P910 & BMW - found reason of phonebook failure |

I posted this on a BMW BBS, might aswell share it here
if any BT guru knows an answer...
for a colleague here at work who has a Motorola Razor V3 and a 330Ci, he was wondering if his phone was compatible with BMW BT (he may retrofit it)
So we went into my M3, paired his phone, and yep, it worked great. In/out calls work on the fly, phonebook transferred, but not SMS support (always says empty)
So I can confirm the Motorola V3 works basically fine unless you absolutely want SMS on your navscreen
but now comes the weird thing. When he initially paired the phone successfully, and after switching off & on the car to use the system, my P910 phonebook was displayed
After 10s or so, the Motorola phonebook replaced it, as expected.
My P910 BT was OFF for the tests, but so the BMW KEEPS TRACK OF THE P910 PHONEBOOK.
It just 'masks' the phonebook once the P910 repairs when switching on the car, so I think there is just something wrong with SE BT implementation: my theory:
P910 pairs & transfers phonebook OK to BMW
BMW now stored in its BT module memory the phonebook for P910
BMW BT system activated after restart, will associate the phonebook with P910
due to some bug in SE's P910 BT implementation, the BMW mistakenly thinks the stored phonebook does not belong to the P910 which is pairing to.
Thus it masks the phonebook
I'm sure this is just a very slight bug in the P910, but I'm sure SE will NOT fix it to promote their own carkits
I wonder if anyone knows what the BMW BT uses to 'recognize' a phone, since it has support upto 4 BT phones for 1 car, there must be something the phone is sending to identify itself to the BMW (the name? some IMEI number? some special BT pairing certificate/key) Maybe some little patch or symbian tool may help sending that to the BMW, but to have that programmed by a Symbian guy I first need to find out what is the 'missing link' in this story.
Anyway, whatever it is, the P910 does not send what the BMW needs... will get back in touch with SE to propose them to look back into this issue for many people's sake. Coz without a phonebook, calling from the car is a nightmare, but at least the incoming calls work most of the time, but not always (often 1 out of 3 times it loses BT connection when it rings and will reconnect when call is finished, go figure... it displays during the call in the top menu bar an ugly black struckthrough 'P', nowhere is explained what this icon means)
ps: Nokia 6310 had same phonebook ID'ing issue, but was fixed in a firmware update... SE still did NOT fix this despite being there since first P910 firmware

I spoke to a BMW NZ rep recently and from the info he gave me and the 5 Series I tested, I found the following:
The BMW stores phonebook information. The BT system displays the info for the last phone it was connected to (the P910) and when it can't find that, it selects the phone(s) it can find (the V3). I don't think that there is a S/E bug involved from what you described.
As you will see from the following threads, not all phones work with the BMW (or other manufacturers) BT systems.

problem is when even only 1 phone is stored in the BMW, the P910, it will still refuse to show the phonebook when the P910 reconnects. Since there is no other phonebook stored, why does it still say "PHONE BOOK EMPTY", while the phonebook is EFFECTIVELY stored in the BMW (as the RAZR Z3 pairing proved) ?
Calling & receiving works fine, and P910 is shown in title bar of phonemenu.
So it did find the phone, but for some reason it does not associate the phonebook originating from that phone with that very same phone when it reconnects !
Since T610/630/Z600 do work fine with same car, I assume the P910 does not provide the same info to the car when reconnecting, and seemingly the BMW (which is Visteon OEM BTkit) needs this for the phonebook.
So for me this is a bug in the P910 BT firmware, a small one but with disastrous consequences, since handsfree calling becomes a nightmare, requiring to enter the number manually with a knob, not really what you could call 'hands-free'! |

Hmmm... You may have a point there. But I presume that if there was a difference between the info supplied during pairing and that when reconnecting then it wouldn't only be the Beemer experiencing that issue but headsets, etc aswell. You haven't changed the BT device name have you? Or altered any other settings such as HIDE PHONE? Is the battery fully charged? I realise I'm clutching at straws here. I don't have any Pxxx experience but I've read that there may be BT profile issues to be overcome?

Well, I didn't change jack shit when pairing was done. I did afterwords (change name, some BT settings, etc) to see if it made a difference, but it didn't, always same empty phonebook
Maybe the P910 does not support handsfree kits where you can select directly from the kit a number out of the phonebook...? Or maybe it does not expect to be connected to a handsfree kit which can store upto 4 different phones in its memory, thus not sending some phone ID code when reconnecting to such a BT kit, thus the BT kit thinks it's not the right phone to display the stored phonebook?
I just don't know, I'm not familiar with SE BT headsets/HF kits.
The FIRST TIME after pairing, P910 phonebook will show up on BMW screen for about 10s, then it disappears as the BMW seems to 'hide' the phonebook thinking the P910 it just paired with is not the one the phonebook belongs to.
So identical behaviour like it would be a different phone reconnecting... it always sees the same P910 as a different phone!
I wonder if there could be programmed some BT hack that will transfer a phonebook to a handsfree kit, where you specify to which phone this phonebook belongs to! |
