensive device can't pickup pop email. Will see if there is any work arounds...............

Posted by Bonovox
Good luck. I wonder if the display is scratch resistant?

About the Email thing. Did you turn Proxy on?

No I didn't. Does it help if it is on?

Posted by hihihans
It helped a friend of me (X10) Email did fine through wifi but nothing on 3G. After turning proxy on, it worked like a charm
Can you guys post some photo's you made in this thread? My wife is interested.

Posted by JohnM
Mine won't work properly over wifi either. Forward email to gmail at the moment.

I was going to ask the same question to you. Is it feel smooth like iPhone while touch the screen? Too much finger print? About the back site; is it easy to get scratch?

Posted by Bonovox
Finger prints don't seem to stick so easy to it and its not easily scratched if you be careful. And yes it is smooth operation. The pinch and zoom works fast smooth and flawlessly. Also pinch zoom function is used when viewing photos too and the gallery for photos and music player has lovely smooth animations that seem to float around the screen. The music player landscape mode has 3D look with rotating discs and there is no lag at all. Music player is perfection it sounds stunning.

Another couple of photos taken with it nothing special but they are not bad.

Posted by JohnM
Pretty good shots for not the best lighting (where's that sun gone, meant to be back today). You've done better than me, not taken anything interesting with my camera yet my bad!

Posted by Bonovox
You know what i never realised that it has tempered glass which makes it solid. I took a couple more this afternoon but am still out right now. I took one of a coloured disco ball in a music store. Should come out well.

Posted by JohnM
Look forward to them, yes, thought it had tempered glass. Looks like the Wave I bought for my wife today has a glass screen too. Really nicely built, will get some shots of it on here, will take them with my galaxy I think
