Its a great idea!
The fact that we are there customers and can go else where for our services must be taken into consideration by o2!
There likly to lose business by preventing the use of this online update.

Let me just set things straight.
All K700i's sold by Carphone Warehouse are completely unbranded, as they have a license that enables them to sell unaltered phones. This is why some people on O2 have been able to use the service as they have (probably) bought their K700i from CPW, and it has the generic SE firmware installed on it.
Anyone (including me) that has bought the K700i from an O2 store or from their website will have O2 branding, which includes the O2 theme, the O2 startup and shutdown .gifs, and the O2 icon in the desktop menu. And it is these K700i's that have the Online Upgrade problem.
I tried ringing O2 customer services and couldn't find anyone that could help, I even got forwarded to the Data Services people that deal with SMS and GPRS settings etc., who obviously couldn't help. I've attempted to send them 3 emails now and I keep getting a delivery failure message.
Here's a template for the email I think we could all use:
To Whoever It May Concern,
I have been attempting to update the firmware of my K700i using the Sony Ericsson Online Update Service (http://www.sonyericsson.com/updateservice/K700/frameset.htm) and have even bought a DSS-25 desktop stand in order to do so. I have been unsuccessful so far, being told 'There is currently no service for devices belonging to your operator.', and 'Your operator does not approve the usage of this service for this device'. This is very inconvenient, as I would have to be without a phone for 24 hours if I take it to a Service Centre to be updated and would have to take some time off work to take it there and collect it.
It seems very strange to me that O2 K700i users would be able to have the firmware upgraded if it is sent to a Sony Ericsson Service Centre, so why is it not possible to do it in this way? Other owners of K700i's on from other operators do not have this problem.
I chose to get the K700i on O2 because I know that the phones are unblocked and because I thought that O2 could offer me a better mobile experience than other networks. In this case O2 have dissapointed me, and not lived up to my expectations. I may even consider cancelling my contract and moving to another operator, unless this problem can be resolved.
After encouraging several others to buy a K700i from O2, this situation has left me feeling quite embarassed as it has also inconvenienced them.
Also, after comparing my K700i on O2 to another K700i bought from Carphone Warehouse (also on O2), it has come to my attention that there are quite a few differences. My K700i has the O2 startup and shutdown screens which can't be changed as well as an O2 icon in the desktop menu, while the K700i bought from Carphone Warehouse has none of these things, and has all the features of an unbranded/SIM free mobile, including 'My Friends'. I feel almost as though I have payed for an incomplete product.
I look forward to seeing what you can do for me.
Yours sincerely,

Oh yeh, I'd appreciate it if anyone knows a direct email address for O2, as that obviously won't fit in the one you can access on their website. |

hi i'm totally with you on this and have sent an email to 02. i think the email address is mycarewebform@o2mail.co.uk but dont quote me on that! why should us 02 customers not have use to this service. i went out of my way and brought a DSS-20 and was happily going about updating my phone and then i get the message that my network doesnt support it. i was gutted! |

I've had emails from mycare@o2mail.co.uk which say this at the bottom:
Important: O2 endeavour to resolve your query on your initial contact and "Get It Right". If we have failed to attain the high standards we set for ourselves please reply to this email placing the words "Get It Right" in the subject field of your response and we will deal with your response as a matter of priority.

I can only add my similar story to this thread. I bought the DSS-25 in anticipation and was disappointed to find that I couldn't use the on-line service.
My reply from O2 was the standard 'sorry having you're having problems...please take to O2 store' letter.
The annoying thing for me is that I sent back an Orange K700i and switched contracts to O2 'cos I didnt like the Orange branding! Arrgghh!

The first problem with that is you still need someone to lend you their unbranded phone.
And secondly......we shoudn't need to do that! |

Agreed... it's especially annoying when all your friends have O2 branded phones

I got my phone on O2 from Phones4U, and it seems completely unbranded.
The customisation bit of the software info reads:
Customization
CDA102286/17 R2A
cxc125822 R2L001
EU_2
I've been able to use the online update with no problems. |

Just been on to o2 on the phone, they dont seem to know anything about the update service (she did say the technical manager wasn't there) and she suggested it was a matter i need to take up with Sony Ericsson because the o2 phones come straight from them and o2 don't do anything with them. She basicly didnt know anything about it and neither did her manager. She said she would look into it though. |
