Here is the Nokia 5800 ‘TUBE’ many people are talking about, being the first device making use of the new S60 Touch UI. As you can see, it has been Vodafone branded.

It sports a large touch screen which can be used with a finger or stylus, and a 3.2 megapixel (Carl Zeiss Optics) camera with dual LED flash.

Viva la iPhone?

Posted by gola
No, better than the iPhone...

Posted by badassmam
Hope it works well as a smartphone, if so then it could be awesome. Any idea about accelerometer and stuff?

Posted by fbloise
I dunno, cause for compete against the iphone they should release something stylus-less
For me is the N800 revamped!

Posted by laurenke01
The fight (for me) is going to be between the Nokia touchscreen flagship (after the 5800) and the SE Paris. The fact I currently have an N95 makes the Nokia flagship edge out since I can load all my apps on it, but it'll be a bitter fight nonetheless. May the better phone win.

bottom right phone

and its all over the internet,

check out youtube for 5800 tube and the latest video shows the demo of UI, it is series 60 with full touch function, accelerometer, and so many absolutely cool features!!

No, but it really does look like one with those rounded edges... although at least twice as thick.

Don't quite see it myself. That still looks like nasty old S60 to me, whether it's touchable or not - no competition to the Iphone OS in look or feel.

Yes, true. And thats really what the iPhone genre is all about: Providing a beautiful, easy to use interface that allows everything to work really really well.

Hi all,

Remember this is going to be the first Touch UI product and isn't a premium product either but aimed at the masses. I also doubt the UI will be as pretty as the iPhone but i bet it's functionality will be in another league nothing that we are used to missing here.

Also as it will be backwards compatible with most if not all S60 apps you should be able to add any functionality you are used to on your current S60 device or need or want.

The iPhone UI was pretty but i just hated so much of how it worked. E-Mail sucked as it pushed all my mails including all my spam from my Yahoo account. To make that worse deleting Mail needed to be done twice, once form the Inbox and once from the rubbish bin. Making appointments was a nightmare with the spinning clocks to allocate the time and you can't preset a standard time either. The Web Browser that everyone raves about that won't and can't remember your page settings and what's worse is it won't even hold them for a whole session every page needs zooming to your preferred size.

Those where just the 3 things that bugged me the most and where a deal breaker for me which is why i sold it. A great looking UI isn't really the be all and end all of it. Ease of use and functionality rates much higher for me then just being the best looking UI.

But if the iPhone is great for you fair enough it just wasn't for me not even close.

I will wait and see what Nokia deliver with this and the following premium devices before i decide if a Touchscreen device is for me or not once again.

Marc

its the same S60 that billions of people all over the world love to use. so whatever nastiness you might see, is actually not there
and unlike iphone, this actually is a multimedia phone, not a half-assed one like iphone with its 2MP and video-less camera. not to mention the screen carries almost double the pixels, which nigthblade, i'm sure you love to count.

And yet, why has the iPhone become so popular? Because of the interface. That's what needs to be beaten in order for a phone to be declared an "iPhone killer". Jamming specs into a phone isn't the hard part.

You know, that's part of the reason why so many of my friends (mostly Nokia owners) are going for a SE as their next phone this year. It's because of the interface and SE's cool designs.

Well he can't complain about pixel density anymore! And unlike SE it's not on a sub 2inch screen either.

As for the iPhone, I see the Tube easily outselling it. Come on, who wouldn't want to have and try the NEW Nokia S60 touch?

I have an iPhone and iPhone 3G but I will definitely buy the 5800XM to run it through it's paces. I have a feeling I might be surprised by it.

What a silly thing to say. Firstly, you've no reason to say billions of people "love" that interface. They may certainly use it, but that's something else entirely. I use a Windows Mobile phone, I find the interface perfectly adequate, but do I and the millions of other WM users "love" it? Of course not.

Secondly, the "nastiness" of a UI is a subjective thing, which means that if I see nastiness there, then there's nastiness there. There really is no point in you telling me it's not.

and unlike iphone, this actually is a multimedia phone, not a half-assed one like iphone with its 2MP and video-less camera. not to mention the screen carries almost double the pixels, which nigthblade, i'm sure you love to count.

Yes, the Iphone is a famous failure where multimedia is concerned. Nokia will certainly have that market sewn up.

Argue all you want folks but bottom line is: S60 Touch is another very potent weapon in Nokia's already vast arsenal!

This mid-range 5800XM is that good, just imagine their flagship touch device. Bigger screen with N96 or beyond specs perhaps?! *drools*

Has anyone seen The Dark Knight yet? What looks like The Tube makes a cameo! It's a full touch screen Nokia phone, with a chrome accent around the edge like an iPhone. It's in a scene with Morgan Freeman and Christian Bale, about 25 mins into the movie. (Don't want to say anymore in case anyone's going to watch it!)

Nokia clearly have the product placement on this film, as every phone in Gotham is a Nokia lol. But the tube was a nice surprise. This is the only pic I can find online:

As always, you fail to see my point.

Posted by goldenface
Is this being compared to the iPhone?

Somehow, I don't see this as any type of iPhone competitor, it just hasn't got the style and that UI looks awful - hopefully it will be dressed up a bit before it is released but in the style-stakes - it doesn't stand a chance from these pictures.

It will probably undercut the iPhone price-wise (not hard to do ) and out-gun it spec-wise but it'll just be seen as the cheaper alternative IMO

point? did you even have any? i was talking about how this phone is better technically and god knows from where you brought into the popularity and how people love iphone for its UI. screw the UI, people who have any idea about phones will not jump to a phone for its UI. If that were true, nokia would be bankrupt by now

Posted by kreacher
^ Nokia UIs aren't that bad
But its hard to beat the iPhone just because its the iPhone. How many companies tried to create a better spec'd and lower priced portable media player to compete against the iPod and failed.
The problem is that the customers go into the shop and ask for iPhone or iPod, they don't ask to see phones or PMPs. The only decision for them is how much capacity they want.
iPhone has become a different product on its own, its really not a mobile phone with a touchscreen (which the Nokia 5800 is).

Yes, my eyes were wide open at that point lol. Especially as they put it next to my old friend, the 5100

Looks incredilble though! Smooth, sleek, very compact, and I just wish that was the real interface.

i double your opinion that the iPhone cannot be beaten by this device. afterall, Apple has only one single mobile phone model, hence they are focusing so much on its development/enhancement. in my opinion, they are using the same old winning formula which they used back when they introduced the iPod. iPod couldn't have been successful without the iTunes. look at their current Apps download service, look at the content and look at the statistics. they are focusing on mobile gaming, they are providing extensive collection of games. i will not be surprised if they introduce a gaming centric iPhone, with strategic alliances with major games developers. a winning formula is surely coming !!

sorry for the double post,

i was reading around about this phone and its new touch interface, this is what i found:

Nokia Tube 5800 - A closer look at iPhone killer

At the annual Evans Data Developer Relations Conference in Redwood City, California, Nokia executives at the CTIA show announced the arrival of a major touchscreen product by year’s end. Nokia, VP Tom Libretto, code-named the device “Tube.”

According to the rumors, the device is likely to be called Nokia Tube 5800 and would support Haptic technology. Haptic technology refers to technology which interfaces the user via the sense of touch by applying forces, vibrations and/or motions to the user, but it should not to be confused with touch or tactile sensors that measure the pressure or force exerted by the user to the interface.

Apple’s on-screen keyboard has a major drawback as it lacks “haptic response.” In other words, users cannot feel the keys as there is no pressure back on the finger when a virtual key is released. Haptic technology allows users to use a touchscreen and receive feedback like they are pressing on real buttons through vibration technology.

Nokia has licensed ‘haptics’ technology from Immersion Corporation that will enable it to incorporate a wide range of tactile feedback in it cellphones: for example specific vibrations associated with different ringtones and with different touch-screen-press commands.

The phone would run on Nokia’s Symbian S60 Operating System - the leading OS in the ’smart mobile device’ market. Statistics published in February 2008 by Canalys data showed that Symbian OS had a 65% share of the ’smart mobile device’ market, ahead of Microsoft on 12%, RIM on 11%, Apple on 7%, and Linux at 5%.

Apple and Nokia are very close competitors. Nokia’s announcement coincided with Apple’s plans to release the next version of a 3G iPhone that could allow Apple to gain more market share in the U.S. and Europe.

Dubbed as ‘iPhone killer,’ Nokia Tube is expected to include an auto-focus 3.2 megapixel camera with GPS, and a 3.2-inch LCD touchscreen display with 16 million colors.

The handset would be compatible with 3G HSDPA connectivity, and would include support for Java (which Apple has been reluctant to do with iPhone), Bluetooth, WiFi, GPRS, as well as DVB-H technology (mobile TV standard for Europe).

Nokia Tube 5800 would come with 140MB internal memory and would support external SD memory cards. Moreover, the phone would also have a TV-output socket for a widescreen view, 3.5mm headphone jack, and a direct upload feature for videos and images.

Users would be able to geo tag all images and videos, and the device is expected to include even more features as soon as the price and availability of the handset become officially confirmed.

Nokia’s phone sales grew by 34 percent in the Asia-Pacific region in 2007 compared with 27 percent in 2006, and China phone sales increased by 34 percent in 2007 compared with a 29 percent growth rate in 2006. However, growth in North American unit sales fell to 6 percent in 2007 from 13 percent in 2006.

Considering that Nokia is the world’s largest manufacturer of mobile telephones with global device market share reaching 40%, the iPhone is guaranteed to face some stiffer competition.
