QuickTime Pro is probably the best.

Hi,
well quicktime pro is like 29 dollars..Any shareware versions available..! Although I don't support Piracy there must be some alternative..Why the heck did SE not provide such a software in the CD pack...

Can you convert dvix to mp4, au to mp4 or avi to mp4 with it?

Quality wise, quicktime mpeg-4 encoder is not the good choice.

From my tests of 3 mpeg-4 codecs:
- XviD
- PV Author
- Quicktime

XviD is the best, follow by PVAuthor the Quicktime.

See for yourself (the clip is the TV ad of Samsung printer perform by my fav korean actress)
XviD (2.21MB)
http://www.pocketpcthai.com/temp/Jeon_JiHyun.3gp

PVAuthor (2.16MB)
http://www.pocketpcthai.com/temp/Jeon_JiHyun_PV.3gp

Quicktime (2.35MB)
http://www.pocketpcthai.com/temp/Jeon_JiHyun_QT.3gp

Diferrence in filesize is due to slighly bitrate different in audio

Here is the comparison between XviD and PVAuthor (no need to compare Quicktime encode)

Note:
Details of XviD encode:
Video: XviD ~128kbps 2 passes VBR (framesize and framerate is 176x144 and 15fps for all clips)
Audio: Nero AAC-LC VBR~23kbps

Here is the same clip using mpegable
http://www.pocketpcthai.com/temp/Jeon_JiHyun_mpegable.3gp

All setting are optimized for best quality and in the same basis (or as close as possible) with XviD encode.

Frame by frame comparison:[top to bottom: XviD/PVAuthor/mpegable]

Note:
- mpegable encoder is not registered so there is a logo on the video
- mpegable seems better than PVAuthor but slightly inferior compare to XviD. But its encoder interface is one of the best I have seen (I really like it) and mpeagable also accept AVISynth frameserver input which is rare for commercial encoder.
If you interest in real percieved quality, download the video and compare yourself.

VirtualDubMod is my favorite encoder.

I use mp4box and Quicktime Pro to put xvid avi encoded with virtualdubmod and aac together in 3gp container.

Here are the whole process.
1. encode video in avi format using xvid (use simple profile don't use advanced simple profile) the resolution framrate and bitrate should not exceed the capability of target player. (176x144 15fps not more than 128kbps for K700) [xvid.avi]

2. encode audio, I recommend using quicktime aac mono audio at 32kbps or Nero AAC VBR at thier VBR lowest settings. [aac.mp4]

3.1 using mp4box to convert xvid avi (step 1) to mp4 using this commandline
mp4box -import xvid.avi xvid.mp4

3.2 then merge video with aac audio
mp4box -merge xvid.mp4 aac.mp4 movie.mp4

4. restream mp4 to 3gp format using Quicktime Pro (This step is optional)
- open movie.mp4 in quicktime
- choose export save as .3gp
- select passtrough for both video and audi (very important)

You will get .3gp file encode using the best mpeg4 video encode (and also on the audio part)

#StoneRoses

Tried your suggestions and compared to my encodings using X4live

I agree - this way gives optimum quality.

Somewhat more work than simply using X4live with its easy interface - but quality is definately better.
