I have a k850 and just got new 3g sim from o2 and i was wondering what has improved from 2g. Also i hear the internet connection suppose to be faster but i cant see a difference do i have to change some settings

You need to go to settings then scroll to mobile networks and select 3G and GSM. It may be already on 3G but if you are not noticing anything different you may not have 3G coverage where you live. By the signal meter there should be a small 3 if in 3G area.

The Second Life® experience is coming to
mobile. The 3D virtual world platform, created by Linden Lab®
will soon be available on 3G handsets via Vollee’s
streaming mobile games service. Beta trials for Vollee’s
new mobile offering for the Second Life Grid platform (an
inter-connected platform which extends beyond the mainland of Second
Life itself) will be open to those who pre-register by visiting www.vollee.com/secondlife.

3g on o2 phones esp. payg means nowt really, video calls & faster data, tho' on o2 this is often at reduced speed... more useful to laptops when used second to a wifi connection.

Hi all,

Well i must admit i find this thread quite confusing as either some of you are using the wrong phones or the wrong Networks. As since 2006 so well over 2 years i have been getting a much faster and better user experience when it comes to the Web and it has continued to improve.

The first real improvements in data speeds came with GSM HSCSD which gave us speeds up to 115kb/s.

Then GPRS @ up to 171kb/s followed by 3G/EDGE @ up to 384kb/s.

After which we get to what is commonly called 3.5G and HSDPA and now also HSUPA these new protocols currently give up 7.2mbps download speeds and up to 3.6mbps upload speeds. These speeds are comparable and in a lot of cases faster then many peoples Broadband connection at home.

Now obviously you need a phone that supports these protocols and a fast processor as well as a nice large screen to gain the maximum benefit. But on some of the right devices it makes using the Web whilst mobile a full and rich experience missing in nothing and fast and it's going to continue to get faster.

Marc

Does anybody know why you have to search networks to get a 3g signal?

If its there, why doesnt the phone automatically find it?

In some places I have the 3g icon on, with full signal, but in some places, like my room, its not there. I have to search and sometimes it goes away fast, which isnt enough time for me to click video call.

hi
imo the fone lock to the strongest signal that its can find, when its find gprs for the strongest signal so its will lock to it, 3G or HSDPA also, sorry for my english

Have you guys tried streaming a video from you tube on your phones? I find its vurtually unusable - I'm on o2 and have a C905.

The SE phones I've had so far lack the option of locking the signal to 3G only (my LG phone has this) so SE phones tend to bounce back & forth from 3G to GPRS/EDGE signals. The Search network option works for me so far.

Well i just moved from O2 to Orange. I can tell you the internet speed on Orange is so much faster than any network i used so far. Even normal 3G without HSDPA is fast. When i tried to use You Tube application on O2 it never worked. Now on Orange its great.

even HSDPA said 7.2Mbps, the practical maximum speed is 3.2Mbps

Got some experience with 3G and 3.5G
recently have a k800i with k850i
both with different cell operator in the area (country)
Foundings are
with the 'select network' feature in the settings, gotta do it several times at home so i might connect to the 3G (or 3.5G) network - whilst on the outdoor, didn't need to do that
plus i need to raise my hand (which holding the phone) as high as my chin
so sometime if i would use the k850i as a modem, i gotta hang it by the window or attach it (somehow) to a hanging lamp just don't try to imagine that hard
both network don't seem to work on a room with only one way out (one door) and wall surrounded (on 4 sided room)
on the efficiency, the 3G is much
much faster
much expensive
munch inefficient
the fact are, even though it's almost 1 minute long connecting through the operator's EDGE - and not 2 seconds on the 3G network of the same operator, to open a certain page that is, connecting through 3G would access 3-5 time of kBytes than the EDGE connection
(sorry for my english)
cause there is a price i have to pay for the kind of network here in my country
that's all folks

Well pages load in 1 second on Orange its very good. Though its slightly slower using Opera but still very good.

Speed isn't the issue, but the 'efficiency' that is

Btw,to what norobiik wrote earlier- LG phones could lock to UMTS/3G - i've found that some of Nokia handset might do just the same, locking to UMTS network
Then i heard that Nokia 6120c locking to UMTS wouldn't last a day life of battery -worst,taking 4 cycle of charge within 24 hours periode
@norobik
How long does the LG handset, locked to UMTS, would last it's power?
Any1 with any other data?please

Telstra Australia will be releasing 21 Mbps mobile broadband soon and will ramp it up to 42 Mbps within a year. That will be the worlds fastest mobile network and will enable delivery of leading edge services.

we dont have it yet in Orange Dominican Republic... Still waiting...

in our country, no matter what the speed is unless its free to access
