Memory Stick FAQ

Q: What does my phone support? How big cards can I use?

Memory Stick PRO Duo phones:

SE K750, 2GB tested, also tested with FAT32 partitions.
SE D750, -:-
SE W800, -:-
SE P910, 2GB tested.
SE V800, unknown (most likely atleast 2GB)
SE Z800, -:-

Memory Stick Duo phones:

SE S710
SE S700
SE P900
SE P800
SE Z1010

The highest limit on all non-PRO phones is 128MB (256MB with 128MBx2 cards). I haven't seen any Duo cards with 128MBx2 though.

Q: Does non-Duo cards work? or does Duo cards work in non-Duo devices?

No, non-Duo cards does NOT work in Duo devices. Duo cards are much smaller than non-Duo cards.

Duo cards does however work in non-Duo devices with an adaptor. These adaptors usually come with the cards.

Q: What brands will work? What about the different speeds? What's with the "Gaming" cards?

All brands out right now should work without any problems. Unless it is a pirate card of some sort. Sony, Sandisk and Lexar are ok.

The different speeds on the cards is if you have a card-reader. From what I heard the K750i does not use the extra speed at all, not through the usb-cable either. Not sure about the P-series phones but most likely it's the same.

Gaming cards have a higher reading speed, but a normal/lower write-speed. These are made for the PSP but works in all PRO Duo devices.

Q: What is the speed difference between non-PRO and PRO cards?

This is a bit hard to answer as they usually dont put up speeds on normal cards.

But the max speed on OLD non-PRO cards is 2.5MB/s for reading and 1.8MB/s for writing.

New non-PRO cards have a parallel interface like PRO cards and supports up to 20MB/s. This is only in PRO devices though.

AFAIK there is no speed difference between new non-PRO cards and normal PRO cards.

Q: Whats up with the limits, why 128MB or 2GB?

Sony made a big mistake when they made the first MS cards, as they could only hold up to 128MB. This is a limit on the cards, not on the filesystem.

This is why they made the 256MB Memory Select cards where there is actually two 128MB memories in one card. You switch between the memories with a switch on the card.

But 256MB is ofcourse not enough today, so they had to make something better. This is where the PRO cards come in, these cards have a limit on 32GB. That will take some time to reach though, if ever.

However, as you have to use the FAT32 filesystem to get over 2GB, not all MS PRO (Duo) devices supports cards over 2GB.

Q: Cluster sizes, what are they and what can I do with them?

A cluster is like a block, every file on the memory takes up atleast one block/cluster.

The default cluster size is 16KB, this means all files under 16KB actually takes 16KB on the memory. Even if it's under 1KB. Also, if the file is 17KB it will take 32KB.

Having larger clusters is more useful if you only have large files on the memory, this makes the memory faster.

However if you have many or mostly small files on the memory, formatting the card with a lower cluster size can increase your free space a lot.

To format your card with a different cluster size, go to Start and Run, type diskmgmt.msc (Only 2K/XP). Now right-click on your MS drive and choose Format.

Q: Why does Disk Management say that I have more space on the memory?

This is most likely a bug. One guy reported it showed over 3GB more space. Nothing is impossible though, but no one has been able to partition this space yet.

Read more about that here, http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=95361

Q: Why do I only have 468MB and not 512MB? (same problem with other sizes)

This is because the manufacturers calculate with 512,000,000 bytes.

Computers calculate 512MB as 536,870,912 bytes. There is also some space taken by the filesystem.

Q: What is MagicGate? How can I use it?

MagicGate is a copyright protection, aka DRM (Digital Rights Management).

Unfortunately, I dont know how MagicGate works or how to use it.

Q: Can you remove/change Memory Stick while the phone is on?

Yes.

Is there a way to salvage a memory stick when your phone detects it but it shows 'corrupt disk' ?

Can someone answer me this regarding mem stick pro STD vs HS

Will highspeed be faster for my k750? e.g if I copy a video onto the duo that came with the phone it doesn't playback well from it at all.

however if i then move that video onto the phone memory it is nice and quick.

I would like to know if a highspeed memory card will give me decent playback performance.

thanks in advance.

In the U.S. at least, Amazon has 1GB Sandisk cards for under $100, or 50 pounds. Pretty cheap, if you ask me. but let's not threadjack an eminently useful FAQ with pricing questions...
