here's an idea that could make a couple of people happy....why not allow the pic inside the phone (avatar) customizable with a flag?

Hardly, I think your being somewhat melodramatic. The Union Flag has its place just as the Saltire does and the Cross of St George and the other various flags.
Most people I know have little against the Union Jack being displayed.
