I've just downloaded mpegable and have tried converting a short clip into a compressed mp4 file which works fine on my PC. But when this is uploaded onto the phone, it says 'cannot play video' I tried converting the same file as a 3gp video and that works fine on the PC and phone, although the audio quality of a 3gp file is atrocious.

Does anyone have any idea how I can get an mp4 file working on my k700 and possibly tell me where I'm going wrong? the profile I use is the video for P800/P900 one, which does the video at 76kb/s mp4 and 24kb/s aac audio.

Follow the instructions in this thread:
http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=61850&start=45

OR use Bengalboys method using PVAuthor and the 7650 profile:

Using these settings your 3GP file should sound ok.
